ADSA Vice-President s Message As Vice President for the Alberta Deaf Sports Association (ADSA), I am very excited to share with you all about ADSA s many accomplishments and updates during the past several months. We at ADSA want to tell you how proud we are as an organization for all that we have achieved with not only setting up the ADSA website, but sharing our news and information through the AAD Newsletter which recently got launched with Damian Karl as its editor. With those social networking sources available, we are able to share what has been going on with ADSA with our Deaf community since they all have been starving for knowledge. We are pleased that to announce that the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf is officially set for the 2013 Summer Deaflympic Games which will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria during the week of July 24th to August 4th, We, ADSA encourage all the athletes to commit to your training and as well, choose your coaches to support you to maintain and/or develop your abilities for the 2013 Summer Deaflympic Games. ADSA would like to extend congratulations to Kim Keba and Erin Wutzke from Edmonton, Alberta who played on the Canada Women s Volleyball team during the Pan Am Games, which were set in Brazil in July The team brought home to Canada a silver medal by beating Argentina in the volleyball semi-finals after they recovered with losing to Mexico for the gold medal match. Our Canada Women s Volleyball team has the opportunity to continue their competitive journey in the 2013 Deaflympics. From Alberta, Jon Kassian and Scot Whiteley were selected for the Canadian Men s Beach Volleyball team and they will play in Anayna, Turkey in September The results from the games will be announced in the next AAD Newsletter. ADSA wishes for both Canadian Teams to do well. During the 2012 World Deaf Athletes Championship that was held in Toronto, Robert McKinley Lafontaine from Alberta participated in the Track and Field events of 100 and 200 Meter Race and the Long Jump. Robert competed very well, due to his involvement with various Track and Field competitions. Unfortunately he did not win a medal in the 2012 World Deaf Athletes Championship Games, but he showed outstanding attitude with his efforts. Robert is only 15 years old and has great potential to continue developing his skills as a young athlete. He is an inspiration to ADSA and other Deaf athletes as well. Hopefully he will be accepted to compete in the 2013 Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria. Autumn is right around the corner. In my personal opinion, Autumn is the most beautiful out of the four seasons that we get every year. The season brings vibrant colors of orange, yellow and red and the crisp breeze during the fall days. So now, the summer is fading, which means an eventual stop to juicy BBQ d hamburgers, hotdogs or refreshing beers. The end to hot summer days calls for our athletes to participate in sports throughout the colder months to remain in good shape instead of waiting until the New Year to make those oh-socommon resolutions for getting back in shape. If you are planning on participating in the Deaflympics, World Competitions or Championships, please keep up with the Long Term Athletes Development (LTAD) goal. 2
Continue The other news that I would like to share with you all is that ADSA is nominating Mark Kusiak to run for the Canada Deaf Sports Association (CDSA) President to take on another term. His passion, commitment and contributions to CDSA and our Canadian athletes and ensuring that they achieve their goals are all very impressive. Mark also brought the Provincial Deaf Sports Organizations (PDSO), which are Deaf Sports Organizations/ Associations from each Province in Canada to work together. We, ADSA would like to wish him very well for the election. To close, I would like to remind you all about the upcoming ADSA election that will be held on November 17, You all have the opportunity to nominate new faces and even yourselves, to run for the new Board of Directors of ADSA. ADSA is always open to welcome fresh ideas into our organization. Calvin Novak Vice President of ADSA Press Release from CDSA Monday, September 10, 2012 Dear Members, It is with sadness and regret that we, the Canadian Deaf Sports Association s Board of Directors, inform you of the resignation of Kim Rizzi in her position as Executive Director of the Canadian Deaf Sports Association (CDSA). Her last official day at the office will be September 19, 2012, but will continue to help the CDSA board with the transition, until a new Executive Director is hired. Kim is a committed and dedicated individual, and all of us are very grateful for the hard work, professionalism, knowledge and passion she has contributed to CDSA and its members. The Board of Directors wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to Ms. Rizzi for her valuable contributions to CDSA during her six and half year term of office. The Board of Directors will be holding a quarterly board meeting in Montreal, Quebec this upcoming weekend and we will discuss next steps regarding the vacant position of Executive Director. Once the steps are determined, we will provide details at our next Annual General Meeting in October Regards, Mark Kusiak President Canadian Deaf Sports Association 3
McKinley s Experience at the World Deaf Athletic Championship Canada Athletes David McKay & McKinley Lafontaine My name is McKinley Lafontaine and I am a Deaf athlete from Alberta. I was invited to compete at the World Deaf Athletic Championships (WDAC) in Toronto this summer. Thanks to Alberta Deaf Sports Association, the Lions Club, many private donors, and my mom s help and support, I was able to go. It was an exciting and an experience of a lifetime in those 9 days! The first day was about meeting Tricia, our national head coach and the rest of Team Canada; David McKay (our pole vault gold medal winner) and Januse Czerwi nski. They made a big impression on me, as David shared his experiences and encouraged me to train and continue my dream and not worry if I don t win. Although this was my first pro track meet and I was the obvious underdog, Tricia had great coaching advice for me and wanted me to learn and enjoy the experience of a professional track and field meet. We attended the opening ceremonies where we enjoyed a lot of great acts and did an introduction walk of all the athletes participating. It was exciting to have everyone cheering for us and I even got to meet Kreesha Turner! I ran the 100 metres on day 2. I was excited and nervous. All the athletes were way older than me so I knew I had a big challenge. It was my first experience with the starter block lighting system and felt happy I didn t get a false start from reacting too quickly to the lights. I ran my hardest, gave it all I had and although I didn t place, I felt great competing and kept my positive attitude up. I ran the 200 metres on the day 3. I was worried about this race as one needs to keep their speed up much longer and most of the athletes were again much older and more experienced. I did not place but I did outrun a fellow athlete from Ukraine, which felt great and motivating. Finally, long jump. Tricia gave me lots of advice to improve my jump and on my third jump I jumped my personal best to date! I was thrilled to meet and get my picture taken with Sarah Lynn Wells, Olympic hurdler. I think besides competing, the experience that affected me most was meeting so many hearing impaired athletes. It felt great because I didn`t feel left out or different. Communication was easy which it`s not always with my hearing friends. I made some friends, networked some athletes and coaches and look forward to what the future may bring for me in track and field. I am committed to training for the next year, competing locally and hopefully accepting the invitation to represent Canada at the Deafylmpics in Sofia, Bulgaria next year! Thank you all! 100 Metres Long Jump 4
Two Albertans going to World Deaf Beach Volleyball Championship From September 15 th 23 rd, 2012 Jon Kassian, from Edmonton, and Scot Whiteley, from Calgary, will represent the Canada Team in the World Deaf Beach Volleyball Championship in Alanya, Turkey. Jon Kassian attends and plays indoor volleyball in Edmonton at King s University. He coaches both school and community teams and recently won the Coach s Leadership Award at King s. He will partner up with Cole Sanderson. Scot Whiteley is a Volleyball Canada official and has been involved in the sport for years. He will partner up with Richie Dyck. It will be Kassian s & Whiteley s first international Deaf event, first major beach volleyball tournament and first opportunity to put their new signing skills to good use! The updates will be on the Facebook; following Deaf Team Canada Beach Volleyball or the website: Jon Kassian & Scot Whiteley Canada Players Good Luck, Jon & Scot! Sports Safety Playing sports can be fun, but they can also be dangerous if you are not careful. Ø Ø Ø Ø Getting a physical to make sure you are healthy before you start playing your sport Wearing the right shoes, gear and equipment Drinking lots of water Warming up and stretching If you have already hurt yourself playing a sport, make sure you recover completely before you start up again. If possible, protect the injured part of your body with padding, a brace or special equipment. When you do start playing again, start slowly. 5
Canada Women Volleyball at Pan-American Games Erin Wutzke s Story I went to Sao Paulo, Brazil for 2 weeks to play for Team Canada Women's Deaf Volleyball at the Pan-Am Games. There are two Albertans on the team: Kim Keba, an experienced player, and myself, a rookie. We fought hard, especially in the semi-final game against Argentina, and won silver! It was the best volleyball game I have ever played in my life. In the end, though, we lost our gold medal game to Mexico. Nevertheless, I enjoyed meeting new people and learning how to communicate with #5 Erin Wutzle; #11 Kimberly Keba people who do not know ASL. As well, I liked learning a little bit about the Brazilian culture. Overall, it was an excellent experience for me, and I hope that Team Canada will meet again in Bulgaria next summer for Deaflympics 2013! Kimberly Keba s Story The Canada Deaf Women s Volleyball team went to Sao Paulo, Brazil to compete in Pan American game in order to quality for Deaflympics. As long time veteran Captain of Canada team, have been representing Canada team since I have seen the team grow into solid and consistency team throughout years. Especially with all players from across Canada and varied of experiences made it difficult to train together. Despite with lack of training together, we were able to accomplished silver medal and qualified for Deaflympic in Bulgaria 2013! My best game memory of this event was when we beat long time rival team, Argentina. We lost the gold medal to Mexico who has been solid team for many years. Thousands of thanks to Alberta Deaf Sports Association and Alberta School for the Deaf for their wonderful support for allow me to participate in Pan Am. I am proudly represented as Alberta player on Canada team. Looking forward to Bulgaria next summer in 2013 for Deaflympics. 6
