1 Solution Overview Cisco Desktop as a Service Solutions for Cloud Providers What You Will Learn The modern workplace is rapidly evolving, with user mobility more prevalent than ever and still increasing; the introduction of consumer products and bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives into the workforce; and the neverwaning priorities of productivity, data protection, and security. To address these needs and support the initiatives of the organization, IT is reconsidering end-user computing architectures and infrastructure. IT leaders need a strategy that lets the organization move from deskbound desktop work environments to a model in which applications, content, and data can be delivered at anytime, anywhere, and on any device. Many organizations are turning to desktop virtualization to meet their needs, but they are finding that the process is often more difficult and costly than expected. The motivations and benefits are unchanged, but the means to the end can be cumbersome and disruptive. This is where the cloud provider opportunity lies. Cloud providers can offer virtualized desktop as a service solutions and enable organizations to adopt these technologies quickly and cost effectively, while providing the benefits that motivated the transition in the first place. Cisco Desktop as a Service (DaaS) Solutions give cloud providers the infrastructure and expertise they need to take advantage of this emerging and growing market opportunity. Challenges of the Evolving Workplace Today s IT departments face a rapidly evolving workplace. The workforce is diverse and geographically dispersed, including knowledge and task workers, executives, partners, consultants, offshore contractors, and distributed call center operations connecting from locations around the world at all times. This workforce is also mobile, conducting business in traditional offices, conference rooms, customer and partner locations, home offices, on the road, in shared workplaces, and in the local coffee shop. The modern workforce wants to use a growing array of devices that is chosen based on personal preference, location, and activity: smartphones, tablets, ultrabooks, personal laptop computers, etc. This shift increases pressure on IT to provide secure network access and a positive user experience on both company-managed and employee-owned devices while helping ensure protection of corporate data. These challenges are compounded by the many combinations of user types, existing and emerging applications, diverse endpoint devices, and operating systems. IT Challenges in the Evolving Workplace The Desktop as a Service Opportunity To manage the needs of the organization and the diverse device and work style requirements of end users, many IT departments are evolving their end-user computing strategies. IT must consider security, data protection, mobility, desktop and application access, and user experience. IT must look beyond the traditional desktop - applications and data tethered to an operating system and hardware - and adopt a new virtualized workspace that provides users with appropriate access to all applications and data, liberated from the confines of any single physical device or location. Many organizations that need to provide a near-native user experience while tightly managing security and total cost of ownership (TCO) are considering or have already begun implementing virtual desktop and application delivery models. Desktop virtualization has been around for a while, but only recently have organizations begun to deploy it on a broad basis and across a variety of user profiles, and it is a rapidly growing market. Gartner forecasts that companies will deploy 59 million more virtual desktops worldwide between 2013 and 2016, 1 and in a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Cisco, 77 percent of global IT decision makers identified implementing or expanding application or desktop virtualization as a priority over the next 12 months. As interested and attracted to the benefits of desktop virtualization as many organizations are, many are finding the solution more difficult and costly to implement than expected. Significant new data center infrastructure may be required, especially servers and storage solutions, along with additional, expanded, or upgraded networking and end-user computing equipment. 3 The desire and need for organizations to move to new workspace models to support their users and to retain or gain competitive advantage, combined with the costs and complexities many of these organizations are finding as they move to these models, has created a tremendous opportunity for cloud providers to offer DaaS. This is a growing market that provides cloud providers with new services and revenue streams to bring to their customers. In fact, IDC believes the software revenue from the hosted workspace-as-a-service market will grow from US$30.9 million in 2011 to US$661.1 million in 2016, representing a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 84.6 percent. 2 Virtual Desktop Service Deployment Models There are three main deployment models for customers working with cloud providers for desktop virtualization (Table 1). The first model is hosted in the customer s own data center and is aimed at customers looking for help managing and administrating virtual desktops. This is the Managed, single-tenant model. Usually the customer for this model has a large number of seats and wants to maintain control while having outside help. In the Hosted single-tenant model, the cloud provider hosts the solution in its data center, but does so for a single customer. This model also usually involves a large number of users, and it allows the customer to offload the operations and administration of the customer s virtual desktop environment. Cisco has solutions for these two models as well as the third. The third Desktop as a Service model is a shared multitenant solution hosted in the cloud provider s data center. The entry point for customers can be a small number of users, and the model can scale to an almost unlimited number of users. These are as-a-service offerings, in which the customer pays a fee per user per month for a given level of performance and service, and the cloud provider provides all deployment, operations, and support for the users virtual desktops from their data centers. This model provides the customer with a combination of low costs, high flexibility, and low risk, while delivering the services and performance its users need, and it offers the cloud provider a flexible, scalable offering for the largest number of customers. 4 Cisco DaaS Solutions Cisco Desktop Virtualization Solutions are a set of architectures and validated designs that provide the security, scalability, and flexibility needed for desktop and application virtualization. Using this virtual approach, desktops and applications can be consistently delivered to both company-issued and user-owned devices in any location, providing an uncompromised and productive user experience. To deliver a solution that offers cloud providers new services, revenue streams, and competitive advantage addressing the desktop as a service markets, Cisco developed Cisco DaaS Solutions. Cisco DaaS is based on the Cisco Desktop Virtualization Solution using the Cisco Unified Data Center architecture. This platform is excellent for cloud providers, providing an infrastructure on which any service can be delivered (Figures 2 and 3). The modular architecture is highly scalable and adapts easily to the changing business needs of cloud providers. The Cisco architecture conforms to the Cisco Validated Design process for end-to-end system-level testing and documentation for delivery of high-quality solutions that bring together networking, computing, storage, and networking services in a secure, highly available, easy-to-manage, and cost-effective manner. Cisco Multitenant Design for Cisco DaaS Solution Cisco Unified Data Center architecture provides common infrastructure that cloud providers can use for a variety of hosted and cloud-based offerings. For example, Cisco DaaS uses the same infrastructure as the Cisco Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution, allowing cloud providers to expand offerings serving the virtual desktop computing needs of their customers using a solid, proven, and familiar infrastructure. This same infrastructure is well suited to any number of other offerings and is highly scalable as demand increases for DaaS solutions and other offerings. Delivering Desktop as a Service Capabilities: Benefits of Cisco DaaS Solutions Cisco DaaS Solutions are holistic solutions that allow cloud providers to deliver virtual desktop services anywhere and on any device for their customers. 6 Many customers expand their desktop virtualization initiatives year after year, giving cloud providers ongoing revenue streams and a customer base that is amenable to additional cloud provider offerings. According to IDC, Client virtualization offerings are also central to many upsell opportunities. There are many workloads that are moving to the cloud today but are heavily tied to a user's workspace, such as collaboration, , backup, VoIP, security, SaaS integration, and even mobile application management, to name just a few. The additional services tied to [workspace-as-a-service] offerings could potentially be as valuable as 5-6x every dollar earned for a virtual desktop or an application. 2 Cisco DaaS Solutions are flexible and scalable, allowing cloud providers to easily add capacity and services for individual customers as they grow and for additional customers as they are acquired. The solution combines data center, network, and security technologies from Cisco and desktop virtualization technologies from our ecosystem partners, Citrix and VMware.
