2 Current tasks geared towards promoting renewable energies Project implementation in Liaison with various donors. Implementation of Renewable energy systems for public facilities in off grid counties. Hybriding existing diesel power stations with solar and/or wind. Carry out research on renewable energy resources. Capacity building through training, participation in various renewable seminars and associated forum etc. 4 Example of recent Projects Installation of 667 secondary schools and health centres with solar PV systems Installation of 3073 Primary Schools in off grid counties with solar in readiness for the laptop project. Installation of 8 new diesel power stations with plans to hybrid them with Solar PV system. Hybriding of 4 Diesel Power Stations with solar in the off grid areas. Olosho-Oibor Village solar electrification project (200 Households, 3 primary schools, 6 churches, rescue centre, Chief s office and 24 street lights) in partnership with Akon Lighting Africa (Completed). Oloika Mini-grid by Southampton University (ongoing). Kitonyoni Mini-grid by Southampton University (Completed). 3no. Mini-grids in Kalokol, Dukana and Ngurunit being undertaken by Giz/Kfw (ongoing). 6no. Mini-grids along coast and lake victoria by world Bank (ongoing). 17 Challenges Projects are implemented in off grid areas which are insecure and lack infrastructures like roads. Off grid power stations consist of different contracts which are done by different contractors i.e EIA, Civil structures, Generators and Reticulation work which often delay project commissioning. 18 6

7 Conclusion The authority is doing its best in providing alternative energy source to areas that would not soon be able to access the main grid electricity and provide technical assistance to communities that would want to generate energy from available renewable energy sources.
