3 Japan Society for the Promotion of Science What is JSPS: It is Japan s core funding agency. It places high value on both researcher autonomy and research diversity. What does JSPS support: From basic to applied research conducted based on the free ideas of researchers. The entire spectrum of academic fields including the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Application Selection: Bottom-up approach; invite applications through open calls. Competitive funding; evaluate through peer review. Fair and transparent screening; select based on academic merit. International programs: Focus placed on mobilizing researchers. Aimed at establishing robust international cooperative networks. Travel expenses covered and international fellowships provided. 3
