3 What is SPA? Page 2 The Summer Performing Arts Company (SPA) is a Grand Forks Public Schools performing arts program for students currently enrolled in grades K-11. SPA is structured to give all students in the Greater Grand Forks Community an opportunity to participate in a positive learning environment in the arts. The impact of the Summer Performing Arts Company has been profound in this community. Since 1987, over 20,000 students have participated in SPA. Almost 15% of all students enrolled in the Grand Forks Public Schools participate in SPA programs throughout the year. Because of the size, SPA has become the assumed activity for drama and music students during the summer. SPA provides a number of performances for the community during the summer and throughout the year. Mission Statement The Mission of the SPA Program is: To provide high-quality Arts education for all SPA students. To provide a well-rounded Arts curriculum in instrumental music, vocal music, dance, drama, and visual arts. To promote good citizenship and educate students on being good stewards of the community. To create arts-based activities to meet the demand of all enrolled students, rather than limit opportunities and enrollment. To include every student that wishes to participate. To create a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment for students, educators, and staff. To promote and educate students on lifelong skills such as teamwork, cooperation, conflict resolution, tolerance, and good character. The SPA Program and its staff have been recognized for the following achievements: National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award Top 50 Finalist (May 2014) Grand Cities Children's Choir performs at Carnegie Hall (February 2014) ND-ACDA Choir Director of the Year (Brad Sherwood, 2013) Edson & Margaret Larson Foundation Leadership Award (2012) Grand Forks Public Schools Top 100 U.S. Communities for Music Education ( ) NEA Grant Recipient for "Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth" (2010) ND-ACDA Choir Director of the Year (Melanie Popejoy, 2010) GCCC selected by audition to perform at ND-ACDA Conference (2009, 2010) Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year (Angie Black Erickson, 2007) Nelson-Miller Award, SPA/GCCC Volunteers (2006) Kennedy Center Partners in Education Team Member ( ) Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year (Melanie Popejoy, 2004) Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Local and State (Dean Opp, 2003) North Dakota Governor s Award for the Arts w/gfps (2002) Awarded a Partnership in a Local Mentoring Grant (2000) Grammy Signature School (2000) North Dakota Governor s Award for the Arts (1999) KCNN/ Community Nat'l Bank Community Spirit Award, PBS Documentary Keep the Faith (1998) Mayor s Award for the Arts, KTHI Community Award Keep the Faith (1997) Mr. Holland s Opus Award (1997)

6 Preparing for SPA Auditions Page 5 WHEN: -Wednesday, May 11 at 4:00 pm -All production and tech team students will have a general meeting and then break into groups. WHO: -All students wishing to participate in a musical production must attend auditions. -The Tech Team will have a brief meeting with the Technical Director. -Students that are only taking classes, School of Rock, or vocal lessons do not need to attend. WHERE: Red River High School Choir Room; enter Red River through Door #1. WHAT TO BRING: 1. A list of all conflicts (include Summer School, Driver s Ed, Family Vacation, Medical Appointments, Sports Schedules, etc.). 2. Your registration form and payment, if you haven t pre-registered. 3. A musical audition piece NO LONGER than 32 bars (ask your music teacher if you have questions about this; also, an accompanist is provided). 4. You may fill out an audition form before you come to auditions (recommended). There is an audition form located in the back of this booklet. CALLBACKS: CONFLICTS: CASTING: The callback list will be posted the evening of May 11 on the 17th Ave. door of RRHS (door #11) and online at Callbacks will be Friday, May 13 from 4:00-6:00 in the Red River choir room. All students are invited to watch the callback process. If you have a conflict with the audition date, you must contact Allison in the SPA Office ( ) before April 30 to make alternate arrangements. Auditions are used as a means of selecting leads, as a learning experience, and to limit enrollment only if large numbers make that necessary. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM TEACHERS AND STAFF: We want everyone to have a great experience in SPA! Part of that experience is learning how to audition. In SPA, you are not auditioning to know if you are in or out of the program...you are in! Auditions are for figuring out who might fit into specific roles and for helping us get to know you! At SPA we promote taking your part and making the most of it. Your attitude, not the part you get, will make your summer a great experience. Remember, everybody in the room will be auditioning...and is probably nervous. There will be many students at the auditions. Some have done this quite a few times, but many are new to the program. When it is time to sing, you will hand the piano player your music. Mark on the music the 32 bars you are singing and be sure to tell the piano player if he/she needs to know anything else. You should go over to the piano player before you sing and make sure he/she knows how fast you are going to sing. Then go to the center of the performing area and get ready to start the song. Some students will act out their song like they are performing it in a musical on stage. This shows your acting and singing skills! Some students will just stand there and sing which is fine, but make sure to put emotion into your song. (Smile if it is a happy song, etc.) Don t mumble: think LOUD and CLEAR! Show enthusiasm and charisma! Also, make sure to breathe deeply before you sing and while you are singing. This will help your nerves and your phrasing. Make eye contact with the audience! Remember to look up! Make sure you have practiced your song in front of people. Parents, friends, and music teachers will give you great feedback! To keep auditions moving, you may not perform your whole song.
7 Information on Registration Costs Page 6 All SPA activities that receive high school credit have no fee to residents of Grand Forks, ND, or if your student attends a Grand Forks Public School. There is a mandatory fee of $50.00 for non-residents of Grand Forks, ND if the student does not attend a Grand Forks Public School. Additional services and activities do have fees associated with them (sweatshirts, voice lessons, mentoring activities, etc.). We do encourage all students to pay the Mentoring Activities fee. This allows students to participate in all of our after-spa activities including bowling, mixers, BBQs, etc. and it provides food for students at certain activities. If there is some reason that the student will not be able to participate after the program has started, you may receive a refund of any fees paid minus any items the student wishes to keep (sweatshirt, bag, etc.). To request a refund, please contact the SPA office to receive a refund request form. Grade/Credit Information High School SPA students may receive Fine Arts elective credit credits are given for every 30 hours of qualifying program activities. (60 hours is.50 credits, 120 hours is 1.0 credits, etc.) Credits will be listed on a transcript as Vocal Music (Chorus), Voice Classes, or Theatre Arts III classes. These are elective Fine Arts credits and should indicate the type of activity that the student participated in during the summer. This information will be forwarded to the participating students schools. Students that participate in SPA that attend schools outside the Grand Forks Public School District will have their grade and credit information sent to their school. It is up to the discretion and policies of their school district whether or not they can use the credits or credit hours earned in SPA. The Body Electric Following every main stage curtain call, the High School SPA Company performs a final musical number, "I Sing the Body Electric." This song has closed all SPA performances for the past 28 years. Once SPA begins, students will receive a schedule of dates on which the Body Electric will be performed as well as information about Body Electric Etiquette. Students are required to wear a current SPA sweatshirt when performing the Body Electric. If a sweatshirt is not purchased, we will provide sweatshirts so students can still participate. They must be returned at the end of each performance to the SPA office.
