8 OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CAMPS Dear parent of Outdoor Adventure Camp participant. Activities for most camps take place outdoors and off-site. Inclement weather or other unexpected circumstances may result in the postponement or revision of the activity. We will make every effort to stay with the itineraries while keeping campers, staff, facilities, and equipment safe. The information following should help to answer some questions about this summers camps. General Camp Information: For youth ages 6-17 Location: Off-site, different locations each day except Kayak camps and Sailing camps. All other Outdoor Camps will meet at Garfield Elementary 325 Plymouth Street NW Olympia, WA SE unless otherwise stated. We don t provide lunch or snacks. Campers need to bring lunch, plenty of fluids to drink, and snacks. A water bottle is recommended. Transportation is by City owned bus or rented vans (with our experienced drivers), Camp Staff: In order to provide the safest environment for your child, all staff are certified in First Aid and CPR. Our staff have extensive experience working with children in an educational and outdoor setting. Staff also attends several trainings to enhance the program and your child s experience. A Washington State Patrol background check is required prior to working for Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation. For Outdoor camps, the camper to staff ratio is 6:1. Illness If your child is sick, please do not send them to camp. Your child would be better served at home, because we don t have the staff or facilities to take care of sick children. If your child has a fever, active rash, nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, or stomach pain, they are not well enough to follow the day s outdoor activities. Because we are off-site, if symptoms of illness do arise, every effort will be made to keep him/her comfortable until we are able to call a parent or Guardian. If parent or Guardian cannot be reached, emergency contacts will be contacted. Medication Our staff is not permitted to administer prescription medication to children. They may only witness while a child medicates themselves and only with written authorization of the parent/guardian. If your child/(ren) takes medication regularly or for a temporary condition our staff must be provided with specific written instruction by the parent/guardian so that staff can witness self-medication. All medications must be given to the Trip Leader or another counselor, whereby, it will be secured and made available upon request by the participant and self-administered. Please DO NOT leave medication in the possession of your child. Injuries Our staff will treat all minor injuries, and parents will be notified at the time of pickup. If we feel that the child should receive professional medical treatment, we will attempt to notify you immediately. Emergency Procedures: In case of serious injury or illness, the following procedures will be followed: Call 911 Administer First Aid/CPR as appropriate Contact parent or emergency contact Contact Mike Baker, Recreation Program Specialist ( ) or Tad Earley, Recreation Supervisor ( ) File Accident/Incident report Check In/Check Out For the children s safety, a parent or guardian at arrival and departure must accompany all children. Each child is required to be signed in and out each day they attend camp. There will be a sign-in/sign-out notebook for each camp. Staff is only authorized to release children to those people listed on the Child Pick-up Release form. If you need to pick up your child early or someone else will be picking them up please let the camp staff know. People picking up the children will be requested to show identification if staff is not familiar with this person. Please do not be offended if this happens; this is for your child s safety.
9 Medical Information and Pick-up release forms You will receive this paperwork at the time your child is registered for camp. Please complete it and send to Olympia Parks and Recreation as soon as possible, so our staff will have time to review it before camp begins. Your child (ren) will not be able to stay at camp if this paperwork is not complete. Lunches and Snacks Campers need to bring hearty lunches each day. Also, include snacks and plenty of water in a water bottle. Swimming/extra clothes/sunscreen As a part of Outdoor Adventure Camps, most days we will have an opportunity to go swimming, therefore send swimwear with your camper each day. Also include a towel, plastic bag and change of clothes. Sunscreen should be sent with your child each day. What to Wear Each camp will have its own specific what to bring list. Each camper should have a change of clothes for each day and sturdy comfortable shoes. Camp Rules 1. Children must keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times. This means no hitting, biting, scratching, or throwing items. 2. Children must use words that respect themselves and others. Abusive or vulgar language and teasing will not be allowed. 3. Children must follow the counselor s instruction at all times. 4. Children must let their counselor know their whereabouts at all times. (This includes restrooms and drink breaks.) 5. Children will not be allowed to leave the camp activity area. 6. Camp staff will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. All clothing left at camp will be placed in the lost and found area and then taken to the clothing bank at the end of camp (or periodically depending on amount of clothing) if items are not claimed. 7. Children are asked not to bring toys, radios and headsets to camp. Discipline Discipline will be fair, reasonable, consistent, and related to the camper s behavior. An understanding of the individual camper s needs and stage of development will determine appropriate discipline. Discipline will be aimed at developing self-control, acceptable behavior and respect for others. On the first day of camp, campers will participate in listing camp rules. Consistent behavioral problems demonstrated by a camper will result in parent notification. Each participant is required to sign a code of conduct agreement before the start of camp. We retain the right to remove any camper from the day camp program when the agreement is broken, or behavior warrants such action. Our goal is to have camp be a positive, memorable and a FUN experience for you and your child/children!!
