2 Welcome to Montenegro and welcome to the capital of the first ecological state in the world - Podgorica! This is a self guided walking tour of the capital's most prominent monuments and routes. This free guidebook is offered to you by Montenegro Eco Adventures

3 1 Podgorica Tour Itinerary

4 1 Starting point of this tour is in front of the Clock Tower the only undamaged building during Second World War bombing of the city. Constructed in the late 17th century by Mehmed Pasha Osmanagic, trademark of the city is 16m high and used to be the highest building in Podgorica and there are few traditional songs that don't mention this memorable place. Clock is oriented towards old town and after national restaurant Pod Volat turn right to enter the narrow street.

5 2 Even though old town (Stara Varos) architecture is not as preserved as in some other Montenegrin old towns, Ottoman influence in Stara Varos is very obvious. Four centuries of Ottoman rule is demonstrated in narrow streets but among all in oriental sacral monuments mosques. There were six of them in Podgorica, but bombing survived only two. On first turning right you will see the Osmanagic Mosque constructed in 18th century by the same man who built Clock Tower. Even though the mosque was badly damaged during the bombing, the reconstruction done two decades ago brought the new life into this sacral monument. Memorial tomb of the builder is in front of the mosque.

6 3 After turning right by Osmanagica Mosque (though you won't be surprised if people call it Lukacevic Mosque, after the family who took care of it during many years) narrow street continues. You will see backyards and fences with people doing their daily routine. After some couple hundred meters on the crossroad you will see the oldest mosque in Stara Varos Old Doganj Mosque, constructed in the late 15th century.

7 4 After the mosque continue straight forward till the end of this long street and then first turn left, and on the next right, and start slowly going down by the stairs to Ribinca river confluence into Moraca river. Podgorica is actually one of the rare cities that lies on 5 different rivers Moraca, Zeta, Ribnica, Sitnica and Cijevna, so it shouldn't surprise you that it has so many bridges. The oldest of them is Sastavci bridge, believed to be from the Roman period, but reconstructed in the 18th century by Ottomans.

8 5 6 Cross the old bridge and continue right climb via stairs. Once you reach the boulevard you'll find yourself in front of the Parliament of Republic of Montenegro. Montenegro is civic, democratic, ecological state of social justice, with President who's head of the state. Parliament is the place where all important decisions are made. The walk further leads by the statue of the only Montengrin king, from the beginning of 20th century when Montenegro was independent monarchy King Nikola I Petrovic, man who brought international recognition and independence to Montenegro on Berlin Congress in 1878.

9 7 On the traffic lights turn left and enter the main promenade of Podgorica (closed for traffic every day after 17.00h). Ulica Slobode is the name of the street that will lead you to the main square of the city Square of Republic, with gorgeous fountain in the center.

10 8 9 After crossing the square turn left and you'll enter Bokeska street, epicenter of nightlife of Montenegrin capital with all important cafes, and clubs. What of the cafes is not in Bokeska it is in the one that crosses it Njegoseva street on the right. On the left side of Njegoseva street is paved part where is located Municipality of Podgorica, and the statue of Montengrin heroe Marko Miljanov and also the main library across it.
