We all should have some knowledge on popular major games such as Volleyball, Netball and Football as it will help us improve our playing and help us in making lead up games to spend the leisure effectively. Volleyball - National Game of Sri Lanka Game in Brief: Two teams play Each team has 6 players Court size is 18 m x 9 m Major Skills in Volleyball Service Receiving Setting Spiking Blocking Defending Spiking - an attacking skill Spiking - short/quick, medium, high Easy to get points by mastering spiking Blocking - points can be gained also by blocking Blocking - Single, pair, triple Defending - You should prepare to defend the ball from spiking of opponents * Dig pass - A pass used to receive, setting and directing the ball. Overhand Pass/Volley pass Overhand pass = lifting the ball by using fingers and wrist of player Other Joints involved - elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankle joints Overhand pass suitable to lift the ball for spiking Page 1

How to perform Overhand Pass? * When the ball comes to you, quickly go under the ball * Balance the body by placing feet at shoulder width and one foot a little in front * Bring the body low by bending knees * Trunk should be straight but leaned front a little * Hands adjusted above forehead * Thumbs and index fingers in the shape of a triangle * Focus the eyes on ball This picture shows some sequence related to the overhand pass. Stance = how you get ready when the ball comes (positioning under ball) Movement = Stretching the fingertips and wrist and the other joints involved so that the ball is lifted and passed Follow through = how your body relaxes after the passing. Body coming back to normal position and getting ready for next move. Activities to practice the overhand pass Keep the ball on fingertips Page 2

= press the ball down using fingertips 2 = Pick the ball off the ground using the correct position of fingertips 3 = Thrown the ball up and when it falls, reach it with overhand position 4 = Let partner throw the ball and catch it with overhand position 5 = Throw the ball up and push the ball up several times using overhand position 6 = Lift the ball up using overhand pass position when it bounces 7 = Stand on either side of net and pass the ball continuously between you and partner using overhand pass Page 3

Spiking Process of spiking has 4 steps 1. Approach 2. Takeoff and jump 3. Spike 4. Landing * For approach, the 3 steps skill is used. At the last step of approach, should bend and lower the body and get ready to takeoff. Types of Spiking 1. Quick attack 2. Medium attack 3. High attack One of these attacks are used suiting to the situation. Activities with the ball in different instances of volleyball 1 2 Page 4

= Take the ball with both hands and hit it to ground by arching your body 2 = Keep the ball in weak hand and spike with strong hand 3 = Throw the ball up and spike, while you are standing on ground 4 = Throw the ball up, jump up and spike 5 = Spike the ball which is held by and opponent on the other side of net 6 = Spike a tall that is lifted by one or your fellow player in your team Blocking = Stopping the ball coming to your court from the opposite team * Blocking is permitted only for the front line players Page 5

Blocking is done by jumping up and reaching with both hands over the top tape of net to stop the ball. Blocking used to stop a spike (blocking the spike is to best way to face it). This is an attacking method too (you can send the ball back to other's court) Fouls in blocking 1. Contact the ball which is on the opposite court or before spiking by them 2. Blocking by a rear or libero player (not in front line) 3. Blocking a service 4. Ball going out of court after blocking 5. Blocking from outside the flexible rod 6. Libero player attempting to block single or combined (Libero player is a player specializes in defensive skills and wears a different colour jersey than other team mates) Page 6

Servicing Rule of servicing = Player in the right hand corner of the court serves from the serving area to start the game. Fouls in Service 1. If the service order is not observed 2. Service before umpires signal 3. If the service is not done in the zone 4. If the ball goes out of the court Court Defence = Recovering or receiving any ball that is coming from the opposite court. * Also recovering a ball coming to you after contacting a fellow teammate or blocking is also court defence. Page 7

Technique in defending the ball is handling the ball. Handling the ball - 3 steps 1. Preparation 2. Contact 3. Follow through Preparation - getting ready to receive the ball while seeing the striker's hands Contact - How to hit the ball/receive the ball in hands Follow through - get up and get ready for the next move while seeing where the ball goes Rules in Court Defending 1. Cannot hit the ball twice in a set 2. Cannot block, attack or hit the ball at all above the net 3. Setter cannot hold the ball for an extended period of time Activities or lead-up games to practice 'ball handling' or court defending By working in pairs = One person sends the ball. Other player receives 2 = One kneels down and receives the ball sent by partner 3 = Sit on your heels and receive the ball sent by partner Page 8

4 = One sends the ball, other receives in correct position and pass to the sender. The sender then becomes receiver and pass again to the other player. Netball This is a game played by the girls/women Court size ft. x 50 ft. = 30 m 50 cm x 15 m 25 cm Skills of Netball Footwork Throwing and catching (passing Attacking Defending Shooting Methods of Throwing/Passing The 3 steps to follow in any of the passes is 1. Starting position (how to get ready) 2. Movement/action (how to do the pass) 3. Follow through (relax or get ready for next move after passing) Page 9

Single hand Passes in Netball Shoulder pass (ball goes straight) Lob Pass (ball goes in a curved path above the player) Under arm pass (ball passed at a lower level) Bounce pass (ball is bounced from waist level of sender to waist level of receiver) All the above passes are single handed passes Page 10

Double arm passes in Netball Chest pass (straight pass on chest level) Overhead pass (ball goes in a curved path over the head) Side pass (ball sent in a straight path by swinging the body) Bounce pass with both hands * you can see that bounce pass can be done using both hands or single hand (both methods) Page 11

* Why should the players obey the foot work rule always? If not, the ball will be given to the opponent team as a penalty and the chance to victory for your team will be lost. Attacking Passing the ball among your teammates to avoid opponent players taking the ball. Defending This is in two methods 1. Defends an opponent player 2. Defends the ball Defending opponent player Ball defending Shooting This can be done using one hand or both hands Page 12
