1 PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL Residential Recycling The A to Z of Residential Recycling This guide is designed to provide advice to residents on what items can be recycled in Palmerston North and where the facilities are for recycling. The guide will be updated on the Palmerston North City Council website as new services are introduced.

2 A to Z A Aerosol Cans Steel and Aluminium - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Aluminium Cans - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Some local schools fundraise by having an Aluminium Can Cage outside their school for drop offs. Aluminium foil - Not recyclable. If the foil cannot be re-used it should be disposed of with your usual rubbish collection. Aluminium metal ( Pots, old ladders, window frames etc) - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. Appliances - Old appliances in working order can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Whiteware not in working order can be dropped off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or to a local scrap dealer. B Arts Recycling Centre - Located to the rear of the Square Edge Building, the Arts Recycling Centre takes all kinds of items for reuse in art projects. For more information please phone Arts Recycling Centre on Barbeque Ash and Coals - Cold barbeque coals and ash can be added to a compost bin, your garden or worm farms. Bedding - If in good condition it can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition it must be disposed off as rubbish. Bicycles - The Green Bike Trust, , will take your bike for reuse or to use parts to remake new bikes. If your bikes are rusty and beyond repair they can be dropped off at your local scrap metal dealer. Birthday cards and Christmas cards - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Board Games - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition some of the cardboard and plastic items can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. To be recycled plastic items must be made of a single type of plastic and have the recycling triangle on it with a number in it. Palmerston North City Council The A to Z of Residential Recycling 2

3 Bottles and jars - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Bulk Collections of Waste and Recycling To discuss options for bulk collections of waste and recycling contact the Council on C Cardboard - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Cans - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Car Batteries - Can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or your local scrap metal dealer. Car Parts - Car parts can be taken to local automotive dismantlers or scrap metal dealers. Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) also collect some car parts for recycling. Cars (Unwanted) - Cars no longer in a saleable condition can be taken to local automotive dismantlers or scrap metal dealers. Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) also handle car bodies. Carpets - If in good condition unwanted carpet can be donated to charitable organisations or reused. If in poor condition carpet should be disposed of at your local transfer station. CDs - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition these should be disposed of as rubbish. Charity Shops - If you have an item that is still in good condition, usable and of good quality, there are many avenues to which it can be donated to be reused or sold on to raise money for charity or the hospice. Support of these groups is very rewarding and greatly appreciated. Some options include: Arts Recycling Centre Arohanui Hospice Red Cross Salvation Army Chemical waste - For disposal of household chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or old or dirty fuels please contact the councils Trade Waste Officer on DO NOT TIP DOWN DRAINS Clingfilm - Cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as rubbish. 4 Coins - Most charities have a scheme where you can donate unwanted foreign currency. Be sure to check online resources before giving away your coins as you may have something of value. Composting - Composting is an easy way to deal with your garden and food waste at home. For more information on how to compost at home go to: govt.nz/yourcouncil/councilactivities/goinggreener/ Computers - If in a good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Can be dropped off at Palmerston North PC Recycling at 204 Featherston Street (Ph ). There is a small fee for recycling. Corks - Natural corks can be used to make a notice board or, if sliced finely, can be used in a compost bin or worm farm. Plastic corks cannot be recycled Corrugated Iron - Drop off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ). Cosmetics - Cannot be recycled and should be disposed of as rubbish. D Crockery and Cutlery - Cannot be collected for recycling. If in good condition, used cutlery or crockery can be donated to charitable organisations. Deodorant Spray Cans - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Dirt / Clean Fill - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. Dishwashers - If in working order dishwashers can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Dishwashers not in working order can be dropped off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or to a local scrap dealer. Disposable Plates - These items cannot be recycled and should be disposed of with your rubbish. E Duvets and pillows - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition these must be disposed of as rubbish. Education - Recycling and Waste Water Treatment Plant Site Tours If you are interested in a tour of the Awapuni Recycling Centre or the Waste Water Treatment Plant contact the Council on for information on upcoming opportunities. 5 F Engine oil - Engine Oil must not be poured down drains or put in household bins. Used engine oil, volumes less than 4 litres, can be dropped off for recycling at the Awapuni Drop off Centre for a small fee. Fabrics - Old fabric can be recycled in the clothing bins around the city or the Arts Recycling Centre at the rear of the Square Edge Building (Ph ) Fat - Cooking fat should not be poured down the drain as it can cause blockages. Seal it in a container and put it out with your normal rubbish. Fireworks - Unused fireworks are considered explosives and must be disposed of carefully. For advice on disposal of fireworks please contact the Palmerston North Police Arms Officer on Fluorescent Light Bulbs - can be dropped off at The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). There is a small recycling charge. Food Waste - Residents are encouraged to compost food waste, food waste that cannot be composted should be placed in your rubbish. Fridges and Freezers - If in working order freezers can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Freezers not in working order can be dropped off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or to a local scrap dealer. G Furniture - If in good condition this can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in unusable condition these furniture should be disposed of at a transfer station. Gas Cylinders - Refillable gas bottles that are out of date, old or damaged can be returned to National Gas, 56 Bourke St, Palmerston North (Ph ) Garden Waste - Residents are encouraged to compost garden waste, alternatively it can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. Gift Wrap - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Glass - Glass that once contained food or beverages can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Glasses (Spectacles) - Drop off unwanted glasses in good condition at any optometrist. They are sent around the world for reuse in developing countries. Grass Cuttings - Grass cuttings can be used in compost or as mulch on gardens. Grass cuttings can be dropped at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Centre Compost Site for a small charge. Palmerston North City Council The A to Z of Residential Recycling 5

6 H I Green Waste - Green Waste can often be used in compost. Larger volumes of Green Waste should be taken to the Green Waste Collection area at your local transfer station. There is a small fee for disposing of Green Waste at transfer stations. Hair - Hair clippings can be used in compost, buried in the garden or used in a worm farm. For more information on building compost or worm farms please go to: Household rubbish - Items that cannot be recycled should be placed in Council Rubbish Bags and placed on the kerb for collection on your allocated day. Larger items should be taken to your local transfer station for disposal. Council rubbish bags can be purchased from both supermarkets and direct from the council. Wheelie bin and bulk waste services are offered from local waste companies, please look in yellow pages for your options. Inkjet cartridges - Warehouse Stationery on Rangitikei St have a drop off box where these can be left, or check with your printer manufacturer for other recycling options. Incandescent Lightbulbs - can be dropped off at The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). There is a small recycling charge. J Iron - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. Jars - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Crate. Joinery - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. K L Junk Mail - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Keyboards - If in a good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Alternatively these can be dropped off at Palmerston North PC Recycling at 204 Featherston Street (Ph ). There is a small fee for recycling. Kitchen Paper Towels - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Lead Acid Battery - Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or your local car wreckers yard. They will buy these off you. 7 M Light bulbs - All lightbulbs, including eco-bulbs and fluorescents can be dropped off at The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). There is a small recycling charge. Magazines - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Mattresses - If in a good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If they are not reusable then they are waste and can be delivered to a transfer station for a small fee. Medicine - All unused medicines can be returned to any pharmacy. It is important that medicines are in the original container with the label stating what the medicine is. Metal - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. Milk Bottles - Plastic milk bottles can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin. Mirrors - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition or broken mirrors cannot be recycled. Mobile Phones - Can be returned to any phone retailer. Money - Most charities have a scheme where you can donate unwanted foreign currency. Be sure to check online resources before giving away your coins as you may have something of value. Monitors - If in a good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Alternatively these can be dropped off at Palmerston North PC Recycling at 204 Featherston Street (Ph ). There is a small fee for recycling. N O Musical instruments - If in good condition these items can be donated to a school, community group or charity. If in poor condition these items must be disposed of as rubbish. Needles/syringes - Can be returned to any Mid-Central Health Pharmacy Newspapers - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Office furniture - Can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Furniture that is in saleable condition can be sold on behalf of by The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). Palmerston North City Council The A to Z of Residential Recycling 7

8 Oil - Motor Oil must not be poured down drains or put in household bins. Used engine oil, volumes less than 4 litres, can be dropped off for recycling at the Awapuni Drop off Centre for a small fee. P Ovens - If in working order ovens can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Ovens not in working order can be dropped off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or to a local scrap dealer. Paint - House or interior paint can be dropped off to The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ) where it is sent away to Enviropaints to be cleaned, and reused. Oil based and water based paints can be dropped off at Resenes or Placemakers. There may be a small charge. Remnants of paint used for art can be dropped off at the Arts Recycling Centre at the rear of the Square Edge Building (Ph ) Paper - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Pellets / Wood Packaging - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. Phone Books - Can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin Plastic (Bottles Only) - Numbers 1 7 can be placed in your Kerbside Recycling Bin or delivered to the drop off sites at Awapuni or Ferguson Street. They must be clean and have the lids removed. Pesticides - The Trade Waste Officer can collect residential amounts. We prefer to pick up these in sealed containers. Please contact the Council on for advice on dealing with residential pesticides. Plastic bags - Cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as rubbish. Plastics - Any plastic that is clean and has the recycling triangle symbol with a number in it, moulded into the plastic is recyclable and can be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. Plastic items that do not have the recycling symbol must be disposed of as rubbish. Polystyrene packaging - Cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as rubbish. Pool Chemicals - For pick up of old or unused pool chemicals please call the Trade Waste Officer at the council on Pots and Pans - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If they are in poor condition and are metal, they may be able to be recycled at your local metal recycler Palmerston North City Council The A to Z of Residential Recycling 8

9 Printer Cartridges - Warehouse Stationery on Rangitikei St have a drop off box where these can be left, or check with your printer manufacturer for other recycling options. QR Pyrex Glass - Cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as rubbish. Rechargeable Batteries - once rechargeable batteries have reached the end of their life they can be dropped off to The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). Recycle - There are an increasing number of avenues available for recycling items that you no longer have a use for. The Council has a kerbside collection service which allows you to recycle your clean household plastics, aluminium, glass, tins, paper and cardboard with ease. The Council also provides a commercial wheelie bin recycling collection service to businesses for a small charge. In many cases you will find it cheaper to recycle than to send these items to landfill. For more information on any of the council services please contact the call centre on Re-Use - A lot of unwanted household items can be re-used. If you do not want it anymore and it is in good condition, consider selling it, gifting it to friends or family or donating it to charity. Roofing Iron - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. S Rubbish - Items that cannot be recycled should be placed in Council Rubbish Bags and placed on the kerb for collection on your allocated day. Larger items should be taken to your local transfer station for disposal. Council rubbish bags can be purchased from both supermarkets and direct from the council. Shoes that are completely worn or broken should be disposed off as rubbish. Shopping Bags - Can be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. Soil - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. 10 Solvents - For small residential amounts you can contact the Councils Trade Waste Officer for advice on Spectacles - Drop off unwanted glasses in good condition at any optometrist. They are sent around the world for reuse in developing countries. Sports Equipment - Sports equipment that is still in good condition could be donated to local school or sports groups. Sports equipment that is no longer usable should be disposed of as rubbish T Syringes - Can be returned to any Mid-Central Health Pharmacy Takeaway food containers - If they are plastic and have the recycling triangle symbol with a number 1 7 in it then these can be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. Check to see if the packaging is bio-degradable as some takeway containers can now be used in compost. If the container is not a plastic number 1 7 or used in compost, it must be disposed of as rubbish. Televisions - If in good working order these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If not in working order these can be dropped off at The Green Hub on Rangitikei Street (Ph ). Textiles - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition these can be used as cleaning rags or should be disposed of as rubbish. Timber and Wood - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. Tin - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. Toner Cartridges - Can be dropped off at Warehouse Stationery on Rangitikei Street. Tools - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If in poor condition these should be disposed of as rubbish. Top Soil - This should not be treated as waste, contact Higgins Aggregates on to discuss your options. Toys - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If toys are made of a single type of plastic and have the recycling triangle on it with a number in it, then they can be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. 11 If they do not contain the recycling triangle and are not in re-usable condition they should be disposed of as rubbish. Trailers - Old trailers that are no longer operational can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or taken to a local scrap metal dealer. Trees and Stumps - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. U V Tyres - There is currently no recycling option available in Palmerston North. The Council is continuing to investigate options to establish a recycling service for tyres. Underlay - Carpet underlay makes fantastic weed matting. If it cannot be reused then it will need to be delivered to a transfer station for disposal Vegetable Peelings - Residents are encouraged to compost vegetable peelings, anything that cannot be composted should be placed in your rubbish Vehicle Batteries - can be dropped off at Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ), Strongs currently pay cash incentives to take your vehicle battery. W Videos and DVDs - If in good condition these can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. If not in good condition these are not recyclable and must be disposed of as rubbish. Washing Powder Boxes - Can be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. Waste - Waste is anything that can t be recycled, composted or re-used. Household waste can be disposed of in the kerbside rubbish collection when placed in approved Council rubbish bags. Some local businesses also provide a kerbside rubbish collection service using wheelie bins. For larger volumes of rubbish, please contact your local waste contractor. Rubbish can also be dropped off at your local transfer station for a small fee. Whiteware - Whiteware in working order can be reused or donated to charitable organisations. Whiteware not in working order can be dropped off to Strongs Metal Recyclers at the Awapuni Sustainable Development Site (Ph ) or to a local scrap dealer. Windows - The glass in windows is not recyclable and must be disposed of as rubbish. 12 Wooden Pellets/Wood Packaging - Can be dropped off at Cairns Bins located at 12 Matthews Ave (0800 CAIRNS BINS). There is a fee associated with this service. Wool - Can be donated to the Arts Recycling Centre at the rear of the Square Edge Building (Ph ). Worm Farms - are a fantastic way to reduce your organic waste at home and also generate an amazing fertiliser for your garden.
