With 3.6 million people, the region is the most densely populated area in Scandinavia. Malmö, Sweden s third largest city, with 300,000 inhabitants, is located in the centre of the Öresund Region. Malmö and Lund, by train only 15 minutes apart, are a breeding ground for strong corporate activity, university research and innovative technologies in our key sectors: cleantech, digital media, life sciences, logistics and tourism. Skåne is now ranked the second most attractive region in Sweden for foreign companies. The Cleantech sector in Southern Sweden is dynamic. With a highly competent and supportive infrastructure of education and industrial knowhow, Skåne provides one of the most attractive business environments in the world for Cleantech. 3 Picture: White Arkitekter Lund the city of ideas Lund is a city characterized by its rich cultural and historical heritage, state-of-the-art scientific research and development, bustling business climate and investments opportunities. As a result we have seen a vast number of inventions over the years, the turbohaler, the dialyser, the mobile phone, the use of ultrasound in medicine, the tetra-pak carton, the ink-jet printer, the first machine for artificial respiration: the barospirator, the fingerprint reader, and many others. Some of the internationally well-known companies are Tetra Pak, Alfa Laval, Sony, Ericsson, Mitsubishi, Intel and Gambro. This thousand-year-old centre of learning boasts a highly favorable business climate. Over the years, a great number of knowledgebased companies have developed with the help of Scandinavia s largest university and the Ideon Science Park. Lund s work with sustainable transportation has also sparked a good deal of international interest. Environmentally adapted transport systems in Lund (LundaMaTs) is a working strategy aiming at LundaMaTs has become a well-known brand for Swedish city and traffic planners over the years. MAX IV Laboratory MAX IV is planned to be the next generation Swedish synchrotron radiation facility. This solution allows the production of synchrotron radiation with optimal characteristics in a wide energy region, fulfilling the needs of most diverse research areas. MAX IV Laboratory has operated successfully for more than 25 years and is currently building the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world come to the MAX IV Laboratory every year to use the x-rays produced by our electron accelerators, doing research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. MAX IV, the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in research infrastructure, will be the brightest source of x-rays worldwide when inaugurated in ESS The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a multidisciplinary research centre based on the world s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be 30 times brighter than today s leading facilities, enabling new opportunities for researchers in the fields of life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics.

4 Picture Uulas Arkitekter AB Ideon Science Park - The leading science park in Scandinavia Ideon is the ideal environment for companies wanting to grow their business. A place where people can improve and develop their own ideas as well as others. A place where anything is possible. At present, Ideon has 120,000 square metres of office space and about 350 companies operate here, employing more than 2,700 people. Ideon is run by Wihlborgs Fastigheter AB, Lund University and Lund Municipality. As Scandinavia s leading site for open innovation, Ideon has a 30-year history with many of our country s leading innovative companies having started here. Green Building - Ideon Gateway Environmental thinking played a great role in the creation of Ideon Gateway. There are many intriguing solutions in the building; house retrieves heat and cold from the ground, a large proportion of electricity comes from solar panels integrated into the building façade and there is a large element of LED lighting, including all general lighting beeing LEDs. The photovoltaic system in Ideon Gateway is the largest system installed in a building in Sweden. The Delegation for Sustainable Cities has selected Ideon Gateway as an example for promoting sustainable urban development. Photo E.ON

5 The City of Malmö Malmö is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and an international city. This is expressed, not least, by the fact that Malmö has residents from approximately 170 different nationalities. Malmö is also undergoing a transition from being an industrial city to a city of knowledge. Older industries have been replaced by investments in new technology and training programmes of high calibre. Over the last years the City of Malmö has received many international awards for its focus on sustainable city development and pilot projects such as Augustenborg and the Western Harbour. In current efforts, as well as long-term planning, an underlying ambition of Malmö s master plan is to create a sustainable and attractive city particularly related to the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and ecological sustainability. Skåne contains some of the most fertile land in Europe, and it is an important agricultural region, with a defining character in terms of its cultural heritage. As Malmö expands, it attempts to balance growth with preservation of open areas for nature recreation and food cultivation. The city aims to densify existing city areas with many new building sites located within the central vicinity or on former industrial sites in order to avoid over-exploitation of surrounding arable lands. Malmö s Western Harbour has become the city s most well known district in terms of integrating environment and energy in urban planning. And while the Western Harbour is famous for its large-scale demonstration project, it also demonstrates that sustainable construction does not have to be expensive with environment, energy and quality in focus. Turning Torso The skyscraper was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and officially opened in August The tower reaches a height of 190 metres, with 54 floors. Turning Torso is an amazing combination of sculpture and construction. It is also one of the few landmarks in the world which has become part of everyday life with its ten floors of offices, 147 apartments and meeting facilities on the two top floors. In order to follow the twist of the building, the windows are leaning either inwards or outwards, depending on which side of the building they are on. Turning Torso is a building which facilitates an environmentally adapted way of life. HSB Malmö required all involved entrepreneurs to work in an environmental friendly way. Within the project Detoxifying the Construction Business, in which HSB Malmö takes part, a list of 10 hazardous materials to be phased out has been put together. The process of phasing out these materials is longterm, but in HSB Turning Torso great progress has been made. The building is supplied with 100 percent locally produced renewable energy. By monitoring heat and water consumption in each apartment residents can plan their own energy costs and thereby their impact on the environment. 6 Photo: Rosa Cuzlowska Energy Smart buildings - E.ON Sustainability The E.ON Sustainability building is built in the Western Harbour in Malmö and is one of a kind. The building contains Sweden s most advanced systems to measure and control energy use, each apartment is equipped with approximately 100 data points which constantly provides information about temperature and power consumption. The purpose of the building is to develop and evaluate solutions that can be used in both existing houses and in new construction. And without sacrificing either comfort or design. The tenants of the house plays a major role and are also part of the solution. With a tablet or smartphone, residents can see and control their energy consumption, even if they are not at home. The system can also automatically control consumption to periods when the price is low. The goal is that the lessons learned from studying the residents energy use and their experience of sustainable living are transferable to any home in the future. Eight duplex apartments from 112 to 130 square meters. Shared pool and sauna. Electric bicycle is included in the rent. Each apartment has an orangery. A gardener with an own key takes care of them, sometimes with the help of solar energy from the roof. E.ON is subsidizing the rent by 30 percent for three years. Residenset - Home of the Governor Residenset (or the Residence) originates from the 1500 s. Residenset originally consisted of two buildings and its current layout originates from the rebuilding that commenced in Many kings have visited Residenset during the years. Most famous is the three king meeting in The Swedish King, Gustav V, had invited the Kings of Denmark and Norway in order to expand the cooperation between the countries during World War I. The main purpose was to consolidate the Scandinavian neutrality during the war. In Residenset one can find old paintings for example one made by King Karl the XV (who reigned 1859 until 1872 and actually died at Residenset). Governors have resided at Residenset since Skåne came to belong to Sweden in 1658.
