If this might apply to your research idea, please innovation@breastcancercampaign.org with a brief description and they will get back to you. Have you visited our Funding Opportunities Database? researchprofessional.com Programme grants for applied research This is a national response mode programme that aims to provide evidence to improve health outcomes in England through promotion of health, prevention of ill health, and optimal disease management, with particular emphasis on conditions causing significant disease burden. Applications of applied health research, including health services research; public health research; behavioural research; economic evaluations; and modelling are invited, delivering research findings that will have practical application for the benefit of patients, typically through improved health care or better health care delivery, within three to five years of a programme s end. Individual programmes over a period of three to five years funded through a programme grant typically consist of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multidisciplinary approaches, including clinical, health economics, statistics, qualitative and behavioural sciences, to ensure that research objectives can be met. The scheme is directed towards leading researchers who can demonstrate an impressive track-record of achievement in applied health research. Individual awards are for a maximum of 2 million using Full Economic Costing. Funding awarded is determined by the scale and nature of the research activity to be conducted. Deadlines: 6 October 2015 and anticipated to be March Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme The RfPB programme is a national responsemode programme for high quality investigatorled research projects that address issues of importance to the NHS. It funds research into everyday practice in the health service. All proposals must show evidence from systematic reviews to ensure patient safety and value for money. Funds are available on a population basis. Applications are assessed and processed by Regional Committees which cover each of the ten Government Office regions. All researchers in England are eligible to apply. Joint applications from NHS researchers with academic partners are welcome, although funding will normally be awarded to the NHS partner. It funds regionally-derived applied research projects in health services and social care. Its main purpose is to realise, through evidence, the huge potential for improving, expanding and strengthening the way that healthcare is delivered for patients, the public and the NHS. RfPB welcomes proposals that have benefited from interaction with patients and the public, which relate to patient and service user experience and/or have been drawn up in association with a relevant group of service users. Awards are for up to 350,000 and the scheme does use Full Economic Costing. Deadline: 20 May 2015 and anticipated to be January
5 National Institute for Health Research... continued The Wellcome Trust wellcome.ac.uk Health Technology Assessment Programme (HTA) The HTA Programme commissions research in three different ways: through the commissioned funding stream which advertises calls for research proposals that address specific topics, by advertising special calls for research proposals that address themed areas, and by funding HTA clinical evaluation and trials studies that are proposed directly by researchers. Commissioned calls for research are advertised four times a year and themed calls for proposals are advertised when a particular need has been identified. HTA clinical evaluation and trials studies The NIHR HTA Programme funds research to assess the effectiveness of technologies within the NHS. In this researcher-led work stream, grants are available for primary research and evidence synthesis on topics proposed by the researchers. Applicants complete an outline application form, if the outline is successful a full application form will be invited. Health technology covers any method used to promote health, prevent and treat disease and improve rehabilitation or long-term care. Technologies in this context are not confined to new drugs or equipment, but include procedures, devices, tests, settings of care, screening programmes and any intervention used in the treatment, prevention or diagnosis of disease. They should be currently used in the NHS, or likely to be used if supported by the results of the research. Technologies being evaluated should have had some assessment of efficacy already. There are no fixed limits on the duration of projects or funding, and proposals should be tailored to fully address the problem. However, applicants should balance the pressing need within the NHS for the information with the need to follow up participants for long enough to measure important outcomes. This scheme uses Full Economic Costing. Proposals can be submitted on an ongoing basis. Those not received by the stated deadline will be considered in the next available assessment cycle. Deadline: January and May The Wellcome Trust provide support for biological, clinical and translational research, public engagement activities and exploration of the historical, cultural and ethical issues. The Wellcome Trust is always happy to discuss an application. Small arts awards Projects must involve the creation of new artistic work and have biomedical scientific input into the process, either through a scientist taking on an advisory role or through direct collaboration. This expert may be from an ethics, science or history background, but must be an expert in the area of biomedical science that is being investigated. Funding can support the development of new project ideas, deliver small productions or workshops, investigate and experiment with new methods of engagement through the arts, or develop new collaborative relationships between artists and scientists. Funds available up to 40,000 and the scheme does not use Full Economic Costing. Deadline: 7 August Investigator awards The Trust has combined its New and Senior Investigator Award schemes to create a single type of award, providing flexible support at a level and length appropriate to enable researchers to address the most important questions of relevance to human and animal health and disease. Those in the early stages of their careers should be able to show that they can innovate and drive advances in their field, while those with more experience are expected to be internationally recognised and have achieved more in terms of the originality and impact of their research. Funds are available up to 3 million over a span of up to seven years. The award covers the direct costs of carrying out the research and does not include salary costs. Applications are considered three times a year, with closing dates on 17 July 2015 and 6 November 2015 (further call anticipated January 2016). Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowships This fellowship provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified postdoctoral researchers to make an early start in developing their independent research careers, working in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas. Candidates will be expected to identify an important biomedical research question and to develop and deliver a personal programme to achieve their research aims. Applicants must be in the final year of PhD studies or have no more than one year of 67 7
6 The Wellcome Trust... continued Medical Research Council mrc.ac.uk postdoctoral research experience from the date of the PhD viva to the full application submission deadline. The fellowship is for four years full-time. Fellowships may be taken up on a part-time employment basis with the tenure of award lengthened accordingly. Funds are available for 250,000 and provide support for a basic salary as determined by the host institution, and research expenses. Applications for this scheme are considered twice a year. Deadline: 15 May 2015 and anticipated October Most UK Funders have mailing lists you can join to keep you up to date with their developments and opportunities The MRC fund methodology research from an MRC perspective. This is the study of how best to design, conduct, analyse and evaluate medical and health research and underpins all their science areas. The MRC are looking for projects in a wide range of fields aiming to develop the best methods recipes for research in areas that underpin biomedical science, experimental medicine, clinical trials, population health sciences, health services research and health policy. You can apply at any time (board meetings are January, May and December) and within one of their science areas: Infections and Immunity Molecular and Cellular Medicine Neuroscience and Mental Health Populations and Systems Medicine Global Health Translational Research through the following response mode funding schemes: New investigator research grant The scheme can provide talented earlycareer scientists with a route into a principal investigator position and is aimed at senior post-docs or individuals near the start of their first lectureship. Awards are for three years or more and 84% of a salary is awarded at Full Economic Costing other expenses are available. Research grant MRC research grants are suitable for focused research projects that may be short or long-term in nature. In addition, they can be used to support method development or development and continuation of research facilities and may involve more than one research group or institution. A research grant can be awarded for any period of up to five years, but those of two years or less are for proof of principle or pilot work only. Applications seeking support of greater than three years should provide a clear justification as to why a longer timescale is needed, for example due to specific research deliverables, or the need for prolonged data collection or follow-up. The budget for research grant awards will not typically exceed 1 million. Programme grant Programme grants provide larger, longer term (five years) and renewable programme funding. They aim to help the medical science community to think bigger. A programme is defined as a coordinated and coherent group of related projects, which may be developed to address an inter-related set of questions across a broad scientific area. Under the programme grant scheme you may request support for a period of five years. You must contact the Programme Manager of the relevant MRC Research Board to confirm whether your 89 9
7 Medical Research Council... continued The College of Optometrists college-optometrists.org application fits the scheme - this mandatory step, applies to all new programme grant applications (not renewals) and must be completed at least six weeks before the submission deadline.
