Seminar Smart Ports SmartPorts About the effects of non-line mooring systems on moored vessel motions Alex van Deyzen Date: 23 April

Problem statement Moored ships in harbours may experience large motions Difficult to (un)load containers Page 2

Problem statement Moored ships in harbours may experience large motions Possible collision between grab and ship s hold Page 3

Problem statement Moored ships in harbours may experience large motions Limited reach loading arm Page 4

Problem statement Moored ships in harbours may experience large motions Damage to quay and dangerous to drive in/out Page 5

Desired: Reduction of ship motions Large motions result in: Reduced efficiency (un)loading Increased operational downtime Increased risk of: Breaking lines or buckling fenders Hull damage Damage to quay Fires Oil spillage Motions may be reduced using alternative mooring systems Page 6

PIANC 2012: Advantage of non-line mooring Figure 5.6: Example of benefits from using a vacuum mooring system as compared to a traditional mooring system Research: De Bont et. al Page 7

Cavotec MoorMaster Page 8

Objective research de Bont (2010) To validate software used for simulating the behaviour of moored ships in harbours including MoorMasters Used: Full scale wave and ship motions measurements in the Port of Salalah (Oman) moored with MoorMasters Work that has been done: Modeling of characteristics of MoorMaster in software Comparison between measured and calculated waves and ship motions Page 9

Wave measurements wave radar Long wave peaks at Hz ( T = s) Swell peak at 0.13 Hz ( T = 8 s) Page 10

Displacement (m) Displacement (m) Measured ship motions Case 1: only mooring lines Surge amplitude order of 1 metre 1 Surge time series Time (s) Case 2: mooring lines and MoorMaster units Surge amplitude order of 0.05 metre Time (s) Page 11

Measured ship motion spectra Magnitude of surge motions: Case 1: Surge m0 = 1.45 metre Case 2: Surge m0 = 0.09 metre Frequency of surge motions: Typical frequencies of surge motion < 0.04 Hz (T > 25 s) Page 12

Procedure calculations Wave radar at berth 4 Diffraction Reflection Ocean waves Wave propagations at the berth (Mike 21 BW) Wave forces on the ship (Harberth) Ship motions and mooring forces (Quaysim) Page 13

Calculated ship motions Surge motions Case 1 Amplitude: Measured: Surge m0 = 1.45 m Simulated: Surge m0 = 1.20 m Surge motions Case 2 Amplitude: Measured: Surge m0 = 0.09 m Simulated: Surge m0 = 0.04 m Peak frequencies: Measured: f p = (T p = 83 s) Simulated: f p = (T p = 58 s) Peak frequencies: Measured: f p = (T p = 45 s) Simulated: f p = (T p = 36 s) Page 14

ShoreTension Expected to show the same behaviour Presently working on implementing and validating the system in software: Cooperation between TIL Group, ShoreTension and Royal HaskoningDHV Page 15

Full scale measurements Port of Sines Page 16

Measured ship motions Page 17

Final remarks Both MoorMaster and ShoreTension significantly reduce the motions of a moored ship At present Royal HaskoningDHV is able to simulate the motions of ship moored with MoorMasters In the near future we are also able to do this for a ship moored with ShoreTension cylinders We will be able to estimate the motion reduction using these alternative mooring systems Page 18
