1 CPH Summer Study Abroad Program is proud to announce its 2013 Study Abroad Program for high school and college students. This program is designed to send American students to study in China. This is an experience of a lifetime for students that will broaden their social horizons while developing international awareness and preparing them to be valuable international communicators. This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to study Mandarin and to explore the Chinese culture without committing to an academic year or a full semester abroad. Students may choose a two or three week course of study in one of three regional options: Beijing/Zhengzhou, Beijing/Xiangyang, or Beijing/Shiyang. Participants will stay with host families in China. This will provide students with the opportunity to practice their Chinese language skills in everyday situations such as at the market place or while visiting new friends. Program Fees Include: Room and Board. All meals while at the school and in host family home. All costs associated with scheduled day and overnight excursions in China. Airport transfers upon arrival and departure. International medical insurance. Arrival orientation in Beijing. Daily intensive Chinese Language Course. All language course textbooks and learning materials. Tuition. All educational/program fees. Supervision and support throughout the program. * The cost of airfare, passport, tourist visa (required for China), and personal travel expenses are the responsibility of each student. 1

2 CPH scholarship opportunities: All students who finish the application by February 1st, 2013 will be considered for enrollment in the Scholarship Program. Program Fees will be discounted or waived for candidates of the CPH Scholarship Program. Scholarship will cover cost of programs fees only and does not include: airfare, visa application fees, and other expenses for personal needs. Scholarship Application Requirements: Student must be currently enrolled in middle or high school or be a freshman in college. Student must show interest in Chinese culture or have taken a Chinese language class. Student is required to write a one-page essay answering the following questions: 1. From your own experiences, tell us why you think cultural exchange is important? 2. Why have you chosen China as your study abroad destination and what would you contribute to Chinese schools? 3. How would you act as an ambassador to share your experiences with others? Students who apply for the scholarship need to submit their application by February 1st, 2013, along with the $75 application fee payable to. Applications and checks should be mailed to: Attn: Admission Office 4455 LBJ Freeway, Suite 909 Dallas, TX Program Requirements for Participants All participants are required to submit a two-minute video and a one to two page essay about their experience in the CPH China study abroad program one week after the completion of the program. All participants will also be asked to share their experience with their school, classmates, friends, and family. 2

3 All participants will be awarded with a CPH International Education Ambassador certificate. Participants are responsible for: International and domestic airfares. Visa application fee. American passport. Personal spending money for the duration of the program and any other travel and extensions beyond the scheduled events and activities. Application Fee is 100% refundable if application is declined by CPH. Program Balance is due in full no later than February 20th. Please note that a $15 fee will be applied for returned checks. Regional Options for the Summer Study Abroad Program Beijing for orientation with school in Zhengzhou Beijing for orientation with school in Xiangyang Beijing for orientation with school in Shiyan Beijing is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and walled gateways. Sites such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven, will 4

5 capture your imagination during your time in Beijing. In addition to the city's amazing architecture, Beijing is also known as the center for culture and art in China. Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of Henan province, located in central China. The Yellow River carves its way through Henan and it boasts four of eight China's ancient capitals. Zhengzhou is considered the birthplace of Chinese civilization. Other scenic marvels include the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the home of China's most famous martial art form; Kung Fu. Visitors can easily make day trips to the Shaolin Temple where Kung Fu originated. Xiangyang is a famous national-level historical and cultural city in China and has a history of more than 2,800 years. Remnants of old Xianyang is located south of the Han River and contains one of the oldest still-intact city walls in China. Xiangyang served prominent historical roles in both the Ancient and Pre-Modern Periods of Chinese history from the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. The city was the site for many Chinese Revolutionary battles and home to many historical figures such as Liu Bei, a famous warlord from the Three Kingdom Period. 5

6 Shiyan is commonly known as the Automotive Center of China. In 1967 teams of Chinese workers and engineers were sent to Shiyan as the site for China s automotive industry because the surrounding mountains and relative inaccessibility could act as a barrier against foreign attack. Shiyan is the birthplace of Taoism and the Wudang Martial Arts. Wudang Taoism has a history of several thousand years. The surrounding areas are dotted with more than 200 Taoist monastic temples and religious sites. Program Partner Schools (Consider among the top Chinese High Schools): 1. Zhengzhou No. 57 High School Founded in 1947, it has 40 classes, 2,700 students, 145 teacher, and staff. 2. Shiyang Dongfeng High School Founded in 1978, it has 48 classes, 2,900 students, 300 teachers, and staff. 6

7 3. Xiangyang No. 5 High School Founded in 1902, it has 65 classes, 4,600 students, 288 teachers, and staff. Once the program is completed, there will be ample opportunity for sightseeing. 8 SHANGHAI Shanghai is the largest city by population in the People's Republic of China and the largest city by population in the world. Sightseeing: Pudong Financial District; Oriental Pearl Tower; Huangpu River and The Bund; ancient landscape architecture of Chenhuang area; Chinese traditional food. WUXI Wuxi is an old city in Jiangsu province in the People's Republic of China. Divided by Lake Tai, Wuxi borders Changzhou to the west and Suzhou to the east. Sightseeing: Xue Family Garden; Purple Sand Teapot Museum; China Central TV station filming center; Tai Lake. Day 3: Wuxi to Nanjing (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) 8

9 NANJING Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China and has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Sightseeing: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum; Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge (was the third bridge over the Yangtze); Stone City Park. Day 4: Nanjing to Suzhou (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) SUZHOU Suzhou is a major city located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province in Eastern China, located adjacent to Shanghai Municipality. Originally founded in 514 BC, Suzhou has more than 2,500 years of rich history. Many relics of the past are found here. The city's canals, stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens have contributed to its status as one of the top tourist attractions in China. Sightseeing: Hanshan Temple; The Grand Canal (also known as the Beijing- Hangzhou Grand Canal, is the longest canal or artificial river in the world, 1,400 miles long); Qilishantang Old Street. 9

10 Day 5: Suzhou to Hangzhou (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) HANGZHOU Hangzhou is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China. It is governed as a sub-provincial city. It has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China for much of the last 1,000 years, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. The city's West Lake is its best-known attraction. Sightseeing: Boat tour on West Lake; Flower Port fish viewing; tasting the local signature food; West Lake singing and dancing show; Longjing Tea tasting. Day 6: Hangzhou to Shanghai (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) Back to Shanghai after lunch: Xintiandi (an affluent, shopping, eating and entertainment district of Shanghai); Nanjing Street; night sightseeing on Huangpu River. Day 7: Shanghai (Breakfast) Leave for the airport. 10
