3 1 General 1.1 Location and accessibility Wengen is part of the Jungfrau Region and is located at 1,250 meters above sea level. Situated on a beautiful sunny terrace, Wengen is located 400 meters above Lauterbrunnen at the foot of the Jungfrau. Wengen is only accessible by train because it is not connected to the road network. From Lauterbrunnen, Wengen is accessed by the Wengernalp train which was built in Arrival Accessibility by car from Zurich is around 128 kilometers, from Basel 159 km, 226 km from Geneva and 68 km from Bern. By train you reach Lauterbrunnen within about 2 ¾ hours from Basel and Zurich, Geneva in around 3 ¾ hours and about 1 ¾ hours from Bern. In Lauterbrunnen, travelers are switched to the gear train, which takes you within about 15 minutes to Wengen. The trip on the Wengernalp train offers a wonderful view of the Lauterbrunnen valley and the mountains. Car parking is available directly at the Lauterbrunnen train station. 2

4 2 Wengen - active recreation in another world Information about Wengen: This charming and manageable village of Wengen lies on a sunny terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. Being exclusively accessible by train makes it a noise- free, and safe holiday location. The fresh mountain air provides a lot of energy for the pursuit of numerous outdoor activities. Wengen is an excellent starting point for various excursions in the Jungfrau Region. For instance, the Männlichen, the Kleine Scheidegg, the Jungfraujoch, even Mürren and the Schilthorn are quickly reached. Thanks to the Lauberhorn Race, which takes place in each January, Wengen has made a name for itself in the world. The longest 4.5- kilometer-long descent of the Ski World Cup annually attracts tens of thousands of skiing enthusiasts. An ideal way to venture down this famous descent on skis is a must and an unforgettable experience for every visitor. Sunny Wengen has something to offer everyone: many opportunities for sports enthusiasts, a retreat for those seeking peace and car-free streets for children. 2.1 World Famous Thanks to Lauberhorn World Cup Information on the Lauberhorn Race: Born on 1 st January 1900, Ernst Gertsch is the founding father of the Lauberhorn races, which always takes place in January in Wengen beginning from the Lauberhorn. The origins of the Lauberhorn race began on 28 November 1929 with the signing of the memorandum by Ernst Gertsch and the cofounders of the Swiss Academic Ski Club. With this race, a new era dawned for alpine ski racing. The Lauberhorn downhill is 4.5 kilometers, the longest run in the Ski World Cup. Today s top athletes need an average of 2:30 minutes and reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. What makes the Lauberhorn downhill so special? There are numerous refinements that need to be mastered during the descent. For instance, the Russisprung, the Hundschopf - this narrow and rocky passage - or the finish S, the key part of the race. 3

5 2.2 Best View of the Jungfrau Wengen enjoys an incomparable view of the Jungfrau. At 4,158 meters above sea level it is the third highest mountain in the Bernese Alps. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, it forms the most famous triumvirate of Switzerland. Mountaineering began here with the first ascent of the Jungfrau. 6 3 Winter Highlights Information about the ski resorts: Skiing Kleine Scheidegg The ski area with 102 km of slopes and 30 kilometers of toboggan runs is located directly at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In the region of Kleine Scheidegg you will find just the right level from beginner slopes to the World Cup Lauberhorn piste. The world-famous Lauberhorn World Cup downhill starts in this ski area and is around 4.5 km in length running down to Wengen. Accessibility from the ski resort of Wengen is by the cog railway or by cable car (Wengen-Männlichen). The descent leads directly to Wengen. 3.2 Exploring the snowy mountains - tobogganing and winter hiking Thanks to the 100 km of winter hiking and toboggan runs, extending over the entire Jungfrau Region, even non- skiers feel comfortable in Wengen. Since winter 2013/2014 a snowshoe trail leads through the snowy mountain landscape on the Leiterhorn. An incredible panorama makes the effort of the ascent disappear immediately. The "Fox Run" will take you from the station Wengernalp to Wengen. The 4.5 -kilometer-long toboggan run which follows along the Lauberhorn downhill course demands some experience despite careful preparation of the piste. 5

7 4 Summer Highlights 4.1 Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe 3,454 m asl Information about the Jungfraujoch, Kleine Scheidegg and First: The climax of a visit to Switzerland is the journey to the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 meters, the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. From Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen an alpine cog railway runs to Kleine Scheidegg station at the foot of the world-famous North Face. The journey from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch goes through the Eiger and Mönch, offering stunning views, while two intermediate stops in the middle of the Eiger North Face, show the village of Grindelwald and as well as the Eismeer glacier. The pioneer Adolf Guyer-Zeller realized this spectacular rail project over 100 years ago: on 1 August 1912 when the first train finally drove to Jungfraujoch. 4.2 Kleine Scheidegg 2,061 m asl Directly below the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is the Kleine Scheidegg. It offers visitors a spectacular view of the notorious Eiger North Face. Earlier from here, in 1936, spectators watched as four climbers lost their lives in the mountain wall in a dramatic way. On the Kleine Scheidegg there is the train station, restaurants and hotels. It is the starting point for hiking and travel to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. 4.3 Männlichen 2,227 m asl For more information on Männlichen: A trip to the Männlichen offers great family memories. During the cable car from Wengen the impressive Bernese Alps come to the foreground. In addition to numerous traditional trails for hiking, experience six adventure routes for young and old. 6

From traditional and more authentic Swiss cuisine, to Italian pizza and pasta, to international delicacies, there is something for everyone. The restaurant Eigergletscher is the highest confiserie in Europe with the best chocolate known as the fine Eigerspitzli. This is a sweet temptation for all chocolate lovers. 6.4 Shopping Food and sports shops, as well as souvenir shops invite you to stroll through the village street of Wengen. 6.5 Entertainment All year round enjoy a diversity of bars, a nightclub and a cinema for your entertainment. 10 7 Top Events Winter 2015/2016 International Lauberhorn Races in Wengen Information on the Lauberhorn Races: Date: January 2016 The longest 4.5 kilometer race in the FIS World Cup is the famous Lauberhorn downhill. Over three days in January, tens of thousands of skiing enthusiasts flock to Wengen to cheer the top athletes. SnowpenAir on the Kleine Scheidegg Information for SnowpenAir: Date: 02 April 2016 At 2,061 m above sea level, the SnowpenAir is the highest open-air concert in the snow which takes place at Kleine Scheidegg against the unique backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In winter, a variety of events for the whole family take place in the village square. This winter watch avalanche dog handlers displaying the skills of their dogs. For about 30 minutes the dogs demonstrate how they can save lives under instructions from their handlers. 11 8 Top Events Summer 2016 Tatort Jungfrau Information about Tatort Jungfrau: Date: May 2016 In 2016, the spectacular mountains of the Jungfrau Region invite the Swiss population for the fourth time to hunt for a killer. A corpse in the grass and a handful of suspects: so begins crime thrillers on television or between the covers of such books. On Pentecost 2016, however, this will be experienced live, directly at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Participants will take about three days to explore the trail of the murderer, by train and on foot throughout the Jungfrau region. Mountain Spring Festival Männlichen Information about the mountain spring festival and the folk costume festival on Männlichen: Date: 26 June 2016 Experience Swiss traditions and folklore presentations on the Männlichen. Celebrate the mountain spring and enjoy the entertainment of the various groups who gather at the Männlichen. Folk Costume Festival Männlichen Date: 24 July 2016 Authentic, traditional and unforgettable - the Männlichen Folk Costume Festival invites you to marvel at traditional costumes from different cantons, surrounded by appropriate folk music in a programme befitting the fascinating mountain scenery. The folkloric costume performances include dances, yodeling duets, alphorn trios, flag throwers, Central Swiss whip crackers. 10

12 Mendelssohn Music Week Information about the Mendelssohn Music Week: Date: August 2016 In August 1842, Felix Mendelssohn took the long way to Wengen to make there probably the oldest sketch of Wengen with the Jungfrau in the background. In the summer of 2015, five concerts for the soul and listening will take place at the Reformed Church Wengen. Inferno Triathlon Information about the Inferno Triathlon: Date: 20 August 2016 This is a demanding sport event where participants race from Thun to Interlaken, then Meiringen and finally into the heart of the Jungfrau region. Competitors must cover 3.1 km of swimming and 97 km of biking on the road. This is followed by 30 km on the mountain bike and finally a 25 km mountain run. Jungfrau Marathon Information about the Jungfrau Marathon: Date: September 2016 The Jungfrau Marathon presents the most beautiful marathon course in the world! Imagine the backdrop of the fantastic mountain giants, the great changing scenery from start to finish. This is a challenge, a feat that ascends 1,839 meters in altitude between Interlaken and the Kleine Scheidegg. 11
