6 INTRODUCING... CIRA Ontario Board Member Chris Wilson Chris Wilson is an Elementary Physical Education Teacher at Clemens Mill Public School in Cambridge, Ontario. He has been a teacher with the Waterloo District School Board since 1989, and has experience teaching a variety of school subjects. Chris is the author of "Playday Mayday", "Out of the Box" and co author of "Replay", "Follow the Leader" and "Scooters & Hoops". He has been working with CIRA Ontario for four years, and has been a member since the early 90s. Chris also works as a teacher facilitator at OELC. Chris keeps in shape by working out at the gym after a life filled with many competitive sports including triathlons, mountain biking, trampolining, gymnastics, hockey, football, baseball, skiing, sailing and many more. Chris lives in Brantford with his wife Lynn (a Neonatal nurse) and his two daughters (Taylor and Mikaela). Chris has a special interest in Spirit Days and Theme days. His favourite intramural idea is Survivor intramurals, which have been a vital component of his program for years. He would love to see a time when Intramurals become a mandated part of the Ontario curriculum. We ll feature another CIRA Ontario Executive Member in our next issue of INPUT 6

7 Forming Teams by Shayla Messenger The CIRA Intramural Awards recognizes schools with intramural success. Over fifty schools have submitted an application for this award. Those who have applied summarized the achievements and highlights of their intramural programs. Many of the applicants mentioned the ways in which they formed teams. There are many ways to form teams, each providing a different effect to the intramural experience. A few examples include randomization, giving the students control, or organizing by grade level. The following schools have developed their own systems for forming teams within their intramural program. Sherwood Mills Sherwood Mills Sharks have 10 intramural shark teams who compete in a grade level game. Frank Ryan Catholic Senior Elementary Students are asked to put together teams of ten players to participate in intramurals for the rest of the year. Turnbull School Prior to the start of a new activity, each student is personally ask if he or she would like to participate in the program by a teacher. The group is then divided into teams by the Head of Athletics. The roster and game schedule is posted on the PE bulletin board. Canadian Martyr's School Every month there is a new program and students sign up on a month to month basis. They have an opportunity to sign up with a friend. They are then placed on teams. St. Philip Teams are changed around with each activity so students get to play with a variety of their peers. In our Junior Intramural program there are about students who sign up. They are placed on teams of mixed abilities. The formation of teams is a very important process for intramurals. Each way of forming a team has both positive and negative effects. One must review their intramural program and decide which way of forming a team is the most beneficial for their school. It is important to weigh the pros and the cons of each particular form of team building so that one can make an informed decision. The way in which a team is formed is an essential part of a successful intramural program. More Ways to Form Teams Organized Free Play The Gym is open for intramural time. There are no specific teams, no leagues or schedules; the students just show up, organize scrub teams and play. The benefits of this system are: 1. Participants play simply for the fun of playing. 2. Teams can be made up from a group. The drawbacks of this system are: 1. Weaker players may feel too inhibited to join in if the jocks are playing; 2. Does not promote group togetherness or a feeling of belonging. All Comers Sign Up Everyone who is interested in participating in the activity signs up, by the entry deadline by: 1. Signing their names on a posted list; 2. Giving their names to the home room teacher. Following the entry deadline, the participants are organized into groups or teams. Team lists are then posted. The benefits of this system are: 1. Equal teams, thus better competition. 2. All players are on a team. 3. Students get to know other than their friends. The drawbacks of this system are: 1. Students may feel uncomfortable playing with students they don t know; 2. More work for the Intramural Council (making teams).
