2 How do I enrol? All learners must provide proof of ID and National Insurance Number. If claiming a concession proof of benefit must be provided. No early enrolments will be permitted. All enrolments are on a first come first served basis. Enrolments cannot be made for learners who are unable to attend the enrolment session. Enrolment times are listed at the back of this brochure by Centre details. If you miss enrolment times, don t worry. It will be possible to enrol at the first session of the class of your choice, unless the class is full. Some classes will not be able to run unless there are 10 learners enrolled by week 3 of the course. Please contact us if you are unsure if a class is for you or not, we can arrange for the class tutor to give you a call. Increase your confidence in everyday English and Maths Help your children with their school work Get help with form filling, CV writing and budgeting Improve your job prospects and gain a qualification Progress onto further training or education ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) If English is not your main language, you can do a course to help improve your English. What does an ESOL course cover? Speaking and listening Reading and writing Vocabulary Punctuation and grammar Classes are held in Risca and Caerphilly. THERE MAY BE A FEE TO PAY. 5 Risca Basic Skills Unit All classes are FREE! FAMILY LEARNING Family Learning allows parents to improve their own literacy/numeracy skills alongside their child/children in their home, local school or community venue. Experience a fun learning activity as a family Find out more about what your child is learning in school Have the opportunity to improve your own skills and widen your own learning Parents/carers can take part in a 6 week programme in the home or 12 week school or community group. Sessions are held during the day and after school. For a FREE callback, text your name to LANGUAGE AND PLAY Fun, interactive sessions for parents and children. (0-4 years) in the home, nurseries, libraries, community centres and schools. LAP aims to promote children s language development through play LAP helps to develop good speaking and listening skills which prepare children for school Playing and learning together helps to increase confidence and social skills Sessions are free, run for 6 weeks and last for an hour. 6 Adult Education Courses 2016/2017 Risca Basic Skills Unit DIGITAL LITERACY (Using IT and the Internet) This course will teach you the essential skills to begin computing with confidence. What does a Digital Literacy course cover? How to turn on and turn off a digital device Accessing the internet safely How to open a folder and file How to enter simple information to complete a task Presenting information Using a digital device - Smart phones, tablets, PC, laptops, digital cameras, printers, etc. e-books, online, newspapers, etc. Working with others to solve a simple digital task. How to enhance a digital resource - applying colour, different fonts, etc. How to use digital tools - social media, instant messaging, smart phones, tablets, etc. You will have the opportunity to achieve an accredited certificate. 7 Employability Courses COMPUTER TASTER COURSES These courses will help you learn the essential skills to begin computing with confidence, be more productive at home and at work, stay safe online, use technology to complement your lifestyle, and consider careers where you can put your skills to work. Call us on for further details. FOOD SAFETY IN CATERING LEVEL 2 1 DAY COURSE The qualification is designed principally for those who are, or intend to be, food handlers working in catering. Day: Tuesday Venue: Blackwood Cost: from EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE (ECDL) EXTRA ECDL Extra promotes the efficient use of popular office application software including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Day: 6-9 pm Venue: Oxford House Cost: 237** POOL LIFEGUARD AWARD The HABC Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding is an accredited qualification is valid for two years and is of equal standing to other Pool Lifeguard qualifications. Candidates can keep up to date with regular on-going training, it provides the necessary skills and knowledge for learners who wish to apply for posts as a pool lifeguard (100 % attendance is required). You need to be able to swim front crawl for 50 metres with confidence in 50 seconds. The course will also include the EFAW and AED awards. If successful you will gain three qualifications. CLASSROOM ASSISTANT AGORED LEVEL 2 This qualification is aimed at people who would like an introduction into becoming a teaching assistant in a school and could lead onto the Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Day: Wednesday pm Venue: 15 weeks Cost: 78 (concessions apply)** SUPPORTING TEACHING & LEARNING IN SCHOOLS LEVEL 2 This qualification will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary or special schools. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people s develop-ment, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and commu-nication and professional relationships. You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. Day: 6-9 pm Venue: Blackwood Cost: 395** (concessions apply) GCSE ENGLISH Day: Wednesday Venue: Blackwod Adult Education Centre Cost: 165 (concessions apply) GCSE MATHS Day: Venue: Blackwod Adult Education Centre Cost: 165 (concessions apply) THE AWARD IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING 30 hours The HABC Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) has been designed to provide an introduction to teaching for individuals who would like to work or currently work within FE Colleges, Independent Training Providers and/or Local Authorities. It can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, such as: Individuals not currently teaching or training Individuals currently teaching and training, including those new to the profession Learners are required to gather knowledge about the role and responsibilities of a teacher. During this intensive course, they will be encouraged to develop skills which will enable them to plan, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions. You will be required to plan and deliver a number of micro teaching sessions, and submit three academic assignments ( words each using the Harvard referencing technique), all of which will mean extra work outside of the taught classroom sessions noted below. What are the entry requirements for this qualification? Learners must be aged 19+ and undertake a formal initial assessment for English, mathematics and ICT. You will be tested on these entry requirements. You will be expected to conduct micro teaches using ICT. Learners must produce a portfolio of evidence that will meet the learning outcomes for the units that have been selected. 7
