Reflection is an essential aspect of development processes. Through reflection, new questions are raised and we gain a broader understanding. The artistic perspective is therefore of great importance. Through the Inside Wood exhibition, we want to invite the audience to enter into a state that promotes reflection, so that new narratives can arise. Wood is the exhibition s key conceptual element. The exhibition shows processes and experiments that test out new visual connections and the properties of wood as a material. Inside Wood will also exhibit prototypes that are the result of investigative and creative processes, and several of them are now established products in the market. At Inside Wood, you can become acquainted with a domain and a material that opens possibilities for a sensuous experience for everyone. It is a journey into the first seeds of reflection and wonder, a journey through growth processes and experimentation, testing and maturation, leading to fully-fledged ideas that are ready to become a part of our everyday lives for generations to come. 3
Inside Wood is all about cooperation at different levels. At the core of the project is the research community at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHiB), who, along with students, recognised designers, artists and alumni have created designs that explore wood as a material, with all its qualities and possibilities. The exhibition will display a selection of on-going exploratory and experimental processes. These collaborations between KHiB and contributors serve as a breeding ground in which new and relevant design topics can be explored. Bergen Academy of Art and Design has made active efforts to promote such collaborations in order to contribute to and create new discourses and possibilities that go beyond conventional design. It is with great pleasure that we present Inside Wood, Milan Mona Larsen Dean, Department of Design 4
Everyone should be able to experience the space around them. The sensuous space should tell us more than just which direction the restrooms are located. At KHiB, it is all about giving spaces a content and a story that makes them both aesthetically beautiful and functional, irrespective of sensory or functional impairments. ELI-KIRSTIN EIDE PROFESSOR IN SPATIAL DESIGN / INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE: Wood from different types of trees has different properties as regards touch, acoustics, smell, weathering and durability. Trees themselves have a story to tell, depending on where they are planted, harvested and processed. Bringing natural materials into a space adds a sensuous dimension for everyone who uses it. VILDE ØRITSLAND HOUGE & TUVA RIVEDAL TJUGEN STUDENTS (MA1) Wood as a material creates a sense of familiarity with the object. Through different forms of experience with wood we get to know the material in a particular way. In a world that alienates us more and more due to technical innovations; wood, trees and forests can be a reminder of the grander scale in which we all have a place. ODD TORLEIV FURNES ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MUSIC, NLA UNI COLLEGE ÅSE HUUS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN VISUAL COMMUNCATION / GRAPHIC DESIGNER: Which stories can be told with the tree as a starting point? In the project Quiet Observations I want to challenge our abilities to reach these stories through visual observations. MAGNUS NYQUIST GRAPHIC DESIGNER, BERGEN DESIGNINKUBATOR TORKELL BERNTSEN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MOTION GRAPHICS AND 3D DESIGN: The juxtaposition between highly digital oriented work and an organic material such as wood is very interesting, as a combination of these two gives room for new narratives and understandings. 5
SANDRA ISABELL AASEN STUDENT (MA1): Fjell lamp ASTRID EMMERHOFF LOTHE STUDENT (BA3): Plantfibres gain a remarkable strenght by weaving and braiding thin and fragile fibres. Beautiful, solemn patterns also emerge as a result of the process. This has lead me explore weaving and braiding qualities in solid wood, in particular, steam bending and weaving with ash. LENA MARI SKJOLDAL KOLÅS STUDENT (BA3): People often discard wooden objects that have flaws like cracks or deformations. I wanted to highlight the imperfections and use the flaws to create something unique with a great aestetic. TORA SCHEI RØRVIK STUDENT (BA3): By using bio-resin in combination with hard wood, small wooden objects and plants, a broader range of the woods identity is captured into one design. Bio-resin is a form of plastic that contains bio-based renewable feedstock and is more eco-friendly than normal plastic. BA2 STUDENTS: The students experimentation in their courses has led to a different exhibition design that takes universal design into account by conveying the many sensory qualities of wood. PETTER BERGERUD PROFESSOR / ARCHITECT: Crazy, but not stupid. Our artistic and experimental approach has a different starting point than the engineers. By challenging the wood we visualise the invisible and make the impossible possible. JONAS B. EVENSEN KHIB ALUMNI: Liquid wood is a biodegradable plastic based on lignin. Lignin is a natural raw material found in plants and trees and is also extracted as a byproduct in the production of paper. The material has great potential in design as an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics. It is not an experiment if you know it will work. Wood has been used for generations and is still a material full of untapped potential. Without getting caught up in specific solutions, blueprints or proposals, through extensive courses, staff and students have by trial and error pushed the boundaries of wood as a material. 6
Between the experiment and the product, we find the prototype. The idea takes on a physical form so that it can be communicated to the outside world. Others can take part in the idea by touching, testing and discussing it. In this way, a prototype becomes a precondition for the transfer of knowledge and learning SØLVE WESTLI STUDENT (BA3): Ballerina 2 JENNIFER CENA STUDENT (BA3): Umi 3 ISELIN LINDMARK DUBLAND STUDENT (BA3): Birk 4 THOMAS R. SIVERTSEN STUDENT (BA3): Jongleur 5 ANDERS BERG KHIB ALUMNI: SayO 6 STINE KNUDSEN AAS KHIB ALUMNI: ROOT 7 LASSE TORSSON HUSABØ STUDENT (MA1): Niveau 8 GRIDY KHIB ALUMNI: Lolly 7
We wish to provide and promote design products that are sustainable in the long term, and at the same time also manage to explore different qualities such as form, function and production processes. The collaboration between alumni and the industry is essential we need everyone to pull in the same sustainable direction. DAVE VIKØREN PROFESSOR IN FURNITURE DESIGN / PROJECT MANAGER OF INSIDE WOOD: The duration of furniture depends on both technical and visual qualities. Wood used in the correct way ages with beauty. As our world oceans are filled with plastic and junk, wood brings added value in the form of sustainable furniture to last across generations. Photo: Magne Sandnes Photo: Marie Jacob Photo: Brdr.
