1 Successful IFD Congress in Prague The International Federation for the Roofing Trade IFD has organised the 56 th IFD Congress and the 21 st World Championship for Young Roofers for the first time in the Czech Republic The Roofing, Tinsmith and Carpentry Federation KPT of the Czech Republic successfully carried out the IFD Congress and the IFD World Championship of the Roofing Trade. The IFD president Gordon C Penrose could welcome round 160 delegates and guests. Prague, the city of the congress and world championship, is the capital of the Czech Republic and in history was the residence city of the Bohemian kingdom and capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The Golden City lies on the Moldau, is an old traditional university city and shows a compact impressed cityscape of Gothic and Baroque. World known are the historical city centre, the Charles Bridge and the Hradschin Castle. The city has approximately 1,2 million inhabitants and alone is worth a visit. The World Championship for Young Roofers took place in a new and modern exhibition centre in Letnany on the outskirts of Prague. Commission meetings, conference and general meeting in the Hotel Diplomat The IFD (International Federation for the Roofing Trade) represents the interest of all roofers world-wide, however, with emphasis on Europe. The Congress and the World Championship takes place every year. IFD Commission Meetings Before the congress was officially opened, the delegates of the four commissions met for internal meetings. Thereby the work of the past year was introduced individually, and decisions on further activities were made. General Commission This commission concerned itself, amongst others, with economy, social network, occupational training, organisation and finances as well as determining the IFD budget. In the applicable rules for the IFD World Championship, the special prize was newly regulated. Many agenda items, which were decided at the IFD general assembly, had made their discussions in the commission meeting. A change of the statute also belonged here. Pitched Roofing and Facades Commission In this commission a decision was made regarding the publication of the IFD Guidelines for the design and application of measures for rainproofing. A project on façades was introduced by the chairman of the commission Hansjörg Walliser from the Swiss Federation SVDW. The status of the European Norm pren Hygrothermal performance of buildings - Resistance to wind driven rain of roof coverings with discontinuously laid small elements - Test method was elucidated by Axel Granz from Germany. Furthermore, the commission also dealt with the energy efficiency of buildings. Waterproofing Commission In the commission waterproofing the IFD Guidelines for the Design and Application of Roof Waterproofing - Flat Roof Guidelines was accepted. Established was to continue working 1

2 on the IFD-Guidelines for waterproofing on structures. For this further meetings in a small work group were fixed. Science and Technique Commission Some new participants could be welcomed, at the same time some members were hindered to participate for various reasons. Advice and the further proceedings for the introduction of an additional diploma for roof construction were determined. Prof. Dr. Reiner Schoepe introduced in a speech the weathering station of the previous WGD-European scientific society for roof construction research at the TU Kosice as well as the knowledge gained thereby. Prof. Dr. Reiner Schoepe was elected official chairman of the commission during the meeting. This election was necessary as Mr. Schoepe could not take part in the actual election year at the meeting last year. Mr. Heinz Peter Raidt from the IFD-Partner member Dörken GmbH & Co. KG was elected vice chairman. IFD-Congress KPT-President Zdenek Svarc and IFD-President Gordon C. Penrose welcomed the participants on Thursday afternoon in the Hotel Diplomat in Prague and thereafter extended an invitation to a bus journey through Prague and to Letnany. There, all participants had the possibility to visit the World Championship of Young Roofers in the big exhibition hall. The experts could certainly recognise the differences in the performances of the teams, and each was able to find their own favourite, however, the result was only announced on Friday evening. Firstly, in the evening a festive concert was given in the Hradschin Cathedral and thereafter a typical Czech dinner with music. The actual conference program started on Friday. IFD-President Gordon Penrose and General Secretary Detlef Stauch manifested that other than representatives from Latvia, all further 17 full members were present during the congress. In addition, the President of the Roofing Federation from Estonia could be welcomed for the first time. Conference Program To start, the head of the building department councillor Knorr, from the Czech industrial administration, gave an overview about the development of the building sector in the last twenty years. The president of the Czech Roofing, Tinsmith and Carpentry Federation presented the activities of the Czech Roofing Trade. IFD Secretary General Detlef Stauch presented the results of the research project, Euractive Roofer. Besides the IFD, 7 IFD members and 2 other federations were involved. 8 roofing companies and 4 solar companies as well as 7 research institutes and 3 universities were involved. The central work program of the project EURACTIVE ROOFer concentrated on new roof concepts. Important items were: To obtain a first overview about active roofs within Europe and to compile a data base, in which this overview is involved. To define the boundary conditions for new developed products through the collection of relevant results of the research orientated work groups in the data base. To recommend integrated solutions for active roofs including the demonstration of parameters and characteristic for solar energy systems, aspects of functional 2

3 application and the usefulness of rooms under roofs, illumination, ventilation and safety. The development of new and strong involved as well as intelligent concepts for active roofs under consideration of synergies between different requirements with regard to these roofs. The development and provision of decision guidance for integrated design of active roofs. The innovative solar thermal roof development, as for example, the use of large solar collectors in the roof. The innovative photovoltaic and thermal design in the case in which the roof can produce both, electricity and warmth, which in some cases can also lead to increasing the photovoltaic output, for example when ventilation can be pre-heated through the photovoltaic module. Innovative active roofs, combined with an innovative under roof construction with a high quality and a long life expectancy. The enquiries will be introduced in a European training program for the federations. Important points are included: 1. To improve competiveness and to increase the possibilities of the roofing trade and solar companies, in particular through information about active roofs, developed in this project. 2. To develop a general training program for active roofers in Europe. 3. To train the national roofing federations about the necessity of this program. 4. To develop a national training program, based on the general training program. In this context, IFD president Gordon Penrose complimented the comprehensive research work and the dedication of the members. Mrs. Prof. Dr. Ing. Ingrid Šenitková, Dean of the Building Industry Faculty of the Technical University Kosice in Slovakia, commented on strategies for interior-environmental quality (IEQ) in buildings. Thereby, she particularly also concentrated on the importance of energy efficiency. Two speeches from Austria followed. Firstly, Wolfgang Hubner from IFB Institute for Flat Roof Construction and Sealing of Buildings reported about a concept for certified roofs. Ing. Werner Linhart then talked about a concept on safety equipment and classification of roofs for use, service and maintenance. After the speech by Peter Rogerson from the NFRC Roofing federation from Great Britain about the Trade World Games, World Skill, which will take place in London in 2011, lively discussions were held. The further development of the IFD World Championship for Young Roofers was also brought into play here. Further consultation shall now follow, firstly in an internal circle. The afternoon conference was moulded with one theme: How to interest young kids for roofing. Many projects from Czech Republic, Switzerland, from Germany and from the industry were introduced. One project from Holland was commented on as an addition on Saturday morning. A lot of knowledge was mediated. On site it was already determined, that the listed ideas from other countries would be taken up. 3

4 IFD Gala Evening On Friday evening the festive gala evening took place in a big hall of the Slavic house. Thundering applauses of the round three hundred and forty guests gathered around the Bambini Di Praga choir, who welcomed the participating countries with their traditional songs. Afterwards Walter Claes was honoured with the IFD-Distinction and Axel Granz with the IFD-Honorary Pin for their services to the IFD. Highlight of the evening was the introduction of participants at the IFD World Championship for Young Roofers with the tribute of the winner and the placing moderated by Secretary General Stauch. 33 teams from 16 countries competed in 3 categories (Pitched Roofing, Waterproofing, Metal roofing) for first place. The guests had to wait a long time for the results. The roofers with their mentors then went to the front of the stage and Gordon Penrose opened the envelopes from the umpire. Switzerland was the winner in both categories Pitched Roofing and Waterproofing. France was the winner in the category of Metal roofing. In his function as Zedach-Supervisory board chairman, ZVDH-Vice president Andrè Büschkes gave the pitched roofing winners from Switzerland each a cheque to the value of 750 Euro. The flat roof winners were equally happy to receive a cheque in the same amount, this time sponsored by ESWA the European Singleply Waterproofing Federation, handed over by the DUD Manageress Karin Arz. The winning team in the category of metal roofing were pleased to receive the same amount donated by PREFA and handed over by the Managing Director Walter M. Schneeweiss. IFD World Championship The 21st World Championship was once again something special. For the first time it took palace in the Czech Republic, in Prague, for the first time in three categories and for the first time with 33 teams and the first time with 16 countries. A fantastic number for the IFD and an outstanding result. Luxembourg had to cancel at short notice, Sweden enquired at short notice, South Africa and the USA, who has participated, could not partake this year. The participants of the pitched roof competition had to carry out the covering of a ventilated pitched roof, 39 degrees, in the form of a mono-pitched roof with valley and ridge divided into three areas. On the first day, the middle part of the model, in which the valley was, was covered with Biber clay tiles in double overlap. Belonging to the assignment of tasks was the application of underlay, mounting of the counter battens and main battens as well as the installation of a roof window, size 55/78 inclusive of a frame. During the installation of the window, the roofers had to pay particular attention to the connection of the underlay. The valley was carried out as an integrated two-tile-wide valley. The side abutment to the second part of the model, in which the ridge was found, was laid with the use of metal sheeting. On the second day the young roofers attacked the right part of the model. Here, as the day before, the underlay, counter batten and main batten had to be laid. The roof area was covered with concrete roofing tiles. Here, the left abutment to the biber covering was also carried out with metal sheeting. The ridge was laid dry, to ensure a professional accomplishment, a ridge and flash band was used. The outer right side of the model was carried out using verge board tiles. In the main roof area a roof window was also built in. The underlay was tightly connected, as all boundary areas, to the window which was 55/78 big. On the last day the roofers covered the left part of the model according to free choice. In the area of waterproofing, a non-gradient model in which there were two identical roof areas, on the one hand had to be covered with waterproofing out of bitumen sheeting and on the other hand with a PVC plastic sheeting. In both areas the roof application had to be carried out with thermal insulation and many details. On the head side a eave abutment was present; the outer side had to be carried out as a wall abutment and the partition of the model as an 4

5 attic with inner and outer corners. Furthermore, the roofers built in a roof gully and an elevated roof penetration in both areas. On the first day, the waterproofing was carried out using bitumen sheeting. The assembly was as follows: Roof boarding, vapour barrier and thermal insulation (EPS plates). This was glued with PUR adhesive glue on the vapour barrier. The first layer, self-adhesive sheeting, was assembled on the EPS-thermal insulation. The second layer, slated bituminous torchable sheeting, had to be torched on the whole area of the first layer. On the second day, the roofers covered the second half of the model with PVC plastic sheeting. Here the vapour barrier was laid loosely and the details connected with Butyl adhesive tape. The thermal insulation was also laid loosely, the waterproofing mechanically fixed, the seams welded together with hot air. On the last day the voluntary tasks were carried out, hereby, a half ball made of EPS was built in on each area with the according material. Due to shortage of time, many roofers worked up a sweat at the end. For the compulsory task in the area of metal roofing, a mono pitch roof model with aluminium metal roofing had to be covered. For this, the mounting of a guttering system out of a gutter, head part, gutter connection was also applicable. For laying the roof covering, abutments had to be carried out on the roof outlets and chimneys. Outlets for ventilation had to be made by hollowing out and filling with mastix. For metal roofing, the attic must be carried out by the highest point. This work was divided over two days. On the third day, the participants could for example, carry out decorating roof activities, arches with numerous segments or artistic metal sheeting work. 6 IFD General Assembly On Saturday, the general assembly with the business report of the Secretary General, reports from the commissions and decisions regarding finance and statutes took place. Afterwards, the new partner members of the IFD introduced themselves. These were the companies ISOVER Saint-Gobain G+H, CREATON, PCE Pittsburgh Corning Europe and P.F. Freund. Mr. Koch laid out information for the company b/s/t. He himself had to leave Prague already on Friday. The new members each received a membership certificate from the IFD-President. Switzerland applied for hosting and carrying out of the Congress and World Championship in Switzerland was fixed as host for the Congress The director of the Russian Federation NRU, Elena Pakhutko, extended the invitation to the IFD-Congress 2009 in St. Petersburg. Penrose, in which he addressed the happenings of the highlights and themes of the congress and the world championship. He emphasised, that the decision from last year for an independent General Secretariat, was definitely an important and correct decision. Concluding, the IFD-President Gordon C. Penrose thanked the KPT-President Svarc, his members, as well as the organisers of EKU for the well organised congress.
