9 Course Staff and lecturers (course leader) has worked with environmental architecture, energy, and ecology for 30 years, as practicing architect, researcher, lecturer, and author of several books. Chris worked in Asia (Bhutan) for 10 years for international organisations as project coordinator and architect for schools and a hospital. He has also done Tibetological research and translations. He was Director of the UIA Work Program The Road from Rio - Sustainable Development of the Built Environment from and Project Leader, NABU, Norwegian Architects for Sustainable Development, ( ). Guest Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture ( ) and at St Johns University, Minnesota, USA (2009). Chris currently works as architect and international consultant in the GAIA network, which specializes in sustainable architecture, as well as senior adviser at the Ideas Bank Foundation, Oslo. is a senior researcher at the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), University of Oslo. Her PhD study in anthropology centred on the social impact of electrification in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She holds a Master in Power Engineering and has been employed in the Norwegian electricity sector. Currently, she is involved in two research projects; one on sustainable electricity use in Norway, and the other on solar PV mini-systems and transfer of knowledge from India to Kenya (Solar Transitions). She has also been involved in work for the World Bank. John Hille was educated in earth sciences, economics, and humanities. He currently divides his time between a position as Senior Advisor at the Ideas Bank Foundation and freelance writing and research. He has been interested in sustainable energy issues since the 1980s, coordinated courses on the subject at the CDE during the early 1990s and has since been a regular lecturer at the ISS. He has recently advised several Norwegian cities and communities on climate and energy planning, and been an advisor to the Government Commission on Low Emissions. Harold Wilhite is a social anthropologist and an Associate Professor at the Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo (SUM). Here he leads the research topic entitled Consumption, energy and social change and is former Director of the Master s program. Wilhite s main research interests have been associated with the theory and policy of sustainable consumption. At the heart of this research has been how public policy, technology and the sociocultural factors are implicated in changing consumption, both in the North and the South. He has recently completed a 4-year study of the role of consumption in everyday life in India. 9
10 Aage Stangeland is a Dr. scient. in material technology and worked formerly as an adviser (with particular focus on CO2 storage) in the energy section of at Bellona - one of Norway s leading environmental NGOs, with a mixture of activism and cooperation and broad experience both within Norway and as regards the former Soviet Union, oil nuclear, EU environmental policy, etc. Aage is now working as Special Advisor for The Research Council of Norway. Ashok Sarkar leads the strategic efforts for scaling up energy efficiency operations in the World Bank and has over 18 years of experience in 30+ countries of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Prior to joining the World Bank, he had worked in the areas of sustainable energy and climate change in the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines; in the US Agency for International Development -India; at Resource Management Associates, Inc., a private sector international energy consulting firm based in Madison, Wisconsin; and at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, a power engineering company based in India. Jørgen Stig Nørgård (Jorgen Stig Norgard), born in 1933 in Denmark. He joined rather late the academic world after working as a farmer and mechanic. He has a MSc and PhD from Technical University of Denmark, DTU and has worked there since 1970 as associate professor, investigating and teaching how to achieve environmental sustainability through changes in technology, economics, life styles, etc, with focus on energy savings. He has written numerous papers, articles, and books, given lectures and seminars all over the world, and been advisor for UN, governments, and NGOs. He is now an emeritus ass. professor at DTU. Monica Guillen is a guest researcher at SUM and holds a PhD from the Department of Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath (UK). Her research is transdisciplinary within the social sciences and draws on economics, anthropology, psychology, and sociology to study the relationship between consumption and wellbeing in income-poor and rich countries. She is currently working on a project on sustainable consumption and human needs in Catalunya (Spain). Sandy Halliday, a chartered engineer, has worked in building research, training, policy guidance and as project advisor for local and national government and private clients for over 25 years. Her degree in Engineering Design & Appropriate Technology focused on socially and environmentally responsible engineering. She initially worked as a research manager developing UK policy & disseminating information on passive design, resource efficient, clean technologies and benign processes, products & materials. She founded Gaia Research (1996) to develop sustainable solutions for the built environment. Sandy s work extends to research, policy guidance, brief development, community consultation and interdisciplinary education. 10
11 Margrit Kennedy from Germany is a wellknown author and lecturer on the topic of alternative money systems and ecology. Her standpoint is that radical changes are needed, both for ethical reasons and for global sustainability. Maren Olene Kloster (course coordinator) is a research assistant at Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), University of Oslo. She finished her Master thesis at SUM in December, where she was granted a scholarship from LEVE livelihoods in developing countries. In her Master s thesis she focused on Norway s development assistance for health. Her studies have been focused on environmental change, water, and development. Declan Kennedy, is an Irish Architect, Urban Planner, Mediator, and Permaculture Designer. He has been teaching and practicing urban design and landscape, renewable energy and agricultural planning, coupled with holistic strategies in Germany since 1972 and in intensive seminars - organized in many countries; from 1972 to 1990 Prof at the Architectural Department of the Technical University of Berlin; 1985 co-founder of eco-village Lebensgarten Steyerberg, Germany; 1995 Founding Chairman: Global Eco-Village Network (GEN). His preoccupation with positive energies and ecovillage design has led to his engagement in the Gaia University, a young university without walls, based on action-learning. Ane Evenstad (course coordinator) works as a research assistant at Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), University of Oslo. She finished her Master thesis in Latin American studies in September. In her Master s Thesis she focused on the effects of Migration from Guatemala to the US. Her studies and work have been focusing on REDD+, Norwegian Environmental Policy, Migration, Land use and Women. 11
