4 4 What is the Städelschule? The Städelschule dates back to a foundation of the Frankfurt merchant Johann Friedrich Städel in With his bequest he set up the Städelsches Kunstinstitut. A school for people interested in art and for talented young students allowing public access to his collection of art. His institute focused on the assessment of traditional and contemporary art as well as the development of entirely new practices. Over the years two different institutions developed: the Städelmuseum and the Städelschule. The Städelschule is an international academy; this applies to both teachers and students. More than 70% of the student body comes from foreign countries. The exhibition space Portikus has also added to this international reputation. Since 1987 Portikus has been part of the Städelschule. Artists from all over the world exhibit there and the students at the academy profit from this in a variety of ways. Over the years Portikus has developed into a leading centre for experimental art in Germany. At the same time, the art scene in Frankfurt/Main has been enriched by over 160 exhibitions. STUDIES OF FINE ART 1. SCHEDULE OF STUDIES The summer term starts on April 1 st and ends on September 30 th The winter term starts on October 1 st and ends on March 31 st The following courses have been compulsory declared by the council of the Städelschule: Art history, art theory, philosophy and a choice of technique courses. The studies take place in direct dialogue with the professors. The main emphasis is on personal studio work Basic Study: The semesters until the intermediate examination (which may be taken after the 2 nd, 3 rd or 4 th term) are completed in one class. For the intermediate examination students have to present personal works. This exam is decisive for the further admission. It can be repeated just once, but only by exam after the 2 nd and the 3 rd term Main Study: After having passed the intermediate examination the main study commences and lasts until the 10 th term. Change of Class: A change of class is possible when the professors concerned agree to it. To switch from architecture to fine art is only possible after special examination and provided all other requirements are fulfilled. Certificates and Confirmations for Fine Art: For Students who have completed their study with the full number of semesters a certificate on the full-degree study will be issued. Students wishing to leave prematurely may, upon request, receive a confirmation on the number of terms they have attended. No diploma, bachelor nor master will be given at the end of studies.

5 5 The title Meisterschüler / Meisterschülerin is a special honour. After having completed their full number of studies (min. 10 semesters) students may apply for this title and need to have the support of their class teacher. The title Meisterschüler is not a master degree. 2. APPLICATION Admission is only possible at winter term. By 15 th June the complete documents must have been submitted to the student s office (Duererstr. 10, Frankfurt am Main). The acceptance of the applications occurs from the 1 st of May. Artistic talent and a minimum of 18 years are preconditions. A committee decides on the admittance of the applicant after he has passed an examination. Good knowledge of the German and/or English language is necessary. Applying for film, fine arts, painting, and sculpture the following documents have to be presented: Application form-sheet stating the required class (download website) Curriculum vitae in tabular form Passport photograph Portfolio with a selection (maximum 20 pieces) of own works, any media whatsoever; possible on USB-stick The format of the portfolio and the works may not exceed size DIN A0 (840 x 1189 cms). Larger sizes will not be accepted. For Film and Video: Video-DVD (PAL) or Quicktime file (.mov) on USB stick. Not playable videos cannot be considered. Incomplete applications and applications via will not be accepted. Application documents, Portfolios and works of art are sent solely at the owner s risk. The Städelschule cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss. If an applicant has not been admitted, the portfolio and works of art must be collected at the Städelschule during official opening hours at the janitors office within 8 weeks after receipt of the written refusal. After this period the academy s obligation for safekeeping expires. It is also possible that a third party picks up your portfolio/documents with a suitable authority. Unfortunately we are not able to return the portfolios/application documents. The academy will not bear for the costs of carriage nor customs duty for application documents GUEST STUDY Applicants who wish to attend as guest students have to send their documents (portfolio, application form-sheet: download website, passport photograph, CV) to the Office of admission mentioning the professor of their choice. The application period for the summer semester is from December 1st until January 31st; for the winter semester from May 1st until June 30th. Admission is valid for one semester and is restricted to three semesters. A studio place at Städelschule cannot be guaranteed.

6 CHANGING ACADEMY Students from other art academies have to apply to the Städelschule as all other applicants for a full-time study; see Point 2, Application. 3. The focus of the curriculum is reflection on curating art and on art criticism as an intellectual and aesthetic challenge. The Master is internationally unique, defined by the close collaboration between the university, the art academy and the museums. During the program students can combine academic study and research with curatorial discourse and professional practice. The programme is formulated to respond to new developments that concern the future of architecture. Thus the programme is under constant revision so as to include new pedagogical, methodological, technological as much as other types of developments in the discipline. The Städelschule Architecture Class offers a two-year, full-time Master of Arts in Architecture programme. The first year involves introductory training exposing the students to a wide array of architectural problems, methodological design procedures and material and technical issues. After the successful completion of the first year, the students enter the second year in which they respectively focus on one of the four offered specialisations: Advanced Architectural Design Architecture and Performative Design Architecture and Aesthetic Practice Architecture and Urban Design

7 7 The second year with the chosen specialisation culminates with the students presenting the results of their research and experiments in an architectural thesis proposal. All teaching is in English. Each year the work is formulated with respect to a select theme. The theme sets out an architectural problem within a conceptual as well as a real context where the students are expected to develop their research design issues with respect to social, cultural and economic factors. Being part of one of the most prestigious art academies in the world the Architecture Class is supplied with exclusive contributions from world renowned artists and theorists as well as the vibrant life of the art studios in the Städelschule. Students at the Architecture Class profit from the teaching of the school s diverse and multi-facetted faculty and are in turn expected to develop a highly personalised approach to their work. Within this context the Architecture Class offers its students an intimate and vibrant setting for exploring contemporary architectural issues through personalised research and teaching. After successfully completing all the courses required and the Master thesis examination, the student will receive the degree Master of Arts in Architecture. Application schedule Application Deadlines: January 30 th, 2016 or April 15 th, 2016 Applicants must submit an application with the following material (in hard copy) to the Architecture class: Portfolio (hard copy, bound, no larger than A3 and maximum of 20 pages) A letter of motivation (500 words max.) stating your interest in architecture and the programme of SAC Curriculum Vitae (CV) Official copies (translations) of school transcripts Two letters of recommendation Application form To qualify for studying at the Architecture Class, you should have studied architecture for at least 4 years with a bachelor degree and have, in total, a minimum of 2 years work experience (including summer jobs, internships and part-time work). NOTE: All of our teaching is carried out in English. A certificate showing fluency in English (TOEFL, IELTS etc.) is not required by the Städelschule but may prove helpful with respect to the German authorities and the visa application. The Städelschule does not provide English language courses.
