1 Installing Microsoft Security Essentials on Hippotizer. 22 Feb 2011 v1.00 SV. Microsoft Security Essentials is an Anti- Virus product provided by Microsoft. As a free product for Windows XP systems we suggest it as the preferred antivirus product to protect Hippotizers from viruses and malware. Before you install it on your Hippotizer(s) you need to be aware of the following; 1- Depending on the specification of your Hippotizer there may be some effect on performance with the Hippotizer software. In most cases we see little or no effect in our tests but you may see different results depending on how you are using it. 2- Once installed it can be run all the time as long as you have disabled the Scheduled Scan. 3- Virus software needs to be updated frequently to be protected from the latest viruses/malware. It might be a good idea to run updates in between shows (after the show has finished) 4- DON T run a scan while the Hippotizer software is running. Running a scan whilst the Hippotizer software running will impact on the performance of the media playback. In order to install setup up Microsoft security essentials on a Hippotizer unit there are a number of steps you need to do. Installing, and updating Microsoft security essentials. Disabling automatic updates which is enabled during MSE install. Adding Green- hippo software to the firewall exceptions list. Disabling MSE from doing Scheduled scans. On a non- Hippotizer system, download Microsoft Security Essentials from; Once downloaded, copy it to the Hippotizer system. Run mseinstall.exe. Click Next.

2 Click I accept. Select I do not want to join the program at this time, and then click Next. Keep the option to enable the Windows Firewall and click Next. When prompted, click Install.

3 After has installed, click Finish. Let the software update to the latest virus definitions and run a virus scan. Whilst the system is being scanned, you need disable Automatic Updates in windows as Security Essentials re- enabled this during the install. To do this, follow these steps; In windows, open Control Panel (click Start Control Panel). Double click Automatic Updates to open it. In Automatic Updates select the option to Turn off Automatic Updates (as above) and then click OK to exit.

4 Also, now that windows firewall has been enabled you need to add exceptions for green- hippo software. To do this, follow these steps. In Control Panel open Windows Firewall. Click on the Exceptions tab. You should see programs currently with exceptions, to add Hippotizer to the list, click Add Program

5 When prompted, find Hippotizer3 Engine in the list and then click OK. Note: if Hippotizerv3 Engine is note listed, click the Browse button and browse to C:\hippotizerv3\bin\HFWManagedHost.exe and then click OK. Now repeating the same steps, you need to add ZooKeeper and DrHippo (for version and later users) to the exceptions list. Your exceptions list should look like the one above. Let Microsoft Security Essentials scan your system. If it finds any files with viruses take care not to delete any system files or media files i.e. files in the windows, hippotizerv3, or mediav3 folders. After the scan has finished you should disable the Scheduled scan so that it doesn t start when the Hippotizer software is running. To do this, open Microsoft Security Essentials, click on the Settings tab.

6 Now, uncheck Run a scheduled scan on my computer then click Save changes and exit from Microsoft Security Essentials configuration. The system is now ready to run the Hippotizer software, however you need to be aware that the antivirus software should be updated when the system comes back from a show/performance in order to keep up to date with protection from the latest viruses and malware. Also in most cases the windows firewall will not cause any problems with the operation of the software. In some installations when using DMX lighting fixtures, lighting desks etc there may be some problems with network communication. If you experience network problems it might be a good idea to disable the Firewall.
