The tour starts in Naples, which provides easy access to Salerno and Pompeii. Examine Roman influences in public health, sanitation and surgery at Pompeii and Rome. Review medieval medicine with visits to hospitals and pharmacies in Rome and Florence before considering the new importance of anatomy, one of the cornerstones of Renaissance art and science. Visit the first anatomical theatre in Padua and the famed botanical garden, and then to Venice, where the outbreak of the lack Death led to the birth of quarantine. to Salerno in the afternoon to visit the world s first medical school, which flourished in the 10th century and was a vital source of medical knowledge in Western Europe at the time. Return to Naples in the afternoon. Visit the Naples Archaeological Museum the following day with its fascinating collection of Roman surgical instruments excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Take a walking tour of Naples in the afternoon, visiting historical landmarks such as the Church of Gesu Nuovo, built by the Jesuits in 1601, its rich interior belied by a rather drab façade, and the ornate baroque Pharmacy of the Incurables, dating back to the 1700s. Arrive in Naples and check into your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure to settle in and enjoy the lovely hotel before having traditional Neapolitan pizza at a local restaurant in the evening. 3 The temple to Apollo in Pompeii Head north to Rome via Monte Cassino and visit the famed Abbey, founded in 529 by St enedict, which became one of the most important centres of medical knowledge in medieval times. Continue to Rome and check into your hotel. Spend the morning at St Peter s asilica and the Vatican Museum. In the afternoon visit the Via Appia, one of the original seven roads leading to Rome, lined by ruins and catacombs as Roman law forbade the burial of bodies within the city walls. Learn about Roman attitudes to death and burial, which shed light on Roman society of the time. Spend the following morning at the excellent and eclectic Museum of Zoology and Natural History, La Specola. Founded in 1771 to display publicly the large collection of natural curiosities such as fossils, animals, minerals and exotic plants acquired by the Medicis, it was the only scientific museum of its kind specifically created for the public to view until the early nineteenth century. It is known especially for its collections of wax anatomical models from the eighteenth century. There will also be time to visit the Casa Guidi, which was the home of poets Elizabeth and Robert rowning. Continue to the scented Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. It was established in 1221, when the Dominican monks from the adjacent asilica of Santa Maria Novella began growing herbs to make balms, salves and medicines for their infirmary. The pharmacy opened its doors to the public in the 17th century and it still sells traditional elixirs, along with skin-care products, oils and perfumes. After lunch visit the Museo Galileo, which has one of the world s major collection of scientific instruments from the Medici and Lorraine dynasties. Next morning take a tour of the Museo Storico Nazionale dell Arte Sanitaria (National Historical Museum of Health), located in the medieval Ospedale di Santo Spiriti. It contains a library and paintings and sculpture relating to medicine and medical history. In the afternoon, visit Isola Tiberina Tiber Island once the location of an ancient temple to Ascelpius, the Greek god of medicine and healing, and more recently the site of St artholomew s asilica and a Knight s Hospitallers hospital in the 1580s. Visit the temple of Asclepius, the Roman Forum, the Palantino and the Colosseum. Next morning drive to Florence, the centre of the Italian Renaissance. Take an introductory walking tour, seeing the Cathedral, the aptistery, Giotto s ell Tower, Signoria Square, Ponte Vecchio and Santa Croce Square. Continue to the Ospedale Santa Maria Nuovo, built by Folco Portinari, the father of Dante s eatrice, in It was originally a hostel for visiting pilgrims and travellers, became a hospice for lack Death victims and later served as an office where money could be exchanged and deposited and letters could be received; Michelangelo did his banking here. Visit the nearby Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), built in the first years of the 1400s as a home for orphans and abandoned children. It was the first institution of its kind in Europe and can be considered the first fully Renaissance building. Spend the afternoon at leisure. Drive to ologna and transfer to your hotel before visiting the University of ologna, the oldest continually operating university in the world, and its beautiful Anatomical Theatre, carved from spruce and elaborately decorated with carved sculptures. In the afternoon take a walking tour of ologna, visiting the Piazzo Maggiore, San Petronio church, the ancient market area and visit Santa Maria della Vita, a 13th century Roman Catholic church and 1 the most important example of aroque architecture in ologna. As much as for its intellectual tradition, ologna is famed for its food. Explore its rich culinary legacy the next morning during a culinary walking tour, finishing with a leisurely lunch and a free afternoon to explore or relax as you wish. Next morning drive to Padua to visit its lovely botanical gardens, dating back to 1545, and take a tour of the beautiful Renaissance Anatomical Theatre - the oldest in the world - at the historic Padua University Medical School. Take the train to Venice the following morning and take a vaporetta to the islands of San Servolo and San Lazzaro degli Armeni, where lepers and foreign visitors were isolated during outbreaks of the plague in the first example of quarantine in the world. San Servolo was also the site of a former military hospital, later used for the mentally ill, and the gardens on the island were used as a pharmacy. After lunch visit St. Mark s Square and asilica. Walk through the Dorsoduro district and visit Ca Rezzonico, the former home of Robert rowning, who died in Florence. Return to Padua in the early evening and later enjoy a farewell dinner. 7 Tour leader William ynum FRCP is Professor Emeritus of the History of Medicine at University College London and was head of the academic unit of the Wellcome Institute. A Yale graduate in medicine, he began his career in the history of medicine with a Cambridge PhD. ill s recent books include The History of Medicine: A very short introduction, and A Little History of Science. Helen ynum has a PhD in the History of Medicine from University College London, and lectured at the University of Liverpool before becoming a freelance historian of medicine and science.
