SELECT LIST OF RECENT WORKS ON THE HIS TOR Y OF THE LOW COUNTRIES PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH R.C. Van Caenegem, Guide to the Sources of Medieval History. Europe in the middle ages. Selected studies, II (Amsterdam: North Holland Publishing Company, 1978, 428 p., ISBN , f 115,-). A translation of the author's Encyclopedie van de geschiedenis der middeleeuwen (Ghent, 1962). A very useful volume which pays particular attention to Belgian and Dutch material. H. Van der Wee and E. Van Cauwenberghe, eds., Productivity of Land and Agricultural Innovation in the Low Countries ( ) (Leuven: University Press, 1978, 187 p., ISBN , BF 580). A fundamental contribution not only to the economic history of the Low Countries, but to the history of European agriculture in the late medieval and early modern period generally. The various contributions provide a considerable amount of data, mostly from the records, as to variations and development in agricultural productivity. The findings confirm the importance for the whole of Europe of the 'agricultural revolution' which took place in the Low Countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. L.T. Lehman, 'Use and Construction of Galleys in the Netherlands: Burgundian Galley-Gear; the Red and the Black: Technical Data on Galleys from Government 187
Papers', Mededelingen Nederlandse vereniging voor zeegeschiedenis, XXXVI (Bussum: 1978). Provides useful technical information on ship-building and emphasizes the fact that, although galleys are not usually associated with Dutch naval tradition, the Dutch in fact made use of this type of ship from the fourteenth century. R.W. Unger, Dutch Shipbuilding before Ships and Guilds. Aspects of economic history: the Low Countries, II (Assen: Van Gorcum, 1978, 216 p., ISBN , f 32,50). A thorough study of Dutch shipbuilding from 1400 to 1800, adding much to our information about the changes in ship design and the rules for ship-building as laid down by the shipcarpenters' guilds. G. Parker, Spain and The Netherlands, Ten Studies (London: Collins, 1979,288 p., ISBN , 6,50). A useful collection of the author's previously published writings, either locally or specifically concerned with Spanish policy in the Netherlands and the international context and significance of the Revolt of the Netherlands, with interesting forewords explaining the genesis of each article. K.W. Swart, William the Silent and the Revolt of the Netherlands (London: Historical Association, 1978,40 p., ISBN , 1,20). A re-assessment of Orange's role and motives, emphasizing the fundamentally personal nature of his quarrel with Spain and his crucial contribution to the organization of resistance in Holland and Zeeland in the early I 570s. R.W. Truman and A. Gordon Kinder, 'The Pursuit of Spanish Heretics in the Low Countries: the Activities of Alonso del Canto, ', Journal of Ecclesiastical History, XXX (London, 1979) Shows how lack of finance, and lack of support both from central and municipal authorities in the Netherlands, hampered the agents of Philip II in bringing Spanish heretics in north-west Europe to book. K.P.F. Moxey, 'Image Criticism in the Netherlands before the Iconoclasm of 1566', Nederlands archiefvoor kerkgeschiedenis, LVII (The Hague, 1977) Examines the content of image criticism among circles sympathetic to the reformation before 1566, emphasizing the role of the Chambers of rhetoric in spreading antiimage propaganda as well as the more direct efforts of the reformed writers. A.H. de Groot, The Ottoman Empire and the Dutch RepUblic. A History of the Earliest Diplomatic Relations, (Leiden: Brill, 1978, 417 p.; also thesis Leiden). 188
An able study in Levantine and general diplomatic history based upon Turkish and Dutch sources. A number of Turkish documents (with translations) are here published for the ftrst time. The subject is ftrmly placed within a broad religious and historical framework and provides much valuable information about the eastern Mediterranean world in the early seventeenth century. J.W. de Zeeuw, 'Peat and the Dutch Golden Age. The Historical Meaning of Energy Attainability', A.A. C. Bijdragen, XXI (Wageningen, 1978) An excellent study analysing the widespread use of peat as a fuel by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. It suggest a correlation between the Dutch Golden Age and the availability of this relatively cheap energy source at a time when wood was becoming increasingly scarce and expensive in the rest of western Europe. Moreover the Republic lost its dominant economic position as the more accessible peat deposits became exhausted. Jan de Vries, 'Barges and Capitalism. Passenger Transportation in the Dutch Economy, ',A.A.C. Bijdragen, XXI (1978) A brilliant study of the horse-drawn passenger barge, the network of passenger transportation and its economic and social signiftcance for the Netherlands. Its massive detail, sophisticated analysis, and a broad canvas which touches upon almost every aspect of Dutch economic development make this work a fundamental contribution to the economic history of the Netherlands. Centrum voor Maatschappij Geschiedenis, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, Mededelingen (Information Bulletin), I-III, V-VII ( ): I, 'Ongoing and future research'; II, P.W. Klein, 'Quantitative aspects of the Amsterdam rye-trade during the 17th century and the economic history of Europe'; III, P. Burke, 'Dutch popular culture in the seventeenth century; a reconnaissance'; V, J. van Herwaarden, 'The effects of social circumstances on the administration of justice: the example of enforced pilgrimages in certain towns of the Netherlands (14th-15th centuries)'; VI, W.P. Blockmans, 'Thomas More, Utopia and the aspirations of the early capitalist bourgeoisie'; VII, J.M.W. Binnenveld and M.J. van Lieburg, 'Psychiatric reform in the Netherlands in the nineteenth century'. H.G. Moors, et alii, eds., Population and Family in the Low Countries, II (Leiden, etc.,: Nijhoff Social Sciences Division, 1978,153 p., ISBN X, f 36,40). Eight contributions on various aspects of demographic research, mostly contemporary developments. Interesting chapters on nuptiality in the Netherlands in the nineteenth century and on Belgian immigration from 1890 onwards. Johan de Vries, The Netherlands Economy in the Twentieth Century: an Examination of the most Characteristic Features in the Period (Assen; Van Gorcum, 1978,135 p., ISBN X, f23,-). 189
Translation of 1973 book. The only economic history text on the period available in the English language. A.F. Manning, 'The Position of the Dutch government in London up to 1942',Journal of Contemporary history, XIII (London, 1978) An analysis of the Fareastern policy of the Dutch government in exile. Argues that the Dutch had an inflated idea of their international position and that their claim to recognition as an 'independent ally' and middle-ranking power was only partially accepted. L. de Jong, 'The 'Great game' of secret agents,' Encounter, LIV (London, 1980) An abbreviated version of the author's Englandspiel, Mededelingen van de Afdeling letterkunde van de Koninklijke akademie van wetenschappen, new series XLII, no. 1 (Amsterdam: Noord-Hollandsche Uitgevers Maatschappij, 1979, 28 p., ISBN , f 7,80). Argues convincingly that it was not due to treason, but to incompetence on the part of British intelligence officials that so many Dutch agents sent from England to the Netherlands during the Second World War immediately fell into German hands. J.S. Fishman, 'The Reconstruction of the Dutch Jewish Community and its Implications for the Rewriting of Contemporary Jewish History', Proceedings of the American Academy for Jewish Research, XLV (1978) Highlights the problems experienced by Jews in Dutch society after the Second World War. The Jewish community gradually overcame these difficulties, partly through the inspiration provided by the founding of Israel. J.S. Fishman, 'The Eucumenical Challenge of Jewish Survival; Pastor Kalma and postwar Dutch Society', Journal of Eucumenical Studies, XV (pittsburgh, 1978) A sketch of the post-war problems created by the 2000 or so Jewish orphans left behind by the war. A long battle was fought whether they should stay with their war-time foster-parents or be returned to sometimes widely dispersed members of their families. Pastor Kalma defended the right of the Jewish community to these children. J.S. Fishman, 'The Anneke Beekman Affair and the Dutch News Media', Jewish social Studies, XL (New York, 1978) A case study of the problem discussed in the previous article. The conflict between Anneke Beekman's foster-parents and a Jewish organization over her guardianship led to a public debate which is here analysed with emphasis on the relation between Jews and catholics. 190
John A. Coleman, The Evolution of Dutch Catholicism, (Berkeley-London: University of California Press, 1978, 338 p., ISBN , $ 20,-). A sociological study containing much historical material on the changes which have taken place in the Dutch Catholic Church and its role in society in recent decades. On the whole the author takes a positive view of the numerous developments since the second Vatican Council. C.B. Wels, 'The Foreign Relations of the Netherlands between 1813 and 1945', in H.F. van Panhuys et alii, eds., International Law in the Netherlands, I (Alphen aan den Rijn: Sijthoff and Noordhoff, 1978, ISBN , f. 70,-) A clear survey of Dutch foreign policy with the emphasis on treaties and negotiations. J.H. Leurdijk, ed., The Foreign Policy of the Netherlands (Alphen aan den Rijn: Sijthoff and Noordhoff, 1978, 356 p., ISBN , f. 88,40). Thirteen articles, most of them translated from the Dutch, dealing mainly with contemporary history since A few are strongly politicological; the final article is bibliographical. Ozanging Economy in Indonesia. A Selection of Statistical Source Material from the Early 19th Century up to 1940, edited by W.M.F. Mansfelt and P. Creutzberg, I - (The Hague: Nijhoff, ). A very useful source publication for the economic history of the former Dutch East Indies. Vol. II (1976) deals with public fmance ; vol. III (1977) with expenditure on fixed assets; vol. N (1978) with rice prices. 191
