2 REGULATIONS AND LEGAL PROVISIONS The regulation and its scope of validity The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has developed a standard in order to reduce the global energy consumption and, consequently, the CO2 emissions. The IEC defines the levels of efficiency and efficiency classes of asynchronous motors at 50 and 60 Hz at a power range of 0.75 kw to 375 kw and therefore replaces the different national regulations that have been in force up until now. It also determines which motors are affected globally and which exceptions apply. EU Regulation 640/2009 governs the application of the standard in all European Union countries. The EU regulations 640/2009 and 04/2014 establish the conditions for the conversion to new, energy-efficient technology. In 2011, IE2 already became the mandatory minimum efficiency level for motors from 0.75 kw to 375 kw. The second level entered into effect on Since this date, only motors in the energy efficient class IE3 that are intended for network operation in the power range from 7.5 kw to 375 kw may be operated within the European Economic Area. As part of the third level, this will apply for all motors in the power range from 0.75 kw to 375 kw from This is prescribed by law. 7 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS AT A GLANCE 1. Who is affected? From , only blowers equipped with IE3 motors will be allowed to be put on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). This regulation affects manufacturers as well as system providers and system operators. The direct export of blowers/side channel blowers with IE2 motors (or systems/machines in which these blowers/side channel blowers are installed) to countries outside of the EEA is still permitted. Details of the regulations in the individual example countries are given in the table on page Which units are affected? All blowers equipped with a three-phase, low-voltage motor with 50 or 60 Hz in the power range of 0.75 kw to 375 kw must be converted to IE3 in accordance with the legally stipulated deadlines. In specific, this affects the following device/device series: ND Low pressure blowers: D 060 (60 Hz) to D 092 and 2D 060 to 2D 08 S-LP Stainless steel low pressure blowers: S-LP 180/71 to S-LP 315/103 RD Medium pressure blowers: RD 6 to RD 94 S-MP Stainless steel medium pressure blowers: S-MP 375/27 to S-MP 710/70 HRD High pressure blowers: HRD 1/4T to HRD 7/23 RD F Conveying blowers: RD 4 F to RD 82 F SD Side channel blowers: no conversion to IE3 (see point 4) 3. Are blowers or side channel blowers with multi-voltage motors possible? Yes, multi-voltage motors are possible for blowers and side channel blowers with a power capacity of less than 0.75 kw. 4. Which units are NOT affected? Those not affected by the standard: Devices with motors < 0.75 kw and > 375 kw (in specific, this means: D 03 to D 060 (50 Hz), 2D 04 to 2D 052, RD 0 to RD 5, HRD 1/2T and HRD 1/3T, RD 14 F) Side channel blowers Motors that are fully integrated in a machine (e.g. pumps, blowers, compressors) and are practically impossible to inspect individually. (except UL devices with 60 Hz) Pole-changing devices Single-phase devices The following are considered as exceptions to the regulation: Devices that are intended for frequency converter operation except 50 and 60 Hz e.g. Elektror devices in the HRD FU/FUK series ATEX blowers 5. Which changes to the motors are required in addition to IE2? Improved metal quality More active material (in some cases, the outer motor dimensions change *) Optimised system for motor cooling Increased coil space factor through the use of more copper *) Please see the table on pages 4-6 for the devices with changed motor dimensions. 6. Does the ventilation-related data of the blower/side channel blowers change? Radial blowers: No! Side channel blowers: Limiting points may change with the same ventilation curve characteristics.
