Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults 97.5% of students felt the support of the SJU community because of the retreat program 94% felt a greater appreciation of their Catholic faith or religious tradition Each year approximately 20 students complete the process and became fully initiated For 2016, 19 students completed the process of R.C.I.A. RETREATS 9

11 UNIVERSITY MINISTRY: VINCENTIAN SERVICE Weekly Service Efforts In served over 6,790 hours at over 10 different sites 4 Graduate Assistants serve 20 hours weekly in offering these efforts By October, many of the projects boast waiting list of over 20 students Plunges Steady 25% increase to plunge applicants each year Offer over 135 students the opportunity to serve in these immersion experiences Plunges offered: Lourdes; Panama; Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA; New Salem, PA; Rendu Freshmen Plunge; Los Angeles, CA and North Carolina 11

12 UNIVERSITY MINISTRY: VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE TO ADVANCE LEADERSHIP (V.I.T.A.L.) Membership exceeds over 160 members across the Queens and Staten Island campus In 2014, we had our 12th graduating class and 350 graduates of the program More than 60% of VITAL students say VITAL has helped prepare them for career preparation to a large extent 12

13 UNIVERSITY MINISTRY: CATHOLIC SCHOLARS Leaders in the St. John s University faith community and will become leaven for their peers as they grow in their faith and spirituality during their college years. Leaders in the local church through their apostolate, offering an integration of their academic coursework and their foundation of faith. An example to our campus and our world of lived Catholic faith as the post resurrection disciples served as an example of Christ to others. The Catholic Scholars program looks towards the future of the Church and helps our students to find their place in it. 13

16 UNIVERSITY MINISTRY: SPECIAL PROGRAMMING AND EVENTS Growth in student organizations exceed 300 members of unique membership Habitat for Humanity In 2014, SJU Collegiate Chapter selected by Jimmy Carter project. Membership in chapter exceeds 60 students Catholic Student Community Facilitates annual Lock-In Retreat in STMC each spring. St. Vincent de Paul Society Inducted over 40 new members into the Society in 2014 Being a part of this group has encouraged me to participate in other aspects of campus ministry, including music ministry, liturgical ministry, and different service opportunities. 16

19 VINCENTIAN CENTER FOR CHURCH AND SOCIETY Vincentian Center for Church and Society (VCCS) Originated in 1994 at St. John s University Continues to: Animate university-wide consciousness of the Vincentian charism Encourage and support academic ventures, especially those related to social justice, Serve and collaborate with the greater church and community in the spirit of Ex Corde Ecclesiae 19

Griffin, C.M., Executive Director Christine Hammill-Cregan, JD, Associate Director Kimberly Hoppe-Hernandez, Administrative Asst. We have also had the assistance of a GA: Karolina Nicewicz 20

22 VINCENTIAN CENTER FOR CHURCH AND SOCIETY The VCCS supports the mission effort for and with our faculty: Vincentian Research Fellows Program The overall goal is to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue and research in the spirit of St. Vincent De Paul and mindful of Catholic teachings that seeks concrete and sustainable solutions to poverty. Faculty Mission Orientation (Adjunct and Full Time) The VCCS collaborates with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The program emphasizes how the founder s influence and tradition can inform contemporary curricula, pedagogy, research and service. Collaboration in various University offerings, such as World Aids Day, World Food Day, & Globe Programs. 22

23 VINCENTIAN CENTER FOR CHURCH AND SOCIETY The VCCS supports the mission within the local Church and community: Church Management The Center collaborates with professors from the Tobin College of Business to provide continuing education in church management for pastors and church personnel from the local dioceses as well as Management for Catholic School Principals. Acculturation of International Priests and Religious A five day, residential program taught by St. John s faculty and other specialists. St. John s Faculty Experts to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in NY 23

24 VINCENTIAN CENTER FOR CHURCH AND SOCIETY The Vincentian Center will continue its efforts on behalf of the University both within and without. In the coming year, that will include: Attention to the writings of Pope Francis, especially around mercy and family. Planning for Founder s Week which will deal with the theme of Vincentians in education. Celebrate the 200 th anniversary of the Vincentians coming to the USA (1816) and the 400 th anniversary of the foundation of the Vincentian community (1617). 24

28 UNIVERSITY MISSION Vincentian Mission Orientation (VMO) One day introductory Catholic & Vincentian training session for employees from all departments and across all disciplines Catholic and Vincentian components of the University Mission reviewed in light of the life and ministry of St. Vincent de Paul Mission Walking Tour highlighting some of the major statues, symbols and inscriptions that reflect our Catholic & Vincentian mission Panel presentations featuring St. John s employees who exemplify the Mission in their work and personal life 28

29 After the completion of this 16-month cohort experience, employees will have developed: UNIVERSITY MISSION Vincentian Mission Certificate (VMC) A broader understanding of the life and times, mission, values and spirituality of the founders of the Vincentian family, with a primary focus on St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac A deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, the contemporary Vincentian mission, particularly with regard to its application to SJU and our unique heritage, culture, and strategic vision 29

30 UNIVERSITY MISSION The ability to engage in discussions centered on the Catholic and Vincentian mission, particularly within the St. John s community of current students, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators, in addition to potential students and their families. An inclusive sense of identity with the Vincentian family and a commitment to promoting and living out the implications of that collective Vincentian mission in the 21 st century 30

31 UNIVERSITY MISSION VMC Service Impact in the Community St. John s employees engaged in organized service at sites typically served by St. John s students, including Bread & Life Soup Kitchen, Ronald McDonald House (LI), St. Nick s Men s Shelter, and the Midnight Run. 31

32 UNIVERSITY MISSION Vincentian Heritage Tour to Germantown, PA Employees connect first-hand with a variety of organizations that provide service, in the Vincentian tradition, to the poor and disenfranchised. Reflection allows employees to focus on the challenges & successes learned in Germantown and how that translates to service in New York City and beyond. 32

33 Vincentian Mission Institute (VMI) UNIVERSITY MISSION Collaborative, 18-month program that brings together faculty and administrators from SJU, DePaul University & Niagara University (approx. 10 participants from each) Aims to educate and engage lay administrators & faculty in the history and future of Catholic and Vincentian higher education, social teaching and ministry 33

34 Vincentian Mission Institute (VMI) Education and engagement is achieved through collaborative online coursework, academic analysis of Catholic & Vincentian identities at each institution, and regularly scheduled video conferencing between all three universities. UNIVERSITY MISSION The VMI Program aims to build thoughtful discussion around the relevant current question: What does it mean to be a Catholic, Vincentian university in the 21 st century? 34

35 University Service Day (USD) Began in September 2002: 123 volunteers from Queens campus only UNIVERSITY MISSION Continued to grow through September 2015: Over 2,200 volunteers across all NY campuses and Rome, Paris & Seville Over 150 sites served by St. John s volunteers, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni 35

36 University Service Day (USD) Held annually on the Saturday nearest the Feast Day for St. Vincent de Paul (Sept. 27) UNIVERSITY MISSION Engages students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni in a variety of service projects Service engagement in communities locally, nationally and globally...by serving the hungry in soup kitchens, visiting residents at nursing homes, engaging in interactive programs with disadvantaged children, cleaning & landscaping area parks, painting rooms in nearby schools and community centers, and providing assistance with many other projects. 36

39 VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ACTION To more visibly embed St. John s mission into the educational experience of its students, the University established the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA). The Institute provides an organizational focus for a variety of programs where faculty and students can explore issues of poverty and social injustice. The Vincentian Institute is comprised of four interrelated units: - Academic Service-Learning - Community Partnerships - Faculty Research Consortium - Ozanam Scholars Program All programs are guided by the themes of: homelessness, hunger, healthcare and education. 39

40 VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ACTION Academic Service-Learning (AS-L): AS-L is a site-based program that involves students in required community service as a means of understanding course concepts. In addition, student reflections examine issues pertaining to social justice and civic responsibility. Service engagement is offered in all five New York City boroughs at over 100 sites and in four international countries. 40

41 VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ACTION Community Partnerships The Institute has identified organizations which are considered strategic partnerships. These organizations offer sustainable and measurable opportunities for service and community-based research and are located in four NYC boroughs. Examples: - St. John s Bread and Life - Our Lady of Mount Carmel SI - Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School - Homes for the Homeless 41

42 VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ACTION Faculty Research Consortium (FRC) The FRC is a select group of interdisciplinary faculty members who have demonstrated teaching, research and scholarly expertise in areas related to community service, civic engagement and social responsibility. Guided by a Chair, the Consortium supports faculty research, recruits qualified University professors and develop research initiatives through the Institute s community partnerships. The FRC also reviews all academic and assessment guidelines for the units of the Institute. 42

43 VINCENTIAN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ACTION Ozanam Scholars Program: The Ozanam Scholars Program provides a platform for students to critically examine the systems that perpetuate poverty and take action to advance social justice globally. Program Themes: - Academic Scholarship - Vincentian Leadership - Global Citizenship Approximately 25 freshmen from the Queens and Staten Island campuses are selected each year. The program includes an annual, renewable scholarship of up to $10,
