Year of Mercy Guide All Saints Catholic Parish Growing in the Spirit

All Saints Catholic Parish, with the assistance of print ready materials on DynamicCatholic.com, would like to invite you to journey together as a community of faith in this Year of Mercy. About the Year of Mercy? Seeing the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis called for the Year of Mercy a special period, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, for the Catholic Church. It is a time for the Church across the world to take approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Pope Francis has asked us as individuals and as a Church to be a witness of mercy by reflecting on and practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy (Pope Francis Announcement of the Year of Mercy). Beginning December 8, 2015, the Holy Year of Mercy will focus on studying and reflecting on mercy, receiving mercy, and being merciful towards others. To read more, visit the Vatican s official website for the Year of Mercy at Another helpful website is the Diocese of Madison at Mass to Open the Year of Mercy: A diocesan Mass celebrated by Bishop Morlino will be held at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 13 (the Third Sunday of Advent). All people in the diocese are invited. A reception will follow. Catholic Herald The December 3 issue of the Catholic Herald will have a special section regarding the Holy Year. Relevant articles by local writers will be included throughout the Year of Mercy.

01 Pray Pope Francis Year of Mercy prayer daily. POPE FRANCIS YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen From News.va

02 Go to confession Bishop Morlino has asked each parish with a resident pastor to offer confessions on most of the Tuesdays of Advent and Lent, along with an additional two hours throughout the week during the rest of the year. Please see below for more information. This Year of Mercy provides all of us an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance. If you haven t been to confession in some time, now is the time to come back and receive this sacramental grace. Many of us don t take the time to do this for ourselves or perhaps consider this an outdated practice that serves no current need. However, we need the grace of the Sacrament to live a life conformed to Christ. There is no sin too great for God to forgive and there is no embarrassment in confessing to a priest that you know. This is a great emphasis of the Holy Father and the Year of Mercy. All Saints Catholic Parish is offering many opportunities to for communal penance and private confession. Communal Penance December 9, 2015 All Saints Catholic School at 1:30pm (St. Michael Oratory) December 9, 2015 All Saints Religious Education Program at 3:30pm/6:30pm (All Saints Parish) Private Penance Weekends (regular schedule) Saturdays 3:45, Sundays 8:30 and 9:30 Tuesdays December 1, 8, 15, 22 from 6:30pm-8:30 (All Saints Parish) Thursday, December 24 from 8:30am-9:00am 03 Forgive or reach out to someone. Do you have a difficult relationship in your life? Share God s mercy with that person. Could you reach out to someone who has left the Church or to someone in the community at large?

04 Read a good Catholic book about mercy. Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis is a great place to start; he talks about mercy in 36 places! A Year of Mercy with Pope Francis: Daily Reflections by Pope Francis and Kevin Cotter 05 Pick one spiritual and one corporal work of mercy. The works of mercy are the practical ways we live out mercy. They are how we show loving kindness, compassion, and self-restraint to the people around us, both physically and spiritually. According to the Catechism, The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities (No. 2447). While the exact list has varied slightly throughout the history of the Church, there are 14 consistently recognized works of mercy. Don t try to do this all at once. Take one of each and focus on sharing mercy simply. Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Harbour the harbourless Visit the sick Ransom the captive Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Admonish sinners Bear wrongs patiently Forgive offenses willingly Comfort the afflicted Pray for the living and the dead

06 Sign up for the Best Advent Ever. What are you doing this year to prepare for Christmas? Shopping for presents? Wrapping gifts? Baking cookies? Decorating the tree? Do something life-changing rediscover God s mercy. This Advent, join us in Best Advent Ever, a free program from Dynamic Catholic. Based on Pope Francis call for the Year of Mercy and Dynamic Catholic s new book Beautiful Mercy, Best Advent Ever will help you rediscover God s great mercy and show that mercy to others. Each day participants will receive an inspirational with a short video, words of encouragement, or spiritual coaching from Matthew Kelly and other influential Catholic voices of our time. This program will transform your life, relationships, work, and ability to embrace and experience all of life. The program is free! All you have to do is sign up at BestAdventEver.com. Let s all rediscover God s incredible mercy as we prepare for Christmas. 07 Pray the Divine Mercy Novena. Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray the Chaplet beginning on Good Friday and ending on Holy Saturday. You can find this at

08 Take a pilgrimage. It doesn t have to be far. Simply find a shrine or other spiritual site near you and spend extra time in prayer. Here are some Wisconsin shrines. Holy Hill, Mary Help of Christians - Hubertus, WI Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe - La Crosse, WI Archdiocesan Marian Shrine - Milwaukee, WI La Salette Missionaries and Shrine - Twin Lakes, WI The National Shrine of Saint Joseph - DePere, WI The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help - New Franken The National Shrine of Saint Philomena - Briggsville The Dickeyville Grotto Dickeyville The Rudolph Grotto Shrine Rudolph Schoenstatt Shrine Freedom Holy Doors Each diocese has been asked by Pope Francis to dedicate Holy Doors at the local Cathedral and major shrines. Bishop Morlino has instructed this to be done at St. Patrick Church and Holy Redeemer Church (both part of Cathedral Parish) and the Schoenstatt Shrine. The goal is that people will make a pilgrimage to these places. There will be more information in the Catholic Herald.
