2 Why Upgrade Our Barricade Standard? Eliminate any confusion with fences, signs and their purpose in our operation by applying an easily recognizable system. Establish a more robust standard for barricades. Communicate, educate and perform periodic infield audits of the application of the standard in the workplace. Meet the National and International Standards for Signs and Symbols in the workplace (CAN/CSA-Z321-96) ( ISO ) 2

3 Underground Barricading Definition Barricade To limit, and or prevent, access to areas for the protection of all personnel. To block off or stop up with a barricade; to prevent access to by means of a barricade. The hazard is the driver that dictates the type and style of barricade. 3

4 Reg. 854 Mines and Mining Plants Excerpt Isolation of Hazardous Areas Where a worplace, travelway, manway or other area of an underground mine is under repair or where there is a danger or hazard to a worker, (a) The workplace, travelway, manway or other area shall be closed by barricades, fencing or other suitable means; and (b) warning signs shall be posted indicating that it is under repair or indicating the nature of the danger or hazard. 4

15 Barricade A-B-C s There are three types of barricades used at Kidd Mine: A, B and C A Type Barricades are NON-ENTRY isolation barricades used to protect employees from immediate risk by preventing entry to a hazard such as open hole conditions or dangerous ground conditions that may be undetectable that will endanger life with no warning. Any entry beyond an A type barricade requires an Entry Permission Form (KMN-08-MG-FRM-07011) 15

20 B Type Barricades B Type Barricades are restrictive warning barricades. B Type Barricades are to be used to isolate an area that has a known detectable hazard that is visible or is a potential hazard. Work can be conducted beyond this fence by workers who are trained, competent and authorized by a Supervisor to perform the work. This is a RESTRICTED ENTRY barricade 20

23 C Type Barricades C Type Barricades are cautionary notification barricades and are to be used in an area that has a recognizable hazard and provides an impediment that permits easy access to the area for various activities. Work can be conducted beyond this fence by trained workers who understand the identified hazard and how the work being conducted interacts with the hazard. The C Type Barricade LIMITS ENTRY to the area that has the known hazard. 23

30 Summary Points to Consider What important health and safety messages need to be conveyed to employees and workplace visitors? Are the use of safety signs and colors consistent and effective in drawing attention to hazards? Are signs posted in the best possible location and within an appropriate distance from hazards? Are signs, fencing and installation aids readily available to employees? What is the general condition of existing signs? Are they legible? Do your signs meet legal requirements? Are the current standards for signage (CSA)-(ISO) being met? Are employees trained to understand and comply with workplace signs and colors? Is compliance audited in-field? 30
