Immigration Begins Between 1700 and 1820, one million three hundred forty two thousand people immigrated to the United States. From 1820 to 1860, between five million and seven million people immigrated to the United States.

IMMIGRATION BEGINS Years Immigration 110, , , , million Immigration was not a major factor in population growth in the U.S. before Between 1820 and 1860 world events forced thousands to seek shelter in the United States.

Percentage of Immigration to the United States The German and Irish made up the majority of the Immigrants to the U.S. in Germany 30.5% Ireland 38.6%

Irish Immigrants

This is a graph about the different destinations of the Irish immigrants

Irish immigrants Many men and women immigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in the mid 1800 s. Most of the Irish immigrants were Catholic, after being mistreated in their home land, which was now ruled by the fierce Great Brittan Irish Catholics could not vote, hold office, own land, or go to school.. By 1855 an estimated 1.5 million Irish had left their country. The majority fled to the United States. When the Irish immigrants arrived in U.S., they were unwanted and considered lazy alcoholics.

Irish Suffering In 1845 a deadly disease attacked Ireland s main food crop, the potato. This caused a severe famine, which is a food shortage. The Irish potato famine killed 1 million Irish and forced many to flee. Experts, at the time, guessed what made the potatoes rotten and uneatable was the smoke from the locomotives. Observers claimed that there were children crying and looking like skeletons with nothing but skin and bone, after being starved for an unbearable amount of time. The Irish were forced to bury the dead under only inches of soil. At the time of the deadly famine, Ireland was ruled by Great Britain The Irish begged the Queen of Great Britain to give them aid and stop their suffering, but the British saw it as just a way to get rid of the filthy peasants. Friends of the Royal family in England were rewarded land in Ireland even if somebody was living there, they were to become their workers. Many Irish boarded ships taking timber to the U.S. and Canada. The owners of the ships sold tickets for a small fee and the land lords of the starving peasants would often chip in money to just get rid of them. In ,000 (or twenty percent) of the Irish immigrants perished while still at sea on there way to America. It was reported that sharks would follow the ships because of dead bodies being thrown overboard frequently.

German Immigrants

German Immigration Many German men and women immigrated to the U.S. in this time frame Many of the Germans immigrated to the U.S. after an unsuccessful revolution against their government in The German people had lost faith in there government to resolve their economic troubles. Over the next ten years approximately one million Germans immigrated, mostly to the cities of Chicago and New York. The Germans did not leave there culture behind though, they expressed their homeland s culture through music and bands

German inventions When the Germans immigrated they brought their great inventing skills and their inventions with them. The Germans are famous for their brilliant inventing skills. They have changed world with inventions such as: The telephone, The 3 D Mars camera, The Airbag, The Automobile, The Computer, The Helicopter, The Jet engine, The MP3 format, Nuclear Fission (the act of splitting Adams,) The Radio controlled watch, The Record player, Social legislation, The television, The Theory of Relativity, X Ray technology, and many, many more famous inventions.

The Uninvited Native born Americans became hostile toward the unwanted and uninvited immigrants, because the Americans felt like the immigrants were taking their jobs for less pay. There for the immigrants were some what poverty stricken, with not getting fair pay and being taken advantage of by some employers.

The Melting Pot After this overwhelming wave of immigration the United States was nicknamed the melting pot. This came from all the different immigrants living in the U.S. and their cultures and heritage meshing in to the new American culture.
