1 May 2015 information magazine for partners EXBIO Praha, a.s. Our Mission EXBIO Praha strives to exceed the most demanding customer expectations in the field of analytical cytometry by providing a comprehensive portfolio of high quality products and services at affordable prices. Discover EXBIO Milestones We are a manufacturing company with strong monoclonal antibody experience, focused on design, development and distribution of flow cytometry products for both in vitro diagnostic and research use. In this special edition of our bulletin we would like to introduce you with a breaf overwiew of our history. It all began at the end of 70 s in former Czechoslovakia, when researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Prague gained great experiences with construction of monoclonal antibodies. The hybridoma technology there quickly reached high quality. The antibody TU 01, prepared in the spring of 1980, was one of the first reagents in the world specifically recognizing alpha-tubulin in cytoskeletal structures, and the number of developed and characterized unique monoclonal antibodies continuously increased. The management of the Institute was aware not only of scientific, diagnostic and therapeutic impact of the developed antibodies, but also appreciated their economic potential. As a result, a Technology unit was established to develop and produce monoclonal antibodies to meet the demands of national industry. In 1990, soon after the collaps of the communist system, this Technology unit, including hybridoma cell lines, was transformed into an independent company EXBIO. In 1994, EXBIO successfully privatized the former biotechnolgy plant for manufacture of vaccines in Olomouc, but later, with the beginning of 1999, these two divisions were transformed into independent companies. Since that EXBIO Praha (the former Prague division) focused solely on the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies. The mission became to exceed the most demanding customer expectations in the field of analytical cytometry by providing a comprehensive portfolio of high quality products and services at affordable prices. Significant increase in manufacture and sales allowed the investment in building up a brand new facility (800 m 2 ) with its own animal house, cryo preservation site and biological and biochemical laboratories, which was opened in In September 2010 we experienced another great milestone in the history of our company. We opened the Research and Technology Centre EXBIO (2 200 m 2 ), co funded by European regional development fund (ERDF) under call of Czech Ministry of Industry Potential. Participation in various research grants enabled us to broadly expand our research activities focused on development of new products, which would better reflect the demands of our customers. In late September 2014 we opened new EXBIO Manufacturing Centre (1 100 m 2 ). Construction of these facilities and the purchase of new technologies were forced by the ever growing demand for the company s products from around the world. Building on the style and functionality of the current installations, the new manufacturing facility was designed to enable production in compliance with international standards. Funding from the EU Structural Funds under the Operational Programme Enterprise and Innovation under the Innovation Programme helped the company to invest in the new facilities and technologies. This high tech workplace has generated new highly specialised job positions, and we expect roughly a tenfold increase in production capacity. We realize every day that our achievements would have not been possible without continuous support of our customers and we would like to thank to all of you. 1
2 HOT Topics Newly Added s With respect to our customers needs we are continuously searching fo valuable hybridomas to supplement our portfolio with high quality antibody clones, and we are also developing our own ones. Here we bring a table of clones that have been added to our portfolio since last issue. As your needs and requirements are of high importance for us, we are grateful for your feedback what other important clones you would like to see in our portfolio. The Ki 67 antigen is essential for cell proliferation and its expression is restricted to the cycling cells. It is detected in G1, S, G2 and M phase, whereas it is absent in cells which are in G0 phase and it is not associated with DNA repair processes. Ki 67 thus represents an important tool for detection of proliferating cells, which is of great importance in tumor diagnostics and is commonly used as a prognostic factor in cancer studies. Immunocytochemistry detection of Ki-67 in U2OS cell line (human osteosarcoma) using monoclonal antibody Ki-67 (green). Cell nuclei stained with DAPI (blue). Flow cytometry analysis of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with PHA. Surface staining of CD25 (clone MEM-181 APC) was followed by permeabilization and nuclear staining of Ki-67 (clone Ki-67 ). 2
