3 General Information -16,5 nautical miles from Piraeus -57 km coastline hectares - second largest island in the Saronic Gulf - population about about non-natives -pick of summer about people - divided into 5 administrative regions (Aegina, Kipseli, Vathi, Mesagros, Perdika) - 4 ports (Aegina, Souvala, Agia Marina, Perdika)

4 How to get there From the port of Piraeus there are daily departures of Ferry Boats and Flying Dolphins to Aegina. The Ferry Boats accept cars and the trip lasts for 1 h. and 15 min. By Flying Dolphins the trip lasts for 40 min. Except than the vessels to the main port of Aegina, there are also ships during the summer period to the port of Souvala and the port of Agia Marina

5 History From The different findings in the area of Kolona as well as other areas show that the first inhabitants in Aegina appeared in the second half of the 4th millennium b.c. ( b.c.). From 734to 459 b.c. Aegina could compete with big cities in Mikra Asia that were based on trade. Due to these comercial transactions,in 650 B.C. the people of Aegina made their own silver coins, Turtle or Drachma, the first Greek and European coin.

6 History When the crusaders took over Konstantinoupolis (1204), Aegina was given to the Venetians. In 1537 A.D. the Turks declared war against Venice and the leader of the Turkish fleet Barbarossa destroyed and burned Aegina. Only a few churches in Palia Chora managed to save. The first Turkish domination lasted from 1540 to 1687 A.D. In 1828 it became the first capital of Greece and Ioannis Kapodistrias was the first governor

7 The temple of Aphea is one of the preserved Doric temples, dating from the beginning of the 5 th B.C. century, built of local poros stone, and serving as a model for the construction of the Parthenon and other temples in Greece, Asia Minor, (end of the 6th B.C. century). At the foot of the hill lies the Archaeological Museum, which unique finds.

8 At the top of the hill of Kolona, there was the temple of Apollo. It was built around the 6th B.C. Century. The temple was of rectangular shape comprised by 11 pillars on the long side and 6 pillars on the short. Southern to the temple, Propylaia was found, along with 2 other smaller buildings. At the bottom of Kolona lies the Aegina s Archaeological Museum contains ancient remains and relics. It was founded in 1832 by Ioannis Kapodistrias. In the museum, there are various vessels, pottery, ceramics, alabaster, links, statues, signs, coins, guns and coppery vessels.

9 Museums Aegina Archaeological Museum housed in a structural built at the archaeological site of Kolona Aphaia Museum is on the grounds of the Temple of Aphaia and houses remnats of the Temple Historical and Folklore Museum of Aegina is housed in a neoclassical building at Spyrou Rodi The Christos Kapralos museum in Aegina is located in the NW side of the town, on the coastal road straight from the harbour

10 Kapodistrian buildings The Government House is located close to the Metropolis, in the centre of the city. It is a very important to the modern greek history building. Here was housed Greece s First Government by the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias

11 Kapodistrian buildings In the centre of Aegina there is the Markellos Tower was built around 1800 by Spyros Markellos a representative in the Greek Parliament. In Markellos Tower the first government was housed from 1816 until 1828 and for a short time period the fund of the Hellenic state was found there.

12 Kapodistrian buildings The Cathedral was also used as a parliament house in 1827 and in 1828 for the first Greek goverment. In the Cathedral, there are many historic relics, a marble icon screen, remarkable murals and icons. In 1830, after a donation made by a Swiss banker called Eunardios, the Eunardios School of Teaching was built next to the Cathedral which is a neoclassic building.

13 Kapodistrian buildings The Municipal Theatre of Aegina used as mutual teaching school. Nowadays it is used by the Municipal Theatre Company to regularly stage plays and for a variety of cultural events.

14 Kapodistrian buildings The Orphanage was initially built from I. Kapodistrias to house and teach children orphaned by 1821 War of Independence. It usually referred as a prison is currently under the purview of Ministry of Culture which was undertaken to restore it using European funds.

15 6 klm from the town of Aegina is the church and The Monastery of Saint Nektarios was built around by the bishop Pentapoleos Nektarios. Nektarios lived in the Monastery and died in In 1961 he was declared a Saint. The Monastery is on the road to Saint Marina and it's about 6 kilometers away from the town of Aegina. Close to the church is Virgin Mary Xrisoleontissa's Monastery which was built in the early 17th century. It has high walls and it looks more like a fort. It was built that way because the monks were afraid of the pirates.

16 Events Many events take place in Aegina during summer, such as religious events, traditional events etc. International music festivals, traditional and folk dancing festival, Theatre festival, MASTER beach volley Aegina - Cultural Summer - first capital of modern Greece June - July August the fistiki fest (pistachio festival) in September
