Play some warm up games. Go over grip of racket and rally using discovery method (no real instruction), just let students get to know the racket and bird. Lesson 2: Introductory Activities Activity/Tasks: Teaching Points Inclusion Strategies Review grip of badminton racket. (Give demo). Follow gym floor lines around perimeter while juggling the shuttle with racket. Racket grip-shake hands, V between thumb and forefinger. Development Underarm forehand: Underhand shotsstroke starts behind shoulder, wrist angled backwards, arm straight on contact. Contact in front of body, follow All students sitting in far corner of gym so they can all see. One by one, get racket and shuttle and begin running. Each student has a partner, may do a group of three if odd number. Time (in mins) min

3 -Grip -stroke components -problems and corrections Partner work- practice hitting and serving back and forth. May get students into middle again to go over some points they are struggling with. wrist angled backwards, arm straight on contact. Contact in front of body, follow through. Give demos of forehand defences and serves. Explain/go over difficulties- snap wrist for more power. Foot position- if right handed, left foot is forward and after contact with the shuttle, right foot steps forward. Review ready position. group of three if odd number. Those having trouble may hit against a wall. Group Work Hit and run drill-three teams of 6 on each side of the court; hit the shuttle to other side, follow shuttle and run to other side and sit down. Continue until everyone has had a turn. First team to finish wins. Max. 6 per side. Put kids into teams of 12, 6 per side min Review of Learning How can we get more power into our clears? What is the best footing? How do we hold the racket? Discuss and questions. 2 min. Lesson 3:

4 Introductory Activities Development Group Work Review of Learning Activity/Tasks: 5 slow laps around gym; find partner and begin to rally, reviewing clears and underarm forehand returns. Bring class together and go over backhand stroke. Practice alone hitting to target on wall first. Get into teams of 2 and practice rallying in groups of 4. Go over what did and did not work in the round robin and the forehand stroke. Teaching Points Remember grip and to turn sideways to hit the bird then return to ready position. Same grip as forehand-demo motion and then practice in partners. Go over underhand forearm serves. Each partner has their own part of the court; communication between partners is necessary for safety and efficiency. Point out which lines are out and that if the birdie lands in there is a point for the other team. Did everyone understand the serving and points system? Inclusion Time (in Strategies minutes) Everyone has a 5-10 partner, group of three if necessary. Switch partners after 5 minutes or so to allow for different abilities to play together. Same as above 5 Do a round robin, say every time the bird lands out of line that team either gets a point, or gets their serve back. Winning and losing are not important today, just getting experience playing different teams is. Did everyone enjoy switching up the teams they played? Lesson 4: Lesson 5:

5 Lesson 6: Lesson 7: Evaluation Guidelines: Are most children comprehending the skill? Who is having problems? How can I help them? Was it enjoyable and successful for most of the kids? Safety Issues: Explain we do not touch anyone with the racket. If I see anyone touching anyone with the racket they are out, no questions asked. Communication is vital. Students should communicate with partner if they are too close to another person in the class. Extension: Start with one partner, play music and rally back and forth. When music stops, STOP and switch partners and rally again once everyone has a partner (may have to go against wall if odd number). Resources:
