1 Dear student nurses! May 16, 2013 Welcome to study in the Degree Program in Nursing at Helsinki Metropolia UAS! The studies will start on Monday August 26 th, 2013 at Student tutors will be directing you to the correct classroom. The first three days are orientation days, which are arranged in collaboration with the student tutors. The schedule for the entire first semester will be ready and available for you once your Metropolia-passwords are in function. This usually takes a few days. Be prepared to have full schedules throughout the semester. Below is a list of books which you will need during the first academic year. Smeltzer, Bare, Cheever, Hinkle: Brunner and Suddhart s Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing. Lippincott. For the preclinical classes you will need a uniform and a pair of good shoes. There are several stores to choose from. There are also some stores which sell used uniforms at a cheaper prize. To find out where to get these, you might want to consult student tutors once the school begins.

4 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR A NEW STUDENT A H O T R E C O G N I T I O N O F P R I O R L E A R N I N G Students of Metropolia have an opportunity to benefit from AHOT-procedure (aikaisemmin hankitun osaamisen tunnustaminen/recognition of prior learning) according to their own work or study experience. Students who have applied to Higher Education Institutions can apply for recognition of their prior learning no matter where and how this knowledge has been acquired. The skills must meet the objectives of the learning outcomes of the degree programme. A student has an opportunity to make earlier learning visible and to get a decision on the recognition of these competences. In practice this means that if a certain study unit is accepted in AHOT-procedure, it isn t necessary to study it again. The AHOT-procedure will be explained in more detail during the orientation programme. However, if you wish to apply it, it may be recommendable to get prepared in advance by collecting any references, certificates or similar documents which could be used as evidence for prior learning. The AHOT-contact person in the DPN is Päivi Rimpioja, head of the programme, paivi.rimpioja@metropolia.fi. She will give you instructions on the AHOT procedure during the orientation days. S T U D E N T A C C O M M O D A T I O N Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is not able to offer any student accommodation. It is student s responsibility to find an accommodation from Helsinki metropolitan area for the period of their studies. Please note, finding suitable accommodation in Helsinki area can be challenging. Therefore, apply accommodation right away after receiving this invitation letter. You can either apply accommodation from HOAS or from the private market. FOUNDATION FOR STUDENT HOUSING IN THE HELSINKI REGION HOAS HOAS is a non-profit organization which rents accommodation for anyone undertaking full-time studies in a secondary level educational institution or university.

5 HOAS properties are divided into campus areas for different schools. Each campus area has several options for families, friends, and students applying alone. HOAS offers the housing according the student s university campus area or within good traffic connections to the university. HOAS accommodation consists of private room with a shared kitchen and bathroom. HOAS apartments are unfurnished. HOAS accommodates approximately students in Helsinki area. HOAS deals with a huge number of housing applications. Autumn is the busiest time of the year and HOAS is not able to arrange housing for all applicants. Therefore it is vital that you will submit application to HOAS as early as possible and if you will get an offer from HOAS it is recommended that you will accept it immediately. OTHER HOUSING POSSIBILITIES: PRIVATE MARKET On the online portal Lyyra Rentals ( ) you can search for housing in the private market and look for flat mates to share a rental apartment with. Lyyra service is free of charge and requires only a registration to the service. Forenom ( offers fully furnished flats for both short and long term needs. The rent of the flat depends on the size and location of the flat, the number of tenants sharing it and the length of the tenancy agreement. You can also join a facebook-group: Apartments for students in Helsinki Metropolitan Area ( which is a platform where you can inform about available rooms and look for housing. The organizations that started this group will not help people find an apartment/room, nor will they help the person who wants to let/sublet an apartment or a room find a tenant. Please note, that it might be difficult for students with no regular income to find accommodation from the private market. Be cautious in accepting a rental apartment from a private owner without seeing it though there have been scams in the market. TEMPORARILY ALTERNATIVE: HOSTELS There are a number of hostels in Helsinki capital region that offer temporarily accommodation. Rooms will be most often shared with other people however staying in hostel is cheaper compared to a stay in hotel. Remember to make a reservation for a hostel early enough since hostels tend to be quite full during peak times; summer/autumn/new Year.
