Chapter 5: Vigerslev Allé 5.1 Case Context and Existing Situation Case Study Area and Character Sections Placement and direction of photos see Appendix 1, where also house numbers and street names are shown. The street case includes a 1.48 km section of Vigerslev Allé from Saxtorphsvej in east to Sjælør Boulevard in west, see map below. The case study area is split into two character sections. Map of case study area. (North is up.) Character section 1 is 0.95 km long and Saxtorphsvej to Toftegårds Allé / Gammel Køge Landevej and includes the junction at Saxtorphsvej. Buildings are placed rather far from the carriageways due an old area reservation for widening the carriageways. The section is dominated by FL Smidth s industries and offices on the southern side and 3-5 floors housing from on the northern side. Section 1 has one traffic lane in each direction. The structure of the street network is finegrained on the northern side, but coarse-grained on the southern side. Section 2 is 0.53 km and includes the end-junctions at Toftegårds Allé and Sjælør Boulevard. The section is dominated by the big square Toftegårds Plads, 5 floors buildings from with shops in ground floor and flats in upper floors, but also a few relatively new office and housing buildings. There are two traffic lanes in each direction and the street network is average-grained. The case study area represent the statistical area for most of the performance indicators, whereas only conditions on Vigerslev Allé has been registered regarding built form, traffic control etc. Page 69
Character section 1 (VA#1). Character section 2 (VA#2) Location Appendix 2 shows the location of Vigerslev Allé and the five other street cases in the street network in the Municipality of Copenhagen. Vigerslev Allé starts in east at Enghavevej and ends 5 km later in west at Hvidovrevej. Originally, the idea was to continue traffic from the Holbæk Motorway on Vigerslev Allé as a major arterial street, but a more southern corridor was chosen. Toftegårds Allé is a prime shopping street (forms together with Valby Langgade a shopping area) in the district Valby. Gammel Køge Landevej is an old intercity road coming from the south. The other streets are mostly residential streets. Vigerslev Allé links together the districts Hvidovre, Vigerslev, Valby and Vesterbro, but is a lot of through-going traffic also uses the street. Train services at Valby st about 200 metres north of the street and about 1 km south of Vigerslev Allé. A new station will open in 2005 where the rail crosses Vigerslev Allé just 150 metres west of character section 1. Bus and rail network. Page 70
Bus line 16 (5) and 650S (6) run all the way on Vigerslev Allé with 266 trips on weekdays. Bus line 21 (6) also runs from Saxtorphsvej to Fengersvej on section 1 with 189 trips on weekdays. Bus line 100S (6) and 171E (3) run on section 2 from start to end with 296 trips on weekdays, whereas line 18 (9) only runs from Toftegårds Allé to Trekronergade with 255 trips on weekdays. Bus lines 39 (8), 121 (3), 133 (3) and 539P (6) also crosses Vigerslev Allé at Toftegårds Plads. The small number in brackets shows the number of trips in rush hours on weekdays in one direction. Valby is a district with many industrial companies that represent about 30 per cent of the jobs in the area. Most of the housing was in built in There are relatively many 3 rooms flats and not so many flat 1-2 rooms flats. Valby is not far from average regarding almost all other things compared to Copenhagen in general Built form Buildings Character section 1 2 Side of street (BS = Both Sides) N S BS N S BS Average height of roofline (m) Ratio of frontage to space between frontages Number of inactive buildings Percentage of building line that are inactive 1 36% 89% 65% 46% 36% 41% Open doorways per 100 m building line opening onto the public realm Closed doorways per 100 m building line (often to private staircases) Percentage of building line that are heavily illuminated at ground floor 2 14% 1% 7% 51% 38% 45% Historical buildings Building line is section length minus side streets. Inactive include both space between frontages and inactive buildings. 2 Owners often illuminate buildings in the windows or on walls. Map showing doorways, inactive and illuminated buildings in section 1. Character section 1: The building height varies between 1 to 8 floors or about 3 to 25 metres. Most buildings are 3-5 floors. The shadows on the aerial photos on page 74 give you an impression of heights of individual buildings. Cross sections including building floors and heights are also shown on page 74. The spacing of buildings is big on the south side of the street. Here there are 390 metres without buildings. The rest is side streets and buildings, i.e. giving a low ratio of frontage to space between frontages. A pedestrian has the impression of a rather inactive street, especially due to the impression of the south side of the street. The sunny north side appear more active due to more Page 71
doorways, illumination and welcoming architecture. Location of inactive buildings and doorways opening to the public realm, but also doorways not opening to the public realm, is shown on the map. The old school seems to be of historical importance, see photo below. Buildings are a mix of many types of architecture from Maintenance of buildings is good. The street section has a low level of transparency. Old school across Ramsingvej (VA#3). Inactive withdrawn south side (VA#4). People space Mogens Fog Plads (VA#5). People space in the east of section 1 (VA#6). Character section 2: The building height varies between 1 to 6 floors or about 4 to 21 metres. Five floors buildings from around 1920 with shops in ground floor and flat in upper floors dominate the section. However, there are also some 2-6 floors office buildings. Spacing of buildings is relatively small on both sides of the street. A few buildings mainly in the east end are inactive, see map next page. The level of activity is almost the same on both side of the street, but area close to Toftegårds Plads is more active than the east end of the section. There are no historical buildings. The maintenance of buildings appears good except the low buildings in the northeast part. Architecture differs to a great extent with typical 1920 architecture as dominant and industrial like office and housing buildings from The level of transparency is generally high in west and low in east. Page 72
Map showing doorways, inactive and illuminated buildings in section 2. Playground at Trekronergade (VA#7). Less active east end (VA#8). Toftegårds Plads south is being changed (VA#9). Toftegårds Plads north is beautiful (VA#10). Page 73

The street width between the edges of the footways, i.e. the formal public space, is about 35 metres on the entire length of section 1 and 2. However, the many people spaces and withdrawn buildings give the street user an impression of major variations, where it almost is like entering square after square. The distance between opposing building lines varies from 34 to 216 metres due to this. Page 74
