1 SCOTTISH YOUTH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION LIST OF RECOGNISED FIRST AID SUPPLIERS
2 SFA Medical Committee: Criteria for validation of Sports First Aid courses Background: SFA Club Licensing includes the requirement that clubs have at least 1 person on the touchline with all teams who has Sports First Aid training, where a Chartered Physiotherapist is not present. To date there has been a variable standard of qualifications, which have been put forward by member clubs to comply with this requirement. The Medical Committee was asked to suggest some criteria, which clubs would have to ensure, were met when arranging their provider. Criteria: Course taught by appropriately qualified individuals from an appropriate provider in a suitable venue further details can be obtained on discussion with John Maclean. Course duration should be approx 12 hours taught over 2 days or smaller sections provided the whole course is over no more than 5 weeks. Course accreditation to last no more than 3 years without an update/refresher session. Course covers suggested list of topics see appendix 1 Course is specifically designed as Sports First Aid and materially different from an existing First Aid course. Course teaching materials to include PowerPoint presentation or equivalent with additional written material/course handbook for participants to retain. Course to have appropriate examination procedure, which must include Basic life support/cpr and scenario, based assessment in real-life sporting situations. Course participants must be examined as individuals. Written examination may be added to the examination process but when not used it is important that the scenario examination covers multiple areas of the syllabus. Course to have external (or significant independent internal) validation and annual audit. The recommendation is that clubs would submit (via their chosen provider) the above information together with a copy of all course materials including timetable, content, examination process and a list of accredited tutors for accreditation by a sub-group of the SFA medical Committee, which would include the Chairman and medical members. Please note that this accreditation is not an official endorsement by the SFA and does not allow providers to claim such endorsement it is only an acceptance that the course meets the minimum standards for Club Licensing. The course should include scenario-based teaching of the major expected injury situations in sport. This also allows a degree of continuous assessment and the tutor to emphasise/expand on areas where course participants appear unclear and to ascertain which participants require additional practice re CPR skills.
