In most cases you can just follow the usual manuscript submission process, and in some cases we ve build easy-to-use tools to help you bring your research to life. Most data visualization tools rely on data files which you can upload as supplementary material with your paper. These are listed below, for other innovations please check out the website. 3 In-Article Data Visualization In-Article Data Visualization U3D Models 3D s When publishing your research online, you are no longer confined to static visuals. Explore our set of 3D viewers and interactive visualizations that will help you share insights with your readers. The 3D s include functionalities such as zoom, pan, rotate, full screen mode, change display mode and many more to help your readers explore and understand your work. Plot Visualizations When publishing your research online, you are no longer confined to static visuals. Explore our set of in-article data visualization tools that will help you share insights with your readers. These interactive viewers include functionalities such as zoom, configurable display options, full screen mode, and many more to explore the data underlying your article in detail. 3D for Radiological Data This viewer displays radiological data in an interactive 3D format next to the article. The reader can explore radiological data submitted by you that was collected from magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computerized tomography and more. 3D for Neuroimaging Data Let readers delve into analyzed neuroimaging data that supplements the article with this interactive viewer. It creates deeper insight into the research and, when relevant, readers can download the original data files. 3D for Molecular Models and Crystallographic Data Create interactive 3D molecular models and crystallographic data, related to molecules in the research, for the readers to explore with your article. 3D Models You can create interactive 3D models which will be presented next to the article where readers can explore them. Readers will also be able to download the 3D data files for detailed inspection or re-use. Network Powered by Cytoscape, this viewer visualizes complex networks relevant for your research directly within the online article. MATLAB Figure Allow your readers to explore your MATLAB figures via an interactive viewer. Readers can download the original data files from this application. Phylogenetic Trees Create an interactive visualization of phylogenetic tree data next to your article. Readers can change the layout, search within the tree, view bootstrap values and export the data, to deepen their understanding of the information presented. Plot Show the plot and share the data. plots provide easy access to the underlying data uploaded as a.csv file. Let readers switch between plot and table view, download data or hover over data points to see the value. Map Let your readers explore annotated geospatial information on an interactive (Google) map. You can enable this by including a KML or KMZ file with your article submission to selected journals. 3D Radiological Data Virtual Microscope The award winning Virtual Microscope lets your readers explore relevant high resolution microscopic images that you submit with your article. 4 Multimedia The article in context Multimedia Add another dimension to your article. Talk about your article in five minutes using AudioSlides and include other multimedia features to help explain and promote your work! AudioSlides AudioSlides are short, five-minute presentations in which you can explain your paper in your own words. Using the authoring tool, upload slides and record the audio to present your research story and share it on your websites and social media. Featured Author Videos Available for selected journals, this application enables readers to watch or download a short video of the article's author(s) explaining their research. Context & Reference Material Help your readers understand your work and place it in the right context, by giving them easy access to reference information and data while reading your article. To connect your article, just add the appropriate identifiers, keywords, or accession numbers and we ll do the rest. Antibody Data This application references information about the antibodies featured in an article, linking to the NIF Antibody Registry. Arabidopsis Genenome If you include Arabidopsis loci in the correct format, our Arabidopsis Genome will automatically display the genome, along with links to additional information about the relevant Arabidopsis loci in the TAIR database. AudioSlides Editorial Podcasts This application enables readers to listen to a podcast of the journal editor interviewing the author(s) about their research paper. Featured Multimedia for this Article This application enables the placement of multimedia elements that are not part of the article itself alongside an article on ScienceDirect. Author Video Brain Atlas Brain Atlas For articles in select neuroscience journals, Brain Atlas identifies all neuro-anatomical structures and displays their 2D and 3D images. Each structure in the paper is automatically indexed to map onto a unified neuroanatomical nomenclature. The recognized structures are displayed next to the article on ScienceDirect. Chemical Compound This viewer presents the reader with structure diagrams for the key chemical compounds featured in the article. This application links out to Reaxys for further information on the compounds. Energy Terms & Definitions Helper This application helps readers to better understand the article by presenting definitions of terms from the Encyclopedia of Energy. Get you and your research noticed! Editorial Podcasts More than one million academic journal articles are published every year and Elsevier publishes more than 2,000 new book titles annually. Both these figures are rising. So it s increasingly important for you to find ways to make your research stand out. While there s a lot publishers and editors can do to help, as the author you are often best placed to explain why your findings are important or novel. The innovations featured in this brochure will help you present your work in a powerful and clear way to help your readers get the most out of your publication. Chemical Compound Bringing Data to Life: We are collaborating with many data repositories to link articles with primary data. We have taken this program to the next level with a number of data repositories, by building applications that pull in (meta)data from the data repositories and visualizing it alongside the article online. This enables researchers to explore the data easily, without interrupting their reading flow. 6 Content Innovation Content Innovation 7

5 The article in context Computer Code Pathways Pathways Selected article that has a pathway is processed using MedScan for proteins, genes, chemical compounds, etc. and converted into pathway diagrams based on their relationships. The application displays these interactive pathways next to the article on ScienceDirect. JEL-Code Article Recommender This application recommends readers relevant articles on ScienceDirect based on JEL (Journal of Economic Literature) Classification codes provided by the article's author(s). Lipid Structures This application displays additional information about the lipids referred to in an article, including their structure and other key information from the LIPID MAPS website. Gene Expression Omnibus Linked Data This application presents readers with additional information on Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) entities tagged by the article's author(s), and links out to the full record at GEO. Genome Readers can explore NCBI data on author-tagged genes through an interactive genetic sequence viewer that supports flipping strands, zooming to a sequence, selecting a specific position and more. Glossary This application displays an author-provided Glossary section as a dictionary next to the article, to help readers understand the article. Protein Using a 3D interactive visualization tool that works with Protein Data Bank data, this application enables readers to explore the structures of authortagged proteins. PubChem Chemical Compound This application presents readers with additional information on chemical compounds featured in the article by displaying records from the NCBI PubChem database. Transportation Resources Readers are able to search for relevant information in four important transportation databases (RiP, RNS, TRIP, USDOT) and on ScienceDirect using this tool, directly next to the article. R Code Computer Code Discover our solutions to include computer code and scripts with your article. By including computational elements, you are helping your readers to re-use your work and reproduce findings. Inline Supplementary Computer Code Elsevier is piloting an approach to improving the presentation of Inline Supplementary Material (ISM). Authors can indicate where in the text their supplementary material is most relevant, and the material, including computer code, will be inserted at that point in the online article in an expandable box. R Code This application presents computer code in the R language, together with any relevant data files, for easy inspection alongside the article. 6 E-Learning Content Innovation for Reviewers Case Insights Available for selected journals, Case Insights consist of author-prepared multiple choice questions. These questions are text based and can be supplemented with images. Case Insights transform the traditional case report into an engaging learning and selfassessment experience designed to help improve physician decision-making and treatment outcomes. As a reviewer, you want to help authors present their research in the best possible way. By using the innovations presented in this brochure, authors are no longer limited to traditional text, figures and tables: they can include data visualizations, connect their article with other resources on the web, and use multimedia to present their work in new formats. To give just one example, graphs can be turned into interactive plots that include not only the visualization but also the underlying data. This means the information that is included in the article is much richer and has additional value to the reader and that also means it s relevant for you as a reviewer. Case Insights Authors may include Content Innovation features on their own initiative, following reviewers or editors suggestions, or because the editorial policies of the journal require it.
