1 REVISED September 10 Mount Wachusett Community College Gardner, Massachusetts COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE TITLE: CHC 101 Introduction to Complementary Healthcare DIVISION: Health Sciences DEPARTMENT: Complementary Healthcare CREDITS: 3.0 COURSE HOURS: 3 hours lecture/week; 45 hours lecture/semester PREREQUISITES: ENG 100, RDG 100 or placement INSTRUCTOR: OFFICE/PHONE EXT. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to the theories and practices of complementary healthcare. Wellness and disease are explored in terms of their relationships to lifestyle behaviors, responses to change and transition and consciousness (mindfulness or moment to moment awareness). There will also be an introduction to several complementary treatments that can be incorporated into one s lifestyle to improve and enhance health. Complementary Health Care practitioners will be guest speakers complementing the program with their expertise. TEACHING METHODOLOGY: Students will obtain skill in course materials through the following to encourage problem-solving and critical thinking skills: required readings

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory and will be taken at every class session. All students are expected to attend class on time and be prepared to participate in class discussions. Each absence will result in a 2 point deduction of your overall grade. Students will not be allowed greater than 2 absences. Students absent for a 3rd class will be asked to withdraw. COURSE OBJECTIVES: GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVE:

3 To introduce student to the research related to the growing field of Complementary Health Care and to provide opportunities for applying this information to one s relationship to health and life style behaviors. SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1.To study the history of Complementary Healthcare and modalities. 2.To examine the research related to the correlation among lifestyle behaviors, stress responses, consciousness, health and disease. 3.To develop a self care plan for exploring and integrating lifestyle patterns. 4.To explore and experience several modalities for improved health. 5.To distinguish between various types of therapeutic interventions. 6.To research and present in writing on therapeutic interventions and there use in health and medicine. 7.To research and present orally on a complementary modality.
