2 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines the history, principles, and evidence for the effectiveness and safety of multicultural healthcare across the globe. This includes conventional allopathic medicine practiced in the United States and alternative medicine practiced in the United States and around the world. In addition, students will study wellness, well-being, lifestyle and stress reduction to understand how Self-Care differs from Healthcare. A sociocultural framework is used to compare these healthcare systems and personal self-care models for diverse cultural beliefs, values, norms and language and for societal role that the economy, political laws, family life, religion, education and media that inform our choices in life, death, illness, wellness, lifestyle, self-care, and wellbeing. American allopathic biomedicine is the standard model of healthcare in the U.S. today using primarily drugs and surgery to cure disease. Alternative Medicine is defined as any healing practice not routinely taught to medical students. Alternative medicine has a variety of other names including complementary medicine, folk medicine, holistic medicine, mind/body medicine, natural medicine and most recently, integrative medicine and functional medicine. Each name carries a unique framework for healing disease and living well. We begin with healing in ancient Greece in 400 B.C that lead to Era I Medicine in 1518 when American biomedicine began to form. Next, in Era II medicine in the 1960 s, brought interest in alternative ways of healing and scientific research in mind/body medicine, self-care and wellness. Finally, in Era III in the 1980 s, NonLocal medicine emerged with evidence for distant healing and prayer. Among the many healing systems and practices to be explored are allopathic biomedicine, chiropractic, homeopathic, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, ayurveda, native American healing, flower essences, herbal healing, music therapy, light therapy, reiki, energy medicine, geomancy, massage, cranial sacral therapy, yoga, meditation, exercise and nutrition. Self-Care will be examined within the larger framework of Healthcare and personally explored using techniques of mind/body medicine both in and out of class with regard to wellness, wellbeing and lifestyle choice.
