6 1.- PRESENTATION Dear Student, This presentation of the Student Handbook enables us to get in contact for the first time at the beginning of this new academic year with the students of the Faculty of Business and Economics of Complutense University of Madrid. This handbook represents an essential tool for the whole of the university community as it provides exhaustive information about the study plans, departments, facilities and services which make it possible to develop the academic activity in the centre. We wish to provide the most favourable conditions for the development of the academic activity of the Faculty, performed by students as well as by teaching, research, administrative and services staff. This has a special meaning in a moment of transition like this, when the bachelor s degrees recently adapted to the European Higher Education Area the Bachelor s Degree in Economics, the Bachelor s Degree in Business Administration and the Bachelor s Dual Degree in Business Administration and Law are fully consolidated. As it is well known, the process of convergence with Europe not only implies a change in the structure of Higher Education, with the design of new undergraduate and postgraduate studies, but it also entails a methodological change which requires an effort both for professors and students which -we are sure- will lead to an improvement in our teaching quality. Moreover, our Faculty is undergoing diverse actions with the aim of improving our teaching quality, such as the consolidation of the groups which are completely taught in English groups E of the Bachelor s Degrees in Economics and Business Administration, the new Official Postgraduate Programmes, the implementation of the new platform MOODLE for virtual campus, as well as the Internships Office, which offers students the possibility of doing both national and international internships. 8 LOCATION, ACCESS AND TRANSPORT GETTING HERE Location Map Directions from Madrid (Puente de los Franceses): 1. At the M500 Carretera de Castilla take the first exit, signposted Salida Pozuelo Majadahonda, which is road M-503, also called Avenida Dos Castillas. 2. Take exit 4: Turn left at the first roundabout. There is an entrance to the Campus at 800 metres. Alternatively, you can keep going straight in the direction Pozuelo-Majadahonda and turn left at the following roundabout ( Carretera de Húmera a Pozuelo ). There is an entrance to the Campus signposted as Universidad de Somosaguas at 50 metres. Directions from N-VI (Carretera de La Coruña): 1. At km 10 take the exit Carretera de Castilla. 2. Keep going for approximately 1 kilometre and take the exit to the right following the indicators announcing Universidad de Somosaguas and also POZUELO-MAJADAHONDA. 3. Keep going for approximately 1 kilometre and at the first roundabout: Follow the indication CARABANCHEL-HÚMERA, there is an entry to the Campus at 800 metres. Alternatively, you can turn right in the roundabout, keeping the direction Pozuelo- Majadahonda, and turn left in the following roundabout ( Carretera de Húmera a Pozuelo ). There is an entrance to the Campus signposted as Universidad de Somosaguas at 50 metres. 3

(buses A, I and H) have stops in the Campus. By Light rail ( Tren ligero ) Light rail B1 has a stop in Somosaguas Campus. It is connected to the underground Colonia Jardín (line 10) and the train station of Aravaca. By Train: RENFE Cercanías train with stop in Aravaca Station, where it connects with the bus line B of the E.M.T. 4

11 3.- REGISTRATION INFORMATION REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE VERY IMPORTANT: All students must obtain an ESTUMAIL account to complete online registration ( Through ESTUMAIL account, students can access their academic record, receive notifications from the Students Secretariat as well as information of the Faculty. It is recommended that, before completing the online registration, all students consult the Faculty s webpage ( and where enrolment procedures, study plans, timetables, examination dates and information on courses are detailed. REGISTRATION DEADLINES New Students registration to Bachelor s Degrees. 1 st Round: July, nd Round: de October, New Students registration to Second Cycle degrees. 1 st Round: September, nd Round: October, 2011 Returning students Those students having completed all their courses in the exams of February and June 2011 will enrol during the period of 5-13 September, The rest of students will enrol during the period of 12 September - 5 October, Students accessing through partial validation of foreign studies These students will register in-person at the Students Secretariat on 9 and 10 September from 9 am to 1 pm. Students accessing through Academic Record Transfer and Change of University and/or a Degree Conversion (from Former Degree to Bachelor s Degree) These students will enrol in-person at the Students Secretariat during the period of 6 8 October from 9 am to 1 pm 6

12 STUDENT INFORMATION Registration of students of the Bachelor s Degrees in BA or ECO in English To do the Bachelor s Degree in BA or ECO in English students must enrol in group E. Any student enrolling in this group (either in the first, second or third year) will be able to join it as long as there are free places. Priority will be given to those students who were already in this group the previous year (Group E in the academic year ). To enrol in group E, faithful documents should be provided proving that certificates beyond B2 or First Certificate level have been obtained on later dates than (More information on equivalent certificates is available on The certificate should be submitted to the Vice-Dean s Office of International Relations (Main Building. 2 nd Floor) before being registered. Students not having the required certificates should sit an English test in July 7 th or September 21 st. Applications for the English test should be sent by to svicedec@ccee.ucm.es (Subject: Prueba de Idioma ) or on the telephone number: Request of adaptation to the Bachelor s Degrees in ECO and BA Students wishing to adapt to the Bachelor s Degree in Economics and the Bachelor s Degree in Business Administration must apply from 1 to 30 September in the Students Secretariat of the Faculty. Rules for Plans to be Phased-Out The Governing Board of the Complutense University, at a meeting holded on the 28 April 2011, has adopted the following resolution: The University will arrange six calls for exams for the courses in the process of being phased-out up to the deadline established at the callendar of extinction. Students may sit the exams provided that the six examination opportunities are not exhausted, according to current regulations. Students admitted in a Second Cycle Degree to be phased-out to continue studies from another university will be applied the regulations for the continuance at the University, with the restrictions expressed at the calendar of extinction. Students who want to make use of the Convocatoria de Gracia (seventh and last examination opportunity) should formalize the application in time so that the results could be recorded in the academic transcripts of the last academic year which appears in the calendar of extinction for the corresponding course. To have notice of the syllabus, teaching objectives and assessment method. Tutorials The times for tutorials of each lecturer are published at the Department Notice Board as well as at the website. Assessment: right to sit exams and to be assessed. The Vice-Dean s Office will arbitrate the required solutions in case any student has exams of two subjects simultaneously. (Procedures in case of overlapping exams are published in the website). Examination results: within a maximum period of 30 days after the last exam and 10 days before the following exam of the same course. Examination appeals: In the centre, within the dates set by each professor and published together with the grades. Students will have four working days after the publication of their grades to ask for the review. In case of disagreement with the result of the review, students may contest their grade, within a period of ten days, to the Department Board by submitting a written reasoning to the registry of the centre addressed to the Head of the Department who will communicate this claim to the appointed Committee. It is possible to lodge an ordinary appeal to the Chancellor against the Enactment of the Department Committee within a month. DUTIES Studying Attendance to lectures 8

14 STUDENT INFORMATION Observance of the rules of academic discipline Responsible participation Cooperation to meet the University goals Collaboration grants The UCM collaboration grants are economic aids for students in exchange of their collaboration in certain Centres or Services of the University. The main aim is to provide students with complementary training which may be helpful when it comes to get integrated in the labour sphere. Every call for collaboration grants establishes a training plan and every collaboration grant recipient is assigned a tutor in charge of his/her training. UCM collaboration grants are processed through the Department of Collaboration Grants UCM, which is under the governance of the Service of Grants, located at the Student Building. This Department is in charge of giving information relating to open calls for grants, future calls, requirements or any other aspect related to collaboration grants. Telephone: and Fax: utbeco@rect.ucm.es The Ministry of Education call the grants of collaboration in Universitary Departments. These grants are addressed to last-year students having a student record of at least 7 points over 10. These grants are compatible with the general grants and the mobility grants called by the Ministry. Application forms must be filled out before September 30 via telematic means at the following website: in the section of «Trámites y Servicios». Programme of National Mobility SICUE-SÉNECA More information: Students Vice-Dean s Office The Faculty is participating in the Programme SICUE (System of Exchange between Spanish University Centres), which enables students to complete an academic year in another Spanish university centre having the corresponding courses validated. Mobility agreements between Universities are signed during the first months of the academic year and, therefore, suggestions can be made during that period. The call of the SICUE programme for the academic year 2012/2013 is made in the month of January At the present time there are agreements with the following universities: Barcelona, Córdoba, Granada, Islas Baleares, La Laguna, Murcia, País Vasco, Pablo de Olavide (Sevilla), Politécnica de Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia, Valladolid and Vigo. Once students have been admited to the programme SICUE, they can apply for SÉNECA grants, which provide financial aid to facilitate the exchange. One of the requirements to obtain a SÉNECA grant is to have a grade point average equal to or higher than 6,50 in a scale 0-10 for Social Sciences Degrees on the academic record. 9

15 5.- STUDIES EUROPEAN HIGHER EDUCATION AREA The Sorbonne (1998) and Bologna (1999) Declarations initiated a process to promote the convergence between the different national systems of education and to develop the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) before In further meetings the Ministries of Education from the participating countries proposed the development and adoption of systems of degrees which could be easily compared enabling like this the academic and professional acknowledgement all across the EHEA. The key issues are: Establishment of a teaching system consisting of three cycles: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate. Implementation of a European Supplement to the Diploma: a document which will be annexed to each university official diploma providing unified and personal information for each university bachelor about his/her studies, grades, professional skills and the level of his/her degree in the national system of higher education. Adoption of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Mobility of university students and professors. Importance of skills for employability. Teaching-learning process: the creation of the EHEA implies an important change in the way of teaching as the lecturer s teaching was the focus until recently. However, from now on the student s learning will be the key issue. Methodology and quality renewal: new and more active ways of teaching have been implemented to achieve students learning. These new ways of teaching are highly diverse, as well as the nature of the different subjects and degrees and the teaching methods of each professor. Nevertheless, there is a certain common denominator which can orientate students and which could be summarized as follows: o New teaching methods: in addition to the traditional lectures, where students acquire the knowledges, there are also new ways of more participative classes. o Detailed planning of activities in advance: the activities to be carried out both inside and outside the classroom will be clearly established in the course programme in advance. o Development of skills: the planned activities aim to develop essential skills for integral training as well as for the incorporation to the labor market. o Continuous assessment: the assessment of the student s work both inside and outside the classroom is continuous. o Compulsory attendance: it is compulsory for students to attend classes in order to pass these courses. o Limited number of students: the number of students registered will be always limited so that a more participative model of teaching can be developed successfully. o New technologies: usually the use of the Virtual Campus tool becomes very useful and necessary to develop these subjects. 10

16 EHEA During the last five years, Complutense University has promoted different initiatives to favor the implementation of the EHEA. One of these initiatives has been to offer pilot or Bologna courses and complete groups, within the former degrees ( licenciaturas ), where these new ways of teaching-learning have been developed. These pilot courses and complete groups have made it possible to obtain experiences which have been assessed through surveys to lecturers and students. Moreover, through the monitoring programme ECTS, we have obtained data about the average of time devoted by students to the different tasks of the teaching-learning process which has been certainly very useful to elaborate the study plan for the new Bachelor s, Master s and Doctorate degrees. Within the framework of the EHEA and for the following academic year ( ), the Faculty of Economics and Business of Complutense University will offer: - FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD YEAR of the bachelor s degrees adapted to the EHEA: Years 1, 2 and 3 of the Bachelor s Degree in Business Administration (BBA), and Years 1, 2 and 3 of the Bachelor s Degree in Economics (BEc). English Option for Years 1, 2 and 3 of the BBA and for Years 1, 2 and 3 of the BEc: group E. At the present time we have two parallel programs since we are adapting our academic curriculum to the European Higher Education Area. The former degrees were called Licenciaturas and lasted five years, while the new degrees are called Bachelor s degrees and comprise four years. In each academic period, one year of the former degrees ( licenciaturas ) is eliminated while a new year of the Bachelor s Degrees is implemented; until the whole new system is established. 18 5.2.- BACHELOR S DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The Bachelor s Degree in Business Administration consists of 240 ECTS distributed in Core Courses (B), Compulsory Courses (C), Elective Courses (E) and the Bachelor s Thesis (table 1). 21 BACHELOR S DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ENGLISH OPTION The Faculty of Economics and Business of Complutense University offers the possibility of studying in English the Bachelor s Degree in Business Administration (BBA). For the following academic year ( ), we will offer a group in Years One, Two and Three of this degree where all courses will be taught in English. These groups are 1 E, 2 E and 3E of the BBA. Those students willing to enrol in these groups should prove their level of English with certificates. Those who do not have the required academic certificate should pass the level test. (See the instructions for the languages test in our website). 16
