1 America s Army Linux Server Setup Manual The purpose of this file is to explain, in easy to understand terms, how to install the Linux server version on your system. This manual consists of the following five topics: (1) Installing the File (2) Server Setup (3) PunkBuster Setup (4) Log Setup (5) Startup (6) Registration Anytime you see <enter>, press enter on your keyboard. Follow the screenshots below for examples of what you should see as you proceed through the installation process. In the examples that follow, I am installing AA v2.0. I am using a system running Red Hat Linux 7.3. Other versions of Linux may have different commands than what I am using that will get you the same result. If you find yourself in a position that you think a different command or editor would work better for you, then use what you re comfortable with. I am starting with the assumption that you have already downloaded the file to your system and have a few minutes to get it set up. (1) Installing the File. The first step to installing the recent version of the AA Linux software on your system is to decide where it s going to go on your system. During the initial installation phase, you will be asked to choose a directory. As an example, I ve placed mine in /home/toweringpines. To begin the installation process, type the following: sh./armyops200-lnx.run <enter>

2 The next screen you should see is the AA Setup Page. OK should be highlighted. Press <enter> to continue. Next is the PunkBuster Licensing Agreement. EXIT should be highlighted. Press <enter> to continue.

3 Next, is the America s Army Licensing Agreement. YES should be highlighted. You must select YES to proceed. Ensure YES is highlighted, then press <enter> to continue. Next is the README file. Use your arrow keys to select either YES or NO, then press <enter>. Next, you must choose the installation path for the game. In this example, /usr/local/games/armyops is used. I changed this to /home/toweringpines/armyops. Choose OK <enter>. Next, it will ask if you want to install symbolic links. <enter> Choose the directory you re putting armyops into. In my case, I m using: /home/toweringpines. Choose OK <enter> 3

4 Choose <enter> to do the base install. When prompted to Install Startup Menu Entries, choose NO <enter> You should now be watching the installer screen. It may take a few minutes depending on your system. The installation process should now be finished. Choose NO <enter> 4

5 (2) Server Setup. After installing all the files needed, your next step is to start getting things setup in the system.ini file so that you can run the game over a network or internet connection. The first step in this process is to create the system.ini file. You will need to navigate to the directory that you installed armyops too. In here, you will find Default.ini. Use your text editor of choice to create the system.ini file. My choice was to $pico Default.ini, make my changes, then save the file as server.ini. This is the part where I warn you that making changes to some of these lines will create huge problems. We are going to go over the basic settings that can safely be changed and settings that need to be changed to have your server listed on the in game browser. 5

6 First, you can change the name that your server displays by modifying ServerName=. Next, ShortName= is exactly what it says, a short name for your server. AdminName= is the name of the server administrator. Admin = is your address. Region= is your region, you can leave this at zero if you want. MOTDLine1-4= These lines add a message of the day to the center of the screen when a player joins your server. Here, you will also put in your Administrator Password in AdminPassword=. This gives you control of your server through the game. You will need this password if you log into your server as an administrator while in the game. Logging in as an administrator gives you the power to change maps, kick players that are not playing by your rules (Hey, it is your server.), and spectate any player in the server as well as many other advantages. It is important to set this up before you start hosting any games. The next line is GamePassword=. Very simply, this is to set up a closed server. People will need this password to log in to your server. If you only want your friends joining your server, set up the password and give it to them. 6

7 The next thing to edit is the maps. Choose the maps you want to be able to play and add them to the list exactly like it shows below. Don t forget to put the number of maps at the bottom, the number must equal the number of maps you have listed. The next screenshot is for tweaking. The file can be modified to include autobalance(bautobalancebetween Rounds=true), different team sizes(maxteamsize=8), more or less rounds of play(roundspermatch=7), and more. 7

8 Remove the ; before IP and insert your server s IP address on both of the following lines listed as IP=your server s IP address. (If you don t know the IP address of your server, you may have to call your ISP.) Now, control c (ctrl+c) and save the file as server.ini <enter>. (3) PunkBuster Setup Activating Punkbuster is easy. From your System folder in armyops, change directories to pb ($ cd pb). In this directory, use your favorite text editor to open pbsvgame.cfg. Inside, you will find one line, sv_punkbuster 0. Change the 0 to a 1 and close the editor saving your changes. Punk buster is now enabled. 8

9 (4) Log Setup Logs can be an incredibly useful tool in troubleshooting problems, seeing who s using your server, and finding out who s doing what and when. Setting up the server to start logging is even easier than setting up punkbuster. Make a directory in your System folder called logs (mkdir logs<enter>). Done. Now, when you start your server, you will see that it s creating a log file, and what it s being named. (5) Startup To start your server, type in this line at your shell prompt:./server-bin global <mapname> -nohomedir INI=server.ini<enter> You should see a screen like the following screenshot. Note that global sets your game up for the internet as opposed to lan which sets your game up for a lan. <mapname> is the name of the map you want loaded. In the screenshot below, SFhospital is the map of choice. 9

10 Now that you ve started your game, you want to play, right? Here s a tip, if you start this game on your system and close the terminal screen, your server shuts down. How do you stop this from happening? Easy. At the bash prompt ($), type in screen. Then, start your game. After it finishes loading, press <ctrl><a><d> to detach the screen. Then, the game will run in the background and you can close the terminal screen without any problems. To log back in to that screen, just type in screen r <enter> to resume the screen, you should see that the game is still running. (6) Server Registration Once your server is up and running, the final step is registration. If you want your server to be populated in the in-game server browser list (either Andromeda or GameSpy), you ll want to register it first. To register your server, log into by using your game UserName, then choose the Register Server link. Once you complete this form, that s it! You re done! Your server will be proudly displayed in the server list.
