Class Meeting Time and Location: 6 pm to 10:10 pm Thursday, Rm Catalog Description: Information systems types, components, technology, and development are studied within an organizational framework, with emphasis on problem solving. Emphasis will be placed on principles, vocabulary, and concepts; what a manager needs to know to make effective use of information technology. 10. Course Outcome Competencies: McLeod/Schell 10th 2007 Pearson Spring 10 Identify and describe the use of Information Systems in business today and be able to communicate in terms associated with IS. Explore and debate critical issues related to managing and administering the IS function. Demonstrate and ability to investigate the overall information needs of an organization and the role of information systems in providing them. Examine alternative ways to match information systems function to the structure and behavior of the organization. Identify and debate societal and ethical issues impacting IS managers. 14. Attendance Requirements: It is expected that students attend all regularly scheduled meeting dates. The class attendance is taken at 6:45 pm any student arriving after 6:45 pm is considered absent from the class. Please note that points are assigned for attending and participating in our class. For students arriving late or leaving early, only partial points are earned. There is no make-up for missed attendance points. I understand that situations arise that might prohibit you from making it to class, but understand the importance of meeting this obligation. We will follow the WBU policy and guidance regarding multiple missed class periods. Please note that missing more than one class period will result in at least a letter grade reduction.

4 MISM 5306 DR. FLORES WINTER Additional information as desired by the faculty member. General Information: This syllabus contains a general overview of the course only. Once you have read and understood everything contained in the syllabus, I will ask you to confirm with your signature. Your confirmation will also confirm that you understand and will adhere to the following statement: This class will adhere to zero tolerance for using someone else s work as your own. TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS: I will provide direction. POLICY ON INCOMPLETES: Wayland's policy on giving grades of Incomplete in a course is outlined in the University's catalog. As a supplement to that catalog, my policy is to assign a one-letter-grade reduction upon removal of the Incomplete. The only exceptions to this are in the case of either documented absence from your home area because of occupational requirements which makes Internet access impossible, or documented severe illness. Claims of not having the time to finish, or mismanagement of that time will not be considered a valid excuse. There are 11 weeks in the term (not counting any breaks), giving you sufficient time to complete all requirements by the assigned due dates. My advice is to work ahead whenever possible in order to minimize the effects of unanticipated delays. CLASSROOM ACTIVITY: Please make sure to participate in the classroom. Your knowledge and experience is valued. Please ensure you keep a positive and professional demeanor at all times. LEARNING TEAM ASSIGNMENTS: It is expected that you will resolve the majority of team-related issues on your own. If you have situations where a team member is failing to do the work, please make sure to engage me. Please note that I will use a Peer Review analysis as part of the grading process. RESEARCH PROJECT: Your Learning Team research project has two parts: (1) Formal presentation to the class (2) Written portion submitted to me You will select a company, for-profit or non-profit, and conduct a comprehensive study of its information systems. Here are the components to consider, but there are more: (a) Background of organization (b) Clear problem statement (c) How MIS fits into strategic policy (d) SWOT Analysis (e) Using IT as a competitive advantage (f) Security issues (g) Incorporate Project Management, Six Sigma, and Process Management (need charts, diagrams, etc.) (h) Conduct a Cost/Benefit Analysis, ROI, or other financial evaluation (i) Employee hiring, training, and development to meet IT challenges (j) Global implications (k) Recommendations (l) Conclusion (m) Extensive reference list minimum of 20 sources

FLORES WINTER The written report of your project will consist of a paper not less than 20 pages of TEXT (standard double-spaced with 1 inch margins all around) in length (Cover Pages, Tables of Content, figures, pictures, graphs, apendixes, and bibliographies will not be counted as text). At this point, let me remind you that if you use Microsoft Word to produce your paper, its default in Office 2003 is 1.25 inches, and you need to change it to one inch. Further, please make sure to remove the extra space that MS Word enters between paragraphs. Use only 12 point Times New Roman font on your papers. This will keep paper length consistent for everyone. Since a word processor is likely to be used in preparation of the paper, it is expected that there will be NO spelling errors. Accuracy is important. You will not receive a grade on grammar as such. However, clarity can affect understanding. If your work is difficult to understand, the content is questionable. Proper credit for references used will be included, and will be in accordance with the APA Style Manual. There will be at least twenty (20) outside references used (the text book does not count as one). Interviews with personnel in the organization analyzed will also not count as a reference. In other words, you will have to do some research to back up your conclusions. Since you are working on this assignment as a team, please make sure the work flows well. Please note that we cannot use a company where one of the team members is employed. ASSIGNMENTS: Select one case study from five (5) different chapters and submit your responses to the questions. You will submit this assignment as ONE document to the placeholder I create in Blackboard. The assignment is due in Week 10. IMPORTANT NOTE: Internet references WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE in this course. ALL references will come from Professional Journal articles and will be derived from the WBU Online Library. EXAMINATIONS: There will be a Mid-Term and a Final Examination. Each will cover the material listed on the schedule. The final is comprehensive. The final exam consists of two parts: Essay and M-C. Please note that they are comprehensive; thus, you are allowed at least 3 hours for each portions. The exams are available on Blackboard. STUDY HABITS: Careful and timely reading and study as well as completion of all written assignments by the expected dates is critical to your success in this course. Text readings will normally coincide with coverage of the material in lessons. This will facilitate your active participation in class discussions. Please make sure to stay abreast with the readings. You will perform much better on the exam if you have a clear idea of the topics. MISCELLANEOUS: You are encouraged to be "entrepreneurial" in your approach to the class, in your assignments, and in your class presentations and interactions. Your observations or experiences, and how they might relate to the subject at hand, have the potential to enhance all of the class sessions. Please share those of value so that you may be a resource to all participants including me! You are also encouraged to employ the systems perspective and wear the "manager's hat" in relating to the issues so that you will be able to think about them critically from multiple dimensions. A NOTE ON DROPPING THE COURSE: If you drop the course, please let me know with an message. Very often I do not receive drop notices in a timely manner, and sometimes not at all. Please help me to keep the class roll up to date.

My hobbies are exercising, reading motivational books, and traveling!
