What is Nuclear Knowledge Management? An integrated, systematic approach for identifying, acquiring, transforming, developing, disseminating, using, sharing and preserving knowledge relevant to achieving specific objectives. 5
Organizational Context Asset Classes: Physical Capital - Equipment/Hardware Technology Capital - IT/Process Knowledge Industry Knowledge Corporate and Executive Knowledge Nuclear Processes / Manager and Supervisor Knowledge Human Capital - People Front line / Craftsperson / Skilled Labor Knowledge A resource which was created by absorbing other resources. Has its own cost. Needs to be managed in an efficient and effective manner to help to reach organizational or national goals. 6
Scope of NKM Creating an awareness that nuclear, knowledge is a fundamental resource, Developing and using effective mechanisms, for capturing, preserving and transferring, explicit, implicit and tacit knowledge, Identifying core competencies, Managing the risk of knowledge loss, Creating mechanisms, for attracting and, developing future nuclear workers, Maintaining and developing R&D capabilities, Foster a knowledge management culture.
Main Objectives of NKM strategy Safety - Achieve safe operation and maintenance of all nuclear facilities by sharing of operational experience; Benefit - Achieve gains in economics and operational performance through effective management of the resource nuclear knowledge; Security and Non-proliferation- Achieve responsible use by properly identifying and protecting nuclear knowledge from improper use. Innovation - Facilitate innovation to achieve significant improvements in the safe, economical operation of all new nuclear projects; Sustainability - Maximize the flow of nuclear knowledge from one generation to the next
Knowledge Capture Background When attempting to capture and preserve knowledge it is important to consider the type of knowledge targeted Explicit Knowledge Documents Tacit Knowledge Customer Queries Patent s Manuals Easy to identify, prioritize & capture Difficult to identify, prioritize & capture
