1 San Bruno Park School District Bond Fund Modernizations and Site improvements
2 For many years the district recognized the need to modernize it s aging structures and develop modern learning spaces. In the early 1990 s, under the leadership of Doctor Theresa Daem and the existing Governing Board, the district began developing their Modernization plan by convening with Gordon Chong & Partners Architectural firm to perform preliminary Facility Assessments. In 1998, three events took place which actually kick-started the Modernization Process: 1. The Leroy Green Fund made matching Modernization funds available to the District from the state. Though the funds did not match the amount the District spent, it did amount to several million dollars that the state would contribute toward the modernization. 2. The Board and the voters approved our current 30 million Dollar Construction Bond. 3. Dr. Donna Elder, a woman who had a background of being involved in construction, became Superintendent to the District. Under her administration the actual construction process had begun.
3 The Plan It was decided that the construction of the schools would take place during the summer months. This would allow full use of the available building fund dollars to be used primarily for modernization and not be reduced by providing temporary classroom housing. The modernization was to be implemented in 5 stages: 1. Classroom makeovers and upgrades 2.Administration, Multi-purpose rooms and Libraries. 3. Roofing 4. Painting 5.Landscaping & paving By breaking up the scope of work in this fashion, the construction was able to be accomplished successfully in the allowable time frame of the summer break, over a period of several summers. We started with 3 schools in In 2000 we brought 3 more sites into play and completed Belle Air School in it s entirety. In 2003 we completed the Modernization of Portola Elementary School in its entirety.
4 What was accomplished? 1. Abatement of hazardous materials at each site. 2. The electrical power supply of each site was upgraded (New Transformers & switchgear were installed). 3. The interior finishes of the classrooms and administration buildings were entirely redone. 4. Classroom lighting was improved and new fire-alarm systems were installed. 5. Additional power supplies and computer ports were installed in all classrooms enabling the entire district to be networked. 6. Compliance with today's accessibility requirements was met and all sites received new accessible lift platforms for the stages. 7. Site infrastructures were up-graded on an as needed basis. 8. Each site received a new exterior paint job & new classroom furniture. 9. All Roofs were brought to new condition with 10 year warrantees. 10. Re-paving has taken place or will be completed during the coming summer months at the majority of the sites. 11. A complete new District wide phone system linking all classrooms was installed. 12. At Belle Air School only, the existing classroom buildings were demolished and 21 new classroom buildings and a new administration building were then built.

9 Belle Air Elementary School The old school had to go; it was dark, noisy, leaky and cold, so we decided to build a new school.

18 What did we Do? We modernized the Multipurpose room, existing Administration Building and the old Kindergarten Building, turning them into a Teachers work room, counselors offices and a library. The buildings were completely gutted to the framing, then, structurally, electrically and mechanically up-graded as well as building new roofs and having new finishes applied to the 3-existing buildings. We demolished the balance of the existing school and replaced it with 21 new classrooms and a new administration building, complete with a new staff lounge. Complete new underground electrical, communication, sewage, and storm systems were installed. Also, as a result of the events of 9-11, the national guard went on full alert, thus filling the parking lot in front of the school causing a parking shortage, so we built a new teachers parking lot.
19 Belle Air Elementary School Today We finished landscaping in late December 2001.
