1 Student Academic Achievement Committee (SAAC) Standardized Report Form INTRODUCTION Program/Discipline Title: Construction Technology General Construction Concentration Degree Time Period: Fall term through summer term Program goals, objectives, and/or mission: The Carpentry Certificate Program provides students with the technical skills and knowledge necessary to meet the requirements of the construction industry for a skilled workforce. Exit Competencies: Construction Technology, Construction Concentration. The certificate holder will be able to correctly interpret blueprint drawings and provide an accurate estimation of materials and cost for a specific project.. The student will demonstrate the safe and proper use of hand and power tools used in the construction trade.. Students will demonstrate the ability to safely layout and construct concrete foundations, layout and install floor, wall, ceiling and roof structural members in accordance with plans and specifications, the International Residential Building Code, and industry standards while working with a team of coworkers and a supervisor.. The students will demonstrate the ability to safely apply exterior wall and roof coverings, install windows, doors, insulation, drywall, and cabinetry in accordance with the International Residential Code and industry standards while working with a team of coworkers and a supervisor.. Demonstrate essential workplace skills of mathematics, communication, personal responsibility and team work. Core Competencies: Team Work, Communication, Life Skills, Numeracy

2 Results Introduction and discussion of assessment efforts: The Carpentry program began formal assessment activities in the fall of. The program evaluation has evolved taking advantage of new opportunities to measure student learning and success. The evaluation has resulted in many changes to the Construction Technology curriculum. In the past the Carpentry Program has reported assessment results for CNM s core competencies and the program s technical exit competencies. This report will evaluate assessment efforts for the Carpentry Program exit competencies. Assessment Plan (Who, what, when, and how assessment took place): Internal measures: In the 9 academic year the Construction technology Program moved from module completion rates to a performance based evaluation for each of the exit competencies. The results of the performance evaluations are documented using a performance grading rubrics and grades. The student performance data is collected and evaluated by student academic performance in the courses completed b students. External measures: The Carpentry Program uses building inspections, and Skills USA participation as external measures of student performance. The program must get building inspections for cottages built as part of the curriculum. These inspections give the program feedback from professional building inspectors on the quality of student performance building a cottage. All Construction Technology students must participate in Skills USA. The result of student placement compares CNM students with students from around the state and the nation. The Construction Technology Program has been tracking student performance for many years using data collected from WorkKeys assessment. CNM no longer offers WorkKeys testing.. Exit Competency Results: Exit competency is measured by grades in the CARP blue print reading course. Average grade points for Carp Blueprints and is 8% Exit Competency is measured by the number of reported accidents. There were no reported accidents. Exit Competency & is measured by building inspection. There were 6 building inspection on the cottages. From this we learned that students need to know the code on nail patterns. Exit Competency is measured by Skills USA. All carpentry students participated in Skills USA. The CNM students won st and rd in the state competition and th at the national competitions. Discussion of changes in support of student learning for PAST year based on your assessment results: Last year s assessment report found that the finish work performed by students could use some improvement. As a result, the assessment report stated that Next fall and spring terms students will spend an extra weeks working in the carpentry shop to improve on their carpentry finish skills. This recommendation was implemented in the fall spring and summer terms. Students need more training in layout and so the carpentry program is proposing to add new courses to the program. One course will teach students concrete form layout and construction and the other course will be in metal framing. CNM students who go to the National Sills USA competitions are competing against students who are attending and year carpentry programs. CNM s carpentry program is only terms. The Construction Technology Degree, Carpentry Concentration will have more lab classes giving students advance skills and more hands-on practice. Result: CCC approved new courses Metal Framing and Concrete Forming to be added to the degree program. In addition three credit hour theory course were combined into one course to give the instructor better control over the entire curriculum. There was a significant improvement the quality of finish work as demonstrated by contractor approval and the performance at Skills USA competitions.

3 Discussion of proposed changes in support of student learning for COMING year based upon your assessment results: The program will need to assess the performance of students in the new courses approved by the CCC committee and put into the catalog. Exit Competency & is measured by building inspection. There were 6 building inspection on the cottages. From this we learned that students need to know the code on nail patterns. The CARP theory class we concentrate on assuring that students understand and apply the building code to nailing patterns. Exit Competency is measured by Skills USA. All carpentry students participated in Skills USA. The CNM students won st and rd in the state competition and th at the national competitions. The completion showed that students need more training in framing and applying blueprint specifications to building layout. The new courses should improve these skills. DATA Assessment efforts have change since the carpentry program began collecting data in. The current cycle of assessment will continue to use student academic performance, Skills USA and Building inspections.
