1 Proposal For Upgrades for the AG450 Lab Server Agricultural Education & Studies through the College of Agriculture in response to a call for proposals by the College of Agriculture Computer Advisory Committee Gaylan Scofield, Ph.D., Proposer - ggs@iastate.edu 006 Curtiss Hall Robert Martin - Professor & Head Agricultural Education & Studies Department Dean, College of Agricutlure
2 Project Overview and Expected Benefit This proposal from the Department of Agricultural Education & Studies is a request to replace the AG450 Student Server and 206 Lab Laser Printer. The current server is a P166 with 128M RAM and 4G of storage running Novell server software. There is no hardware upgrade path available for this server as most of the components are five years plus in age. The dependability of this server has decreased this past year as more heavier demands are being placed on it. Additional demands placed on the 206 Lab printer have caused it to become more unreliable due to a heavier printing load. A. Description and intended purpose for all project expenditures and identify expenditures from Central Ag Pool Funds. This project proposes to replace the AG450 Student Server and a lab printer. This server currently provides network printing and student file storage for two computer labs (23 workstations + 2 printers) as well as student project storage for some of our AGEDS service classes. B. Quantify how the proposed facilities will be made available to students. 1. Identify the hours this facility will be open for general student use. The 206 Lab is open 8 hours/day 5 days/week. No regularly scheduled courses are taught in this lab but it is used heavily by students taking AGEDS service courses. The 220 Lab is available 24 hours/day 7 days/week via key access for AGEDS graduate students and students with projects. Computers in the 220 Lab (6 P166's & 5 P233's) are scheduled to be replaced from current departmental funds as they become available. 2. Identify the number of students that will be able to work simultaneously during these hours. 206 Lab = 12 workstations, 220 Lab = 11 workstations 3. Identify the number of student population(s) that should benefit from the proposal. Estimate the number of students to be served. This 206 laboratory currently serves approximately 400 undergraduate students in the Ag Studies and Ag Education curriculums, other students taking AGEDS service courses, and general walk-in students. Agricultural Studies Undergrad Major 285 students Agricultural Education Undergrad Major 150 students Service courses (AGEDS 282X 311, 315, 450, 514, 593H) 150 students/sem
3 C. Special new technologies needed. None D. Identify university facilities needed for the proposed project. The AG450 Student Server is housed in 6C Curtiss along with other Departmental servers. The printer will be housed in the 206 Lab. Support and Maintenance 1. Support for recurring costs will not be supported; identify the anticipated costs and explain how these costs will be met this year and in future years. The AGEDS Department employs a hardware/software support person to perform the required routine maintenance and repair. The Department installs devices to prevent theft. Additional support and maintenance costs for this facility will be paid through other resources made available to AGEDS by the College and University.
