1 National Indicators Florida State and Regional Data The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action has established a dashboard of indicators to measure the success in progress toward the Institute of Medicine recommendations. These are graphic representations of measurable goals that the campaign has selected to evaluate our efforts. The Florida Center for Nursing (FCN) is able to provide these benchmark indicators for the state and, in some cases, eight geographic regions. Results are based on nurse supply data analysis for the registered nurse population completed on a biennial basis in concert with nurse license renewal cycles. As of December 2011 the Center estimated that there were 140,620 employed RNs in the State. Analysis of this cohort allows us to present Florida s current indicators as baseline results. Updated indicators will be published allowing for clear determination of success in moving toward the desired goals. FLORIDA BASELINE INDICATORS (as of December 2011) INDICATOR 1: Percentage of employed nurses with a baccalaureate in nursing or higher degree. 7 Florida Center for Nursing Geographic Regions INDICATOR 3: Removing barriers to practice and care: Advanced Practice Nurses ability to practice to the full extent of their education and training. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing scores each state based on conditions for practice. Baseline data from 2010 indicates that Florida ranked in the category of few barriers for nurses to practice to the full extent of their education and training.

As part of the effort to remove barriers to practice, Mary Lou Brunell, Executive Director of the Florida Center for Nursing, provided the following testimony to the Florida Legislature: - February 11 th, 2013 Panel member at the Florida TaxWatch ARNP Scope of Practice Summit in Tallahassee - February 18 th, 2013 Provide testimony at the House Committee on the PPACA in Tallahassee INDICATOR 4: Inter-professional collaboration: Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and disseminate collaborative improvement efforts. INDICATOR 5: Leadership: Healthcare decision makers should ensure leadership positions are available to and filled by nurses. The Florida Center for Nursing is collaborating with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Foundation on the project: Promoting Nurse Leaders in Florida to Advance Nursing and Health Policy.
