3 Open the Internet 1. Click on the Internet Explorer symbol near the Start button If you cannot see the Internet Explorer symbol near the Start button 1. Click the Start button The start button is at the bottom left side of your computer screen 2. 4 Website Addresses Every website has a unique address, for example the web address for the BBC is The BBC website address is made up of a few parts: www means it is on the World Wide Web bbc is the registered name of the organisation co.uk this shows that it is a company in the UK. Other website addresses have different endings, for example:.com It is an International company, e.g. It is a UK voluntary group, e.g. It is a UK government group, e.g. It is a UK university, e.g. 4

5 Finding a website on the Internet If you know the web address, you can type it into the address bar. The address bar is the white box at the top of the webpage Here is an example using the BBC website 1. Move your cursor over the address bar and Click. The address will turn blue. 2. Type over the blue address. 3. Press Enter on the keyboard. The webpage for the BBC will open 5

6 Exercise 2 Looking at Internet websites 1. Find the website for Speakability. The address is You must type the FULL address with no spaces and no spelling mistakes. 2. Move up and down the webpage using the scroll wheel on the mouse 6

7 You can also move up and down the webpage using the scroll bar Click on the Up and Down arrows on the scroll bar. This is on the right side of your computer screen Click the top arrow to move up the webpage Move up the web page Click the bottom arrow to move down the webpage Move down the web page 7

8 Looking at Internet websites Hyperlinks 1. Move the cursor around the webpage using the mouse 2. The cursor changes to a hand when you move it over some words, pictures or videos This is called a hyperlink. It shows you that there is a link to another webpage. Exercise 3 - Hyperlinks 1. Find a hyperlink on the Speakability webpage and click once You have now opened a new webpage If the new webpage takes time to load, the cursor will change to an hourglass until the webpage opens 2. To go back to the main page click the back button This button is on the left at the top of the computer screen 8

9 Internet toolbar buttons The toolbar is across the top of the Internet page and has some buttons to help you move around the Internet It is hard to explain these buttons without showing you on the Internet. So open the Internet, look at a few web pages and try out the buttons below. The back and forward buttons are useful when you are looking at lots of webpages. Back opens the last webpage that you looked at Forward opens the next webpage Stop stops a web page from opening Refresh reloads the page you are looking at. This is useful if the webpage stops working. Home page takes you to the page that you have set as your Home Page. Favourites this is a list of all the webpages you want to visit again. See Booklet 7 to show you how to do this. Print prints a paper copy of the web page you are looking at 9
