2 CHARACTER DESIGN AND CREATION J/504/0275 LEVEL 3 AIM OF THE UNIT By completing this unit, learners will understand how characters are created and developed for use in animation, graphic novels and comics. They will be able to create a new character with a profile, and develop it through drawings into a modelled 3D outcome. 2

A character profile is created for each idea, exploring possible features and characteristics M1 Learners use visual language to demonstrate a good understanding of how a character s features and emotions are conveyed 4 Be able to develop a character idea into a series of finished drawings 5 Be able to create a 3D character P4 Learners develop one idea further and present a final design and final profile for a new character. They produce a competent series of finished drawings that convey the character s basic features P5 Learners use 3D modelling techniques to produce a competent 3D model or maquette of their new character M2 Learners develop a range of the character s features, expressions and emotions in good quality drawings. The character is believable in a range of different situations M3 Learners produce a good quality 3D model or maquette that is a detailed and realistic representation of their new character D1 Learners place their character within an appropriate environment with at least one other character. The characters are placed within a simple narrative 3
4 TEACHING CONTENT The unit content describes what has to be taught to ensure that learners are able to access the highest grade. Anything which follows an i.e. details what must be taught as part of that area of content. Anything which follows an e.g. is illustrative, it should be noted that where e.g. is used, learners must know and be able to apply relevant examples to their work though these do not need to be the same ones specified in the unit content. Understand characters used in comics or graphic novels and animation or console games Consider: Historical development (e.g. Mickey/Minnie Mouse, Betty Boop, Simpsons) Character s place in narrative; style and origins; characteristics and profile For example: Significant comic/graphic novel publishers (e.g. DC Comics, Manga Entertainment, Marvel Comics, 2000AD, DC Thompson, Fleetway Press) Significant/famous animators/games designers (e.g. Nick Park, Tim Burton, Disney, Pixar, EA Games, William Kentridge). Be able to develop a character idea into a series of finished drawings For example: the character s back story, unique character traits and/or abilities, relationship with other characters etc. finished character drawings/illustrations to illustrate physical characteristics, body, head, clothing etc. Be able to create a 3D character This could be a digital 3D model built on a wire frame and rendered OR could be a sculpted scale model or maquette. Understand how characters are created and developed For example, development of: elements of a character (e.g. head, face, facial features, hair, body parts, clothing and costumes, props) emotions and expressions character concepts environmental influence on character design character development characters in different situations Explore media and techniques used by writers/pencilers, letterers/inkers/colourists (e.g. Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Will Eisner, Osamu Tezuka, Kev F. Sutherland etc.) Be able to develop ideas for a new character s features and profile For example: initial character sketches, ideas for characteristics, features, character back story, genre, style etc. 4
5 Character design and creation Level 3 Unit 33 DELIVERY GUIDANCE This unit is centre-assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, learners must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the pass grading criteria. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. Portfolios put forward for moderation must be available for the OCR Visiting Moderator to access freely during the moderation visit, along with witness statements and any other necessary supporting documentation. Learners use 3D modelling techniques to produce a 3D model or maquette of their new character P5/M3. This could be a digital 3D model built on a wire frame and rendered OR could be a sculpted scale model or maquette. This unit could be done as an independent unit but for most learners it will be seen as the first part of an integrated delivery with Unit 34. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by learners is authentic. In order to achieve this unit, learners must produce evidence that meets all the pass grading criteria. There are no other additional requirements for this unit. Learners should start assessment criteria P1 by exploring characters used in comic/graphic novels and animation/ consol games, looking at the work of significant/famous animators. They will need to be selective, perhaps first looking at a broad general range and then narrowing down their choice as an interest is identified. Evidence could be in the form of annotated studies, notes etc. Exploration in P2/M1 should lead to a study of the development of characters and their characteristics for assessment criteria and using the knowledge gained from this, the learner can in P3 start to create their own unique character. Ideas development will be through annotated sketches, models, photos etc. which should provide evidence of why decisions have been made, reasons for choices etc. For P4/M2/D1 learners develop one idea for a character using finished drawings to create a character profile and final design that conveys the characters features and emotions, making them believable in different situations and narratives. Records of the production in the form of annotated studies should be kept as evidence of the production process used, reasons for choices made etc. Records in the form of storyboards, annotated studies/sketches, photos, notes etc. could be presented in a personal journal, sketchbook etc. 5
