You are responsible for regularly checking the online resources, which is accessed through the portal at and then on My Vista Courses. Course announcements will be sent on Vista or appear as Vista announcements. Course Description and Goals The first goal of this course is to gain a familiarity with the origins of Judaism, its practices and beliefs, and major moments in the history of the tradition. We will explore the textual basis of Judaism, including important parts of the Hebrew Bible, known in Christianity as the Old Testament. We will also read passages from the formative and authoritative texts of rabbinic Judaism such as the Talmud and traditional Jewish biblical interpretation or Midrash. Central Jewish beliefs and religious practices (including prayer, holidays, and the Fall 10 page 1 of 12

2 life cycle) will be surveyed. Attention will also be given to historical and theological issues facing Judaism in modernity, including Jewish responses to the Enlightenment, the nature of anti-semitism, the impact of the Holocaust on Jewish views of God s justice (theodicy), and the significance of Zionism and the state of Israel to Judaism as a whole. The second goal of the course is to explore Judaism and the minority experience in the United States. Minority status includes aspects of race and ethnicity, native language, gender and sexuality, class and economic status, religion, as well as societal prejudice and discrimination. The experiences of Jews are particularly interesting to this discussion for a variety of reasons. Judaism has not only a religious but also an ethnic or even racial dimension; however, the history of Judaism reveals how problematic the concept of race is. Like other minorities, Jews have often given up their native languages upon emigrating to the US and sought to blend in with their neighbors and their traditions. In the face of this assimilation, other Jews have sought to strengthen or redefine their religious practices and beliefs. Jewish economic success and ethnic status as white grant Jews much in common with majority American culture, but the prominence of the notion of America as a Christian nation, together with historically ingrained prejudices and the existence of hate groups, solidifies the minority status of Jews. There is a tradition of solidarity with other minorities and the disenfranchised, but solidarity with Israel and appreciation of the Jewish experience in America have also resulted in increasing nationalism and affinity with majority American culture. In the process of exploring the basics of Judaism and the minority status of Jews in America, this course enables you to gain a feeling of empathy for the practitioners of this religion to imagine what it might be like to be a Jew. You will gain an appreciation for the diversity of Jewish groups and approaches to Judaism. On a practical level, you will also practice skills in the "close-reading" of texts and the creation of an argument or thesis statement. This course counts as a General Education course in the Humanities in the area of great thinkers and ideas (area C-3). It also counts as a United States Diversity (USD) course. General Education Course Requirements: Because this is a General Education course in the Humanities (area C), you will be expected to attend 4 cultural events during the semester. Part of your class participation requirement will be met when you hand in a single document detailing each event you attended in a description of one sentence or more. One of these "events" may be one of the recommended films listed on this syllabus under the appropriate dates. Other events might include television documentaries related to Judaism, serious musical performances, plays, or lectures, attended this semester. Except for the films or documentaries, they need not relate to Judaism or religion. The observation of a Jewish service may count for GE as well as for extra credit (an extra credit submission requires a 1-page response paper). Fall 10 page 2 of 12

Some would describe the synagogue as similar to Reform in its relaxed atmosphere and English service with Hebrew songs and prayers. Friday night services (Kabbalat Shabbat) are well attended and begin at 7:30pm, but the first Friday of the month is usually earlier Fall 10 page 5 of 12

6 (check to confirm). Saturday morning Shabbat services are usually the main service, and include a ceremonial chanting of the Torah portion of the week from the Torah scroll housed in the ark; these services begin at 10am and last 2 hours. The Rabbi notes that it is more polite to arrive late than to leave early and that it is not polite to take notes during the service. Dress is informal. Men are not expected to put on a kippah or skullcap as they enter the synagogue, although these are available at the entrance and are optional for men or women. Seating is mixed (men and women are not separated). The Chico Havurah: Meetings are held at the Congregational Church, 1190 East First Ave. (the corner of Downing & East 1st Ave.) on the first and third Fridays of every month at 7pm. The Chico Havurah is a small Reconstructionist Congregation (an offshoot of the Conservative movement) formed in 2003 to give Jews in Chico an alternative to the traditional synagogue experience. The Havurah is a Jewish community that seeks to honor Jewish history and culture by focusing on the kavannah (spirit) of the traditions, rather than rigid religious observation. Everyone, regardless of religious identity, knowledge, or background, is welcome to participate fully in our services and community. Seating is mixed.
