3 The world garden Tekirdağ (Evliya Çelebi) Thracian King Kersepleptes The most interesting piece exhibited in the museum is Thracian King Kersepleptes who dates back to the 4th century B.C. In 1998, in the unearthed grave during the excavations of Harekat Tepe tumulus, the royal crown,priesthood crown and his clothes were found and they have been exhibited in the museum along with the King sculpture clothed in its original form as in his own time The ruins of the fortress belonging to the king in Heraion Teichos ( Karaveli) antique city, an important harbour city of Thracian Odris kingdom, are also unearthed in these excavations 1

5 Establishment date of the city dates back to about 6000 B.C. And later, alternately,the city was under the sovereignty of Persians,Romans and Byzantines. In 1357, the city and its surrounding conquered by the Ottomans were under the Turks forever. The oldest name of Tekirdağ was Bisanthe founded as Samos colony and later became Rhaedestus originated from Rome after 334 B.C. The other name used during this period was Rodosto.After having been captured by Ottomans from Byzantium Christian ruler,rodosto was called as Rodosçuk.But later, Tekfurdağı, and after the proclamation of the Republic,it was Tekirdağ. It is 130 kilometers away from İstanbul. The Sea of Marmara in the South,Marmara Ereğlisi in the West,Çorlu in the North,Muratlı in the North- west and Malkara in the West surround the city. On the sea of Marmara,it generally has Mediterranean climate.but different from Mediterranean coasts,it snows on the coasts during the winter.from time to time,north winds cause the temperature decrease.the inlands of the province has a typical of continental climate,hot in the summer and cold in the winter,land and sea transportation are available for the central province 3

6 Atatürk and Tekirdağ Atatürk has a special place for Tekirdağ,a stage of many historical events. He has been to Tekirdağ five times; On July 13, 1913 to Şarköy while Thrace is freed from Bulgarian invasion during the Second Balkan War, On February 2, 1915 to Tekirdağ to found the 19th division On August 23, 1928 to Tekirdağ to start the alphabet reform by the Ertuğrul yacht from the sea, On June 3, 1936 to Muratlı town to see the construction of the new immigrant village, On August 1937 to Tekirdağ to watch the maneuver held in Thrace The year ; 23 August, 1928 The building where Atatürk the Great Leader introduced the new Turkish alphabet as the Head Teacher 4

8 Archeology and Etnography Museum Tekirdağ museum came into service in 1967 in the building where Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports is and continued its service in a small exhibitioan hall up to 1977.Today s museum building was built as the Governor s residence.in 1977, first building of the Republic period, masonry construction assigned by the provincial private administration to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism was changed into museum by being restored in its original form.findings and artifacts from the prehistorical ages untill today are exhibited in this museum. 6

9 Stone Works Hall All findings along with the Stone Works containing the artifacts,votive steles,steles,sculptures,statuettes unearthed in Perinthos Marmara Ereğilisi, Heraion Teichos (Karaevlialtı) Byzanthe (Barbaros) Apri (Kermeyan), Tekirdağ and its environments are exhibited in a glass chamber arranged in the same dimensions with Naip Tumulus Chamber. 7

10 Archeological Small Artifacts Hall Earthenware Mother Goddess vessel,daily use vessels,krater and amphoras, metallic statuettes,vessels,spearheads, arrow heads,fibulas,glass and stone jewelries,perfume bottles,ornaments and coins dating back from the Prehistoric ages to Byzantion period are exhibited in this hall. 8

11 Open Exhibitıon In the five terraced garden of the museum, some findings dating back from the Prehistoric ages to Byzantion and Ottoman periods such as architectural pieces, sarcophaguses,grave stones, inscriptions,columns,statues,milestones and reliefs unearthed in Tekirdağ and its environment are exhibited. 9

12 Tekirdağ Sanjak Tekirdağ Room Etnography Hall Glazed earthenwares,firearms,edged weapons,silver jewelleries from Ottoman and recent periods and also bath sets, hand needleworks, man and woman costumes from Tekirdağ region are exhibited in this hall.the exhibition of the old Tekirdağ bedroom and Karacakılavuz wovens is in this hall. 10

14 Rakoczi Museum The museum,where the Hungarian prince came in 1720 and stayed until 1735, his death date, is an Ottoman house from 7th century.this home, after being restored in appropriate to its architectural characteristics by the Hungarian Government in 1932, was changed into a museum. The entrance inscription of the museum says when and why the museum was restored.in the museum with three floors,rakoczy s and his family members paintings,their kitchen wares, war implements used in their times, a meeting hall,the copies of wooden carvings made by Rakoczy himself and examples of letters written by Kelemen Mikes are exhibited. İbrahim Müteferrika Monument Considering the printing house, İbrahim Müteferrika is the first name to come to mind. He was born in Kolozsvar in Hungary in He was at the service of Hungarian Prince Ferenc II Rakoczi invited to Turkey and acted as a translator and interpreter to him. 12

15 Freedom and Home Poet Namık Kemal Namık Kemal House This house was made to be built for the memory of Namık Kemal born on 21 December,1840 at Ortacami Quarter Namık Kemal Street, number 7 by the support of Namık Kemal Association,Tekirdağ Special Provincial Administration, Tekirdağ Education Foundation,Schools,Tekirdağ Municipality, Foundations,Municipalities, NGO s and people and came into service on 21 December, Namık Kemal Monument 13

17 Rüstem Paşa Mosque The mosque built by Sinan the architect in 1553 and named after the GrandVizier Rüstem Paşa,a son in law of Suleyman the Magnificient, remains standing with its all great pomp. This work,with its mosque,bath,covered bazaar,madrassah,a moslem thelogical school,is a külliye,an Ottoman social complex.the square shaped mosque was built in a large courtyard and its wooden roof is covered with two domes on 22 columns Rüstem Paşa Socıal Complex Today, the bath,mosque,covered bazaar,madrassah and library of the mosque remains standing.in the past, it is said to have a caravanserai and imaret,a public kitchen for poors.but today,the mosque and covered bazaar are in a very good condition. 15

19 Ertuğrul Frigate Monument Ertuğrul quarter of Tekirdağ took its name from Ertuğrul Frigate sent to Japan for a return visit in 1890 and foundered off Kushimoto due to a huge storm,in which the Commander was Ali Bey from Malkara Dedecik village of Tekirdağ and our 587 mariners lost their lives. Martyrs Monument It is was built to the honour of soldiers who died martyr during the landing of Greeks in the morning of 20 July, Freedom Monument 1908 Hüseyin Pehlivan The world has never seen a wrestler like him. 21 On İstanbul-Tekirdağ highway,10 kilometers away from Tekirdağ,Heraion Teichos is an ancient Thracian settlement. Excavation Works have been in progress since Surface researches and excavation works show that it is settled continuously from the second thousand year untill the end of 13th century A.D. Stone hachets,handmade earthenwares and the likes of them unearthed in Heraion Teichos site are findings of iron and bronze ages. The excavation works carried on in the acropolis of the settlement in tumulus shape enables them to be brought to light. 19

22 Perinthos Perinthos (Marmara Ereğilisi) situated on the southern coast of Turkish Thrace is said to have been Samian colony,founded in 600 B.C. But a civililisation dating back to 4300 B.C. is unearthed by the archeological excavation carried on in TOPTEPE MOUND 5 kilometers away from Marmara Ereğilisi in the West 20

25 Kumbağ is a nice town on Marmara coast of Ganos mountains.before Balkan War 1913,it was a Greek fishing village of 600 homes named as Kombos but later in an elapsing time untill 1923,it was settled by emmigrants from Greece,Bulgaria and Romania in 1935.In 1993 it was entitled to be a municipality. 23

26 Çorlu Çorlu is situated on a plane over the plateau level.this settlement having all kinds of characteristics needed by the first age man is considered to be started It is no doubt that agriculture and settling started via immigrations of Thracians.Thus,the unearthed settlements dating back to Prehistorical age in its close neighbourhood justifies this view. 27 Çorlu Kalesi Some ruins from the fortress situated in the Northwest of Çorlu are available today.the definite building date of the fortress is not known but some ruins are supposed to date back to the VI century Bizantine period. The West and East of the fortress is surrounded by dry river beds.it is made of brick and ruble stone walls on ashlar foundations. 25

29 Süleymaniye Mosque - Çorlu It is one of the most important historical works of Çorlu.It was made to be built by Sultan Süleyman the magnificient in 1521.The main place has one dome and congregation place is covered with three cupolas. The mosque having a medrese with 22 rooms when it was built for the first time is called as Camii Kebir meaning the Great Mosque. 27

34 Hayrabolu Hasan Bey Mosque Hayrabolu is one the oldest towns in Thrace.Today s name of the town,the old one of which was Chariopolis, a breezy town,is asserted to have originated either from Hanripol,the fortress commander dying during the conquest or from the expression The conquest has abundant blessing.along the historical ages, the town was governed by Turks such as Huns,Avars, Patzinaks,Bulgarians, Macedonians and Roman and Bizantine Empires. Güzelce Hasanbey Mosque It is also called as Ulu Mosque (Great Mosque) and Güzelce Hasan Bey Mosque.It was made to be built by Güzelce hasan Bey,a son in law of Beyazıt II in 1499 Hacılar Bridge It is a bridge with six arches which was made to be built by Ataullah Bey,the district governor, on Tekirdağ road and Hayrabolu brook. It is the tomb of Ahmed-i Sarban, a poet, a saint and a commander of the camel brigades of Suleyman the Magnificient.It was made to be built by the imperial order of Kanuni in 1527 and is Sarban-i Ahmet Tomb restored in time. 32

35 Malkara The ancient name of the town founded by Thracians in 5th century is Megalihoro. Apri founded to romanize the area in the 1st century A.D. is within the boundaries of Kermeyan village of town. It is the center of agriculture and animal breeding and has brown coal as underground resources. Turhanoğlu Gazi Ömer bey Mosque was made to be built by Gazi Ömer bey,a son of Turhan Bey, the conquerer of Morea. His sepulchre is next to the mosque. Turhanoğlu Gazi Ömer Bey Mosque Baş Fountain So far as it is understood from the scripture,ıt was made to be built by Ahmet Paşa in 953 A.H. ( 1546 ). This fountain at Camiatik quarter Başçeşme street can be made use of. 33

36 Muratlı It is a town of Tekirdağ and 23 kilometers far away from the center.it is surrounded by Çorlu in the East,Tekirdağ in the South and Lüleburgaz town of Kırklareli in the North. Sultan Murat I who liked the place where he set up,on the way back from a campaign, his imperial tent in the South of the ancient highway bridge, requested this town to be named as Murateli.And the second important case is that Yavuz Sultan Selim,on the way to Edirne,died in Ulaş locality,yeşilsırt village of Muratlı town. Atatürk Evi In 1935,Kazım Paşa was charged with housing the people immigrating from Romania and Bulgaria.He who was responsible for its building and planning. On 3 June,1936 Atatürk paid a visit Muratlı for inspecting the immigrants house and visited this house on Gazi street on the side of the railway. In 1870 the railway was constructed during the Eurpean- İstanbul railway construction. Edirne- İstanbul railway passing thorugh Çerkezköy-Çorlu and Muratlı stations is 21 kilometers within the boundaries of Muratlı town.it has a station mastership in town. 34

The most important indicators of this are that the highways and roads pass through the boundaries of Tekirdağ province.the Via Egnatia connecting the western and eastern part of the Roman Empire in the 2nd century B.C. runs through the Balkans from Durres (Dyrrachium) in Albania, through Macedonia and Northern Greece all the way to Istanbul (Byzantium) in Turkey and is connected to the Silk Road. It covered a total distance of about 1,120 km and about six metres wide. It runs through Kermeyan village in Malkara and Marmaraereğlisi town in the provincial boundaries of Tekirdağ. 36

Kastro,an old name but now today s name Çamlıkoy, is a small bay where Bahçeköy brook flows into the Black Sea and a coastline of Saray lined with a sandy beach 25 km long. Çamlıkoy accommodating the beauties of Yıldız Mountains and Black Sea is one of the exceptional tourism attraction centers where blue and green meet. As a result of this, the area has a huge collection of floras.in addition to these, the viniculture and wine production villages ( Çınarlı, Hoşköy, Gaziköy, Tepeköy), villages exhibiting and presenting agricultural products (Güzelköy, İğde Bağları),olive oil producing villages (Eriklice, Nursallı), and villages having aromatic herb texture (Uçmakdere- Hoşköy) are highly interesting in ecotourism.
