3 1. Maros Tower (Dapne) Coordinates: B E Excellent historical interest presents the last castle vestige, located in the village of Daphne, the extant tall tower, known as the "Tower of Maro." Maro from which the tower took its name, was the wife of Murad II and daughter of the Serbian prince George Brakovits. From the side of her mother was Kantakouzini, granddaughter of Matthew Katakousinos and niece of Helen, wife of David Komnenos last emperor of Trebizond. 3

4 Planned INTERVENTION For the restoration and maintenance of the Maros Tower, all the relevant studies are concluded. Among them are both the restoration of the building and the landscaping. These studies are already approved by the local Archeological Council and the relevant Committee. Executives of the Municipality, supported by external experts, have already started the preparation of the project submission to a relevant call of NSRF to secure the necessary financial resources 4

5 2. OLD LAGADI Coordinates: B E Its story was first appeared around Its foundation was a join of families that inhabit below the area of old village Lagadi. Turkish oppression was the cause that forced residents to flee to higher points in order to avoid direct contact with them and continue farming, which was their main occupation. Responsible for the administration of the village was a Turkish Bey and a Greek kotsampasi. Planned INTERVENTION One of the priorities of the Municipality of Vissaltia is the organizations and promotion of the area round the Holy Church of Genethlia tis Theotokou. Technical Directorate of the Municipality is preparing the relevant study and due to its small scale size, it is possible to be implemented by own means of the Municipality. 5

6 3. SPRINGS OF THERMA Coordinates: B E The springs of Themra are known all over Greece for the famous mineral water located just five kilometers from Nigrita Serres. The water of the hot springs is suitable for gastrointestinal disease and chronic rheumatic diseases. Apart from the springs for the baths there is a source of drinking water that belongs to the category of alkaline acid-springs. The water of this spring, after being mixed with carbonic acid, is bottled in the bottling plant of the region and traded. Planned INTERVENTION For the promotion and improvement of Springs of Therma a master plan has been delivered by a specialized company in cooperation with the Technical Directorate of Vissaltias Municipality. The update of this master plan is in progress and as soon as it will be finished, financial resources will be searched. 6

7 4. TERPNI: ARCHEOLOGICAL AREA Coordinates: B E Terpni is a town of Serres, with 2,189 inhabitants. Archaeological excavations 4 km outside Terpni, at "Palaiokastro" showed that the place flourished from the Classical to the Hellenistic era. Situated there were the the largest gold mines in Macedonia after Pangeo. Placed in this area was the ancient kingdom of Visaltia, which was one of the most rich and powerful in Macedonia. It was home of King Visaltis and the king of Thrace, Rhesus. Planned INTERVENTION An architectural study for the creation of an archeological memory park at St. Mandilio Terpnis has been concluded recently. This study includes a strategic plan for the protection and promotion of the whole area round the area of archeological interest in Terpni. 7

8 5. ORESKIA Oreskia is a settlement of Daphne village, 1km away from its centre. Probably is an ancient city, whose existence is attested by a number of coins found in the area. Among the coins found there, it was one with the inscription of Oreskeios (perhaps it was the king of Oreskia), which unfortunately fell into the hands of smugglers. The Oreskia during the Ottoman period was named Kizeli by the Turkish Kiz (girl) and Eli (fifty) because, according to tradition, fifty girls was killed there by the Turks, thinking that among them, was the lady Maro who lived in the tower of Daphne., 1.,. 9 INTERVENTION It is an area of extraordinary beauty, but until now only separate local interventions have been realized. Since 2010 it belongs to the jurisdiction of Municipality of Vissaltia Municipality of 9

10 Vissaltia, and in the forthcoming months a tender for the preparation of a strategic plan for the protection and promotion of the area will be announced. 6. KOUPATSIANOS RIVER Coordinates: 40 57'16"N 23 23'55"E The ancient Vergi was an important city in ancient times. Vergi, along with Argilos, Kerdylion and Ossa, was one of the most important cities of ancient Visaltia. The city obtained a dominant role, as it facilitated the transfer of goods from the Aegean island and Thassos to the Thracian hinterland and the Balkans. Vergi began to lose its importance after the establishment of Amphipolis (437 BC), but its role was important in Hellenistic and Roman times as well The area around the river Koupatsianos is characterized by outstanding natural beauty, combining an exceptional landscape with a pleasant micro environment. 10

11 INTERVENTION There is a plan to create infrastructure to meet stay needs for 300 people. Those projects include construction of walking paths and bike paths, placing kiosks, benches, playground, toilets etc. 11
